25.01.2022 Your everyday foods, habits, and even your thoughts, impact the level of inflammation in your body. Inflammation matters because it's linked to disease. It's a cascade of injury at a cellular level. Inflammation starts when your immune cells recognise a molecule that's linked to damage, stress or infection.... It takes this as a warning and passes it on to other cells. The list of foods and practices on the right hand side of the image all cause cell stress or damage, or lead to infection. Chronic or ongoing inflammation is when your inflammation does not resolve and can persist at a low level for years. Over time, this kind of inflammation causes the immune system to weaken, and disease to set in like Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, depression, obesity, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and much more. Living a more anti-inflammatory life can help stave off disease and improve the quality of health, mood and life. And it's NEVER too late to START. TIP If the list looks daunting, try changing one thing each fortnight. Over a year you would have made 26 changes that are going to make you feel better and enjoy your life more! 24.01.2022 Do you STRUGGLE to eat healthy food? Do you consider food you know isn't healthy like sugary cakes and biscuits a TREAT? Yet is your health SUFFERING? As a Nutritional Therapist and Mindset Transformation Coach, I help you CONNECT THE DOTS between what you put in your mouth and how you feel, your energy levels and health problems. I help you turn your MINDSET around from seeing healthy food as deprivation to a sign of SELF RESPECT AND LOVE. What was once a treat is no longer ...desirable. What's your MOTIVATION for sticking to this? Like all my clients say, they FEEL better physically and emotionally. Their symptoms disappear, their energy increases, their sleep improves and their anxiety and moodiness goes. Sometimes they have a SETBACK, which only CONFIRMS how awful unhealthy foods make them feel. So they KEEP GOING and going. 23.01.2022 I get numerous calls from people seeking advice on what supplement can help heal them. They usually have a list of symptoms they want resolved. We all want that one thing that will take away our pain and make us healthy and able to live fully again that magic pill, or special test, or diet or exercise program, or habit change. But it doesn't usually exist. ... What exists is this: A way forward that leads you, at your pace, from the jungle of healing choices out there to a plan you can follow that creates takes you towards better health. And this way is usually holistic, involving a multi-pronged approach. For example, my plans for my clients might include... The right diet for where you are now. This might evolve as you move forward and transition to a different (and delicious) way of eatig A prioritised supplement protocol - based on testing and/or my extensive questionnaires - to reach your goals. This might include healing your gut (your command and control centre), balancing your hormones, or replenishing your cells. Sometimes all of these things are needed and we work on your priorities, peeling away the layers of poor health like an onion, until we get to your core of balance and vitality Removing redundant beliefs or mental/emotional blockages that might be getting in your way. As hard as it can be to grasp, science shows that our cells respond to our thoughts that can have a hug impact on our health, either positively or negatively Addressing any lifestyle contributors like stress, a lack of appropriate movement and poor sleep Want to learn more? 23.01.2022 What's EDS? It's a group of connective tissue disorders that can be inherited, and are varied in how they affect the body and their genetic causes. A common form is hypermobility or hEDS. Many who've inherited the gene wouldn't know. But when it's switched on, consequences include chronic pain, inflammation, dislocations and more.... I want to talk about its association with gut disorders. Studies show... 1/3 of patients in a gastroenterology clinic in the UK had hEDS Their disorders were in the stomach and oesophagus e.g. discomfort after eating, reflux, and bowel problems (cramps, diarrhoea, constipation) In a Mayo clinic study, 1/3 patients with EDS had abnormal movement patterns in the stomach or colon, and/or reflux Other studies showed people with hEDS had gut disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), rectal evacuatory dysfunction, constipation and postprandial distress syndrome The association between EDS and gut disorders could be caused by abnormalities of the connective tissue in the gut's walls People with hEDS are thus particularly susceptible to gut permeability. The consequence of this is sensitivities, allergies and autoimmunity Movement of the gut in pushing its contents along can be either increased, or reduced, from one segment to another hEDS is associated with coeliac disease (CD). One study checked hEDS patients for CD and found 5/31, or 16%, had CD (vs the usual 1%). Another checked CD patients for hEDS, and the rate was 4/13, or 30% What does this mean? It does NOT mean that gut healing is unachievable There's evidence that dietary interventions help In my experience, people with hEDS can be more sensitive to supplements, so gut-healing protocols might need to be done slower In general, the severity of genetic impact can be switched on and off by diet and environment EDS sufferers will benefit from a practitioner who understands their unique requirements To find out more, book a call https://squ.re/2yXUoSs

