20.01.2022 Lezione Mauro Giuliani Opus 139 No.4 Grade 4 List A No.4... Italian guitarist and composer Mauro Giuliani was one of the most prominent guitar virtuosi of his time. He was well connected in the highest circles, particularly with Vienna’s musical elite. Giuliani was acquainted with pianist and composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel, with whom he performed duo concerts, and with compatriot Gioachino Rossini, whose music inspired him to write his six ‘Rossiniane’. Giuliani is also said to have played cello in the 1813 premiere performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s seventh symphony in Vienna. 12.01.2022 Nesta rua (Traditional) arranged by Kurt Bruckner and played by Greg Cook Guitar Impressions This old Brazilian love son ‘Nesta rua’ (This Street) has been transcribed many times. The virtuosic piano arrangement by Heitor Villa-Lobos and Isaias Savio’s guitar arrangement ‘Nesta rua: Theme and variations’ are perhaps two of the most prominent examples. This work needs to be played with much expression, yearning tone and judicious rubato. With the melody stretching across three... strings and ranging from first through to seventh position, the core technical focus needs to be on position shifts, consistent tone quality and legato.
