25.01.2022 Not good news. An outbreak of bird flu in south-west Victoria is growing. Chickens at a free range egg farm near Lethbridge tested positive last week. A contain...ment zone was set up and thousands of chickens were sadly culled. Now chickens at a second free range egg farm in the region are sick with it too. Avian influenza rarely impacts humans but a large outbreak has the potential to shut down the region's egg production. And that would mean colossal losses for farmers at an already tough time. The State Government has ordered that all free range chickens in the region be kept inside for at least the next 30 days to try to control the virus spread. 08.01.2022 AVIAN INFLUENZA UPDATE: Golden Plains poultry owners will be required to continue to house their birds for an additional 21 days in response to the avian influ...enza outbreaks. The extension to the housing order begins on 6 September and legally requires all poultry owners - even those with just two or three chickens or birds - to keep their birds housed until 26 September. Victoria's Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Graeme Cooke said the new extension to the order applies to both large- and small-scale operators within the control area. Backyard flock owners must also take all practical measures to reduce contact between wild birds and their domestic poultry. The initial housing order began on 7 August and was originally proposed to be in place for 30 days but was always subject to a review. "Extending the housing order is a necessary measure to help limit the spread to other farms and minimise the impact on Victoria's poultry industry. Agriculture Vic will continue to monitor the situation. These controls prohibit the movement of poultry, birds, related equipment and products within and out of the designated Control Area of Golden Plains Shire unless a permit has been granted by Agriculture Victoria. A permit is required for each and every movement. "This means all poultry and equipment, including hens, chickens, eggs and manure cannot be sold (including online) or given away at farm-gate, on property or taken to any markets. Haddon Hatchlings is NOT affected by avian influenza, however we are affected by the restrictions as we are on the border of Golden plains Shire and Ballarat Shire Council. We understand if our customers would like to review their position on our waiting list due to Agriculture Victoria’s restrictions on us being able to sell fertile eggs and/ or chicks. We are able to continue to incubate our fertile eggs and will sell chicks/ pullets and trios once able to. We expect this to be the end of September/ early October at this stage. If your circumstances mean that October would be too late for you to wait for your order of fertile eggs from us that you have ordered, please pm me . We totally understand. 06.01.2022 If you live in the Golden Plains Shire and have poultry, house your birds until further notice to protect them from avian influenza. Where possible, move birds ...into a suitable building, like a shed or outbuilding adapted to house them, or a new temporary structure. Put netting over openings to stop wild birds getting in and remove any hazardous substances.