21.01.2022 A lack of stomach acid is what often causes reflux and GERD. Here's how it works... Food isn't broken down properly... It doesn't reach the right pH or acidity This doesn't trigger its release into the small intestine It sits there too long, putrefying and fermenting This gas and food needs to escape, so it comes up your oesophagus This is what we call heartburn What causes low stomach acid? Eating too many refined and sugary foods, drinking too much alcohol and coffee, stress, and to some degree, ageing. Should you go out and buy HCl tablets, or drink lemon water or vinegar before meals to raise it naturally? Not necessarily. You might need to do some gut healing first or risk a bad flare. This is particularly the case if you've been taking antacids or PPIs to lower your stomach acid. It is possible to heal your stomach, gently raise stomach acid levels, and digest your food properly again. If you'd like to know more, I offer a free first consult. You can book a Discovery Call here https://squ.re/2yXUoSs

20.01.2022 Sometimes people try to improve the state of their gut flora or microbiome, without considering upstream problems. This is great. But without dealing with any digestive issues further north, your gut flora will suffer and you could be wasting your time and money. Is your stomach acid adequate to break down proteins and prevent the stomach infection HPylori as well as downstream parasitic or viral infections?... Do you have enough pancreatic enzymes to further break down food and make the nutrients absorbable for your body? Or are over-sized food particles damaging your gut lining, feeding infections and causing food sensitivities? Is your gallbladder producing enough bile and is the bile flowing properly so that you're breaking down the fats critical for your cells and brain? Are you eating foods that are inflammatory and could be contributing to intestinal permeability or leaky gut, creating immune issues? How is your liver coping? Is it stressed from your diet filled with too many starchy foods like sugar and white products like flour, rice and potato? Is your carb intake high and contributing to gut infections or overgrowths? Is your fibre intake high enough to be feeding good bacteria? Do you have any parasitic, bacterial, yeast infections that need to be dealt with, including SIBO? You get the idea... DIGESTION IS A NORTH TO SOUTH PROCESS Without fixing upstream issues, your microbiome will most likely remain imbalanced and contribute to health and immunity issues. To learn more about how I can help bring order to your healing, I offer a free Discovery Call. You can book here https://squ.re/2yXUoSs

19.01.2022 B vitamins are critical for many functions, including the health of your cells, hormones, metabolism (energy) and brain. Shortages can result in a wide range of symptoms and serious health issues. I know this from personal experience. A shortage of vitamin B12 led me to have terrible nerve pain and poor sleep for years.... If you're fatigued, can't focus, experience weakness, have depression or anxiety, or other problems like foggy thinking and memory loss, you could have a shortage of B vitamins. I chose to highlight Vitamins B9 (folate) and B12 because of how critical they are, and how serious a shortage of them can be. This is particularly the case when we become aware of how a genetic predisposition like methylation issues can exacerbate your uptake of these. Want to learn more about how nutrition can help you? 16.01.2022 Here’s a story about a male client. He had a rare gum disease that was so bad - through no hygiene fault of his own - he was told he would lose all of his teeth. When he came to see me he’d lost 4 and he had to see his dentist every 3 months for a painful process of digging out the infection from pockets in his gums. In functional nutrition, the mouth is not just the window to the gut as it’s where chewing and other key digestive processes begin, but it mimics the state of ...your gut health. In other words, the cells and microbes that make up the gastrointestinal tract also exist in the mouth. A healthy gut is a healthy mouth with good dental health, and vice versa. This means that if you have cavities and other mouth infections, you most likely have gut imbalances such as intestinal permeability, inflammation, bacterial overgrowths and undergrowths, compromised gut immunity, food sensitivities, digestive and fat digestion problems, yeast or fungal imbalances and more. My client did a stool test to assess the state of his gut, and sure enough he had some imbalances, including a bad bacterial overgrowth that related to oral health. Through a natural dietary and supplemental protocol that killed off the bad bacteria, promoted the growth of his good bacteria, healed his gut lining and supported better gut immunity, his infection almost disappeared. His dentist said she’d never seen anything like it. My client still has to take care of his mouth and gut health, including by continuing to eat well, but he’s lost no more teeth and doesn’t need to see the dentist more than every 6- 12 months, just like the rest of us. During his last visit, rather than having many pockets of gum infection rated at 6-8 like before, he had one spot rated 2, which he then got rid of Contact me for more about your gut-mouth health gutsybynutrition.com.au/contact

15.01.2022 Do you have food allergies or sensitivities? Or do you have any of these symptom? Dark circle or bags under your eyes, sinus congestion or post-nasal drip; bloating, puffiness, fluid retention, IBS; frequent headaches, migraines or joint pain; brain fog and fatigue; eczema or skin rashes; asthma; or poor immunity? If so, you could have a food sensitivity.... There are three kinds of food antibody reactions commonly tested: Immunoglobulin E (IgE): an allergic reaction that you can’t miss Immunoglobulin M (IgM): found mainly in the blood and lymph fluid and produced immediately after an exposure Immunoglobulin G (IgG): found in all body fluids and representing a delayed response What's the problem here? And why test? It's called oral tolerance, the immune system’s way of tolerating acceptable foods while also dealing appropriately with bacteria or other harmful substances. When you lose it, your immune system becomes too sensitive, no longer responding to foods in a normal way. This happens when you have low gut immunity due to poor diet and lifestyle, long-term stress, drugs and antibiotics, poor upper digestive function and environmental toxins like mould or chemicals. Sometimes a client needs this kind of testing, as you can become sensitive to all manner of normally healthy foods like broccoli or oregano or steak You can do food elimination too, taking foods out of your diet before reintroducing them and checking any reactions. This takes time and determination, but it also makes it real and motivating Contact me for more information gutsybynutrition.com.au/contact

14.01.2022 Coeliac disease, wheat allergy and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity are different gluten related disorders, with similar symptoms but different disease pathways. They are all very real. Coeliac disease is a T-cell mediated autoimmune reaction (part of the adaptive rather than innate immune system you're born with) triggered by eating gluten proteins found in wheat and other gluten-containing grains. The autoimmune inflammatory cascade occurs only in the small bowel, where it ...leads to small intestine disease and malabsorption. To have Coeliac disease you must have inherited a gene. A wheat allergy is a different type of immune reaction, also to proteins contained in gluten-containing grains. It involves a full allergic reaction and immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies, which create an inflammatory response to several allergenic gluten proteins. The third, and less studied but nonetheless scientifically validated response to gluten, is non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) where people suffer a wide range of intestinal and non-intestinal symptoms shortly after eating gluten. While with NCGS there is an absence of coeliac-specific antibodies and villous atrophy (the villi are tiny hair-like appendages that line the small intestine, increasing the surface area to support maximum nutrient absorption) or any allergy related process like with wheat allergy, up to 50% of sufferers have IgG or antigliadin in their blood, a blood marker for Coeliac disease. So far, no blood or other criteria exists to confirm a diagnosis. Eliminating all gluten for 2-3 weeks before reintroducing it can help identify a gluten problem. All three conditions can be improved using nutrition. I'm a Certified Gluten Practitioner, a qualification I obtained studying with Dr Tom O'Bryan? 10.01.2022 Binders are insoluble particles that pass through the gut unabsorbed. Their purpose is to bind toxins like heavy metals, endotoxins and mycotoxins, and carry them out, as part of a healing process. Different binders work on different toxins. Their impact on gut flora differs:... 1. Bentonite Clay's (montmorillonite) sponge-like quality makes it a good anti-diarrheal and detoxer. But it draws good and bad bacteria out. If your flora is unhealthy, it can be beneficial. But not so if you’re trying to build up good bacteria. It's effective for mycotoxins, not heavy metals. 2. Zeolite (clinopticile) may promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. In trials it tightened the intestinal wall, prevented leaking and had an anti-inflammatory effect. The beneficial bacteria families Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium were not affected by zeolite. It's useful for some heavy metals and mycotoxins. 3. Charcoal (activated). I couldn’t find evidence of adverse impacts on gut hbacteria. It can be anti-inflammatory and protect the microbiome from antibiotics, but must be taken away from medication or it can absorb it. It modulates the immune system and is useful for some mycotoxins. 4. Saccharomyces Boulardii is also a probiotic with many uses. It's generally safe and benefits the gut microbiome. In people who are severely immune-compromised it can cause fungal infections (fungemia). It can carry out some mycotoxins. 5. Chlorella is a blue-green algae witha prebiotic function, stimulating the growth of good bacteria and supporting the digestive system. It can cause reactions in some people as it contains iodine. It can bind some heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, herbicides and some mycotoxins. In general, it’s not advisable to be on some binders long term because they can deplete the body of minerals or alter gut flora. This depends on the priority at the time. They should be taken 30-60 mins before, and 2 hours after, eating.

07.01.2022 Drinking any amount of alcohol, even occasionally, can have a negative impact on your gut. When it comes to alcohol abuse, like bingeing, this can disrupt the equilibrium of your gut flora and entire digestive system, potentially contributing to disease. An unhealthy gut is bad because it’s linked to reduced immunity and autoimmunity; cancer; heart, liver, thyroid and blood sugar disease; gut problems; joint pain and more.... Some key effects of alcohol include... Impacting the types, number and balance of flora in your gut, possibly causing over- and under-growths of bacteria, which can lead to disease The guts of people who drink alcohol regularly have different looking guts to those who drink little to none It causes leaky gut (intestinal permeability) where the normally tight junctions in your gut lining loosen and let undesirables like bacteria, viruses and parasites into your blood stream and across your entire system, leading to ongoing low-grade inflammation in the liver and elsewhere Even one isolated occasion of drinking can damage your gut wall and lead to the poor breakdown and malabsorption of essential vitamins and minerals your body can't make itself Alcohol abuse changes the composition of your gut flora, which can impact liver health and metabolism (cells and energy), and in turn your general health If you have any of the following health challenges, drink with caution... Low immunity or autoimmunity Chronic disease including blood sugar Brain disease like dementia, Alzheimer’s Digestive disorders like constipation, IBS, SIBO, gut infections Stomach problems such as acid reflux, ulcers, HPylori Liver problems Skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, acne Flush easily when drinking Hormone problems Food or other allergies and sensitivities To learn more about how to protect your gut from alcohol, see my latest blog. If you drink, do so with awareness, in moderation and avoid bingeing. https://gutsybynutrition.com.au//2020/9/15/alcohol-and-you

05.01.2022 Most of us know that we have a microbiota (microorganisms that live in particular site) in our gut or gastrointestinal tract. These microorganisms consist of bacteria, viruses, archaea and fungi. But now know that we also have a microbiota in our...... - Skin - Conjunctiva (eyes) - Urethra and bladder - Vagina - Placenta - Uterus - Oral cavity - Lung - Biliary tract Also, gut microbes or bacteria have been found in the brain. For a while now we've known that inflammation in the gut means inflammation in the brain, because the blood-brain barrier is permeable and can allow inflammatory agents in. But the cells in your vagus nerve, which connects your gut and organs to your brain, activated your glial cells through messages about inflammation. All of this can affect brain health and mood, and lead to disease Why does it matter that we have many microbiota in our body? Because our microbiota play a beneficial role in shaping our immune system and in maintaining homoeostasis, or balance, in our body. Often these organisms are symbionts that live with us and are mutually beneficial. But when they get out of balance, they can cause infections or overgrowths, that can have health consequences for us. So eat and drink to nurture all your microbiota, and think carefully about the air you breathe, what you put on your skin, and how you treat your body For more interesting news, see my blogs here gutsybynutrition.com.au/blogs

05.01.2022 There’s something that happens with accountability. No matter who you are, how much you know, or even if it's your area of expertise. Because someone is on your side, in your corner and cheering you on who is NOT you.... They care, even though it may be their job to do so, because they love to help others they love to help you and you feel this. And even though you’re skeptical about your ability to change as you've tried many times before, they suggest things. Those things filter through, and you find yourself attempting them, just a bit at first. It feels good You feel good about the structure and framework they’ve created around you. It doesn't stifle you, because you're in control really. Soon you find your feel good about YOURSELF. And one day, your goals seem achievable. That's the value of having the right professional support. Invaluable I offer a free first call here https://squ.re/2Ltg9w3

04.01.2022 Constipation is something that so many people suffer from, you might think it's normal. While it may be common, it isn't healthy. Humans need to go to the toilet 1-3 times per day, or they risk reabsorbing toxins, not to mention suffering from bloating, pain, and feeling poorly and moody. What causes constipation?... Eating a diet lacking in fibre, drinking insufficient water, having imbalanced gut microbes, being magnesium or fat deficient, and not moving enough can all contribute. Taking laxatives, even so-called natural ones, to make you regular isn't healthy either. When used regularly they can cause dysfunction of bowel motility like intestinal paralysis, cathartic colon, lazy or laxative gut, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, and other problems. Nutritional therapy can help you get rid of your constipation naturally and permanently by supporting you to change your diet and lifestyle, and restore balance to your gut Contact me for a FREE consult gutsybynutrition.com.au/contact
