23.01.2022 At Guumali we work alongside Aboriginal organisations to strengthen and establish good governance. We understand the complexity that many boards face having to balance both Aboriginal and western systems. We know first hand the impact of disjointed service delivery, insufficient resourcing and remoteness. At Guumali we don't just deliver governance training we work to empower directors to find their voice, to lead with courage, to question and to develop future leaders. Mos...t importantly we specialise in working with boards to realign with their purpose, finding a clear pathway forward towards real and measurable change. #selfdetermination #boundlesspossible #indigenousrights #empoweringcommunity #sustainable #communityled

21.01.2022 We have come to then end of the week. The wet season has well and truly begun to roll in across the Top End and as we prepare for a day of workshops I think of my Country back home. Sometimes we can't be on Country, we may have other callings or life commitments that pull us away and often will get that feeling of being pulled back. Today is one of those days. Thanks to my Aunty Rhonda for sharing this beautful picture of the Narran Lakes back home full of water and bird life. If you are away from your Country share/tag us in a picture that represents your country and what it means to you. Would love to see some pictures of this beautiful place today #gamilaroi #country #aboriginalland #home #strength

19.01.2022 We are excited to be providing a voice for Aboriginal-led economic development in the north at this years Developing the North Conference 2020. At Guumali we are advocating for a new approach to business in the North, one that links business success with community success. On Tuesday our Founder Sorrell will be presenting on how Guumali is working to create genuine partnerships between the corporate sector and First Nation communities through a Shared Value approach, a strategy that seeks to solve social issues profitably. If you are heading to the Conference make sure to come say hi! @Yagbani Aboriginal Corporation

18.01.2022 The first dancing grass harvest in 200 years! Last Wednesday the Guardian published this inspiring story. It fills our hearts with pride seeing our cultural practices reinvigorated and ideas and talk put into action. Thank you Bruce and team for having the courage to lead the way. http://ow.ly/G9ov50zIHD2

18.01.2022 The community of Wadeye holds a very special place in our hearts at Guumali. A huge congratulations to the students and their families who graduated from year 12 last week, the first group in 13 years! 18.01.2022 Yaama everyone! I have been given the incredible opportunity to host IndigenousX Twitter account this week! If you happen to be on Twitter come over and join me for the next 7 days. 16.01.2022 JUST ANNOUNCED : NT Indigenous Economic Stimulus Package Minister Ken Wyatt has announced in partnership with the NT Land Councils the release of $100 million from the Aboriginal Benefits Account to provide immediate support for Aboriginal businesses and jobs in the NT. We will be advocating that this funding also goes towards strengthening business and governance capacity and access to culturally appropriate business planning and development support in order to get to "shovel ready" stage. 16.01.2022 We are looking forward to getting our hands on a copy of this. At Guumali we believe in an Australia where every community has a seat at the table. Congratulations Thomas Mayor on this huge achievement.

16.01.2022 Did you know that on this day, May 1, 1946, 800 stockmen walked off their jobs on the pastoral stations of the Pilbara vowing to not return until they were fairly treated? The Pilbara Stockmen’s Strike became one of the longest industrial disputes in Australia’s history and was a landmark push for equality by Indigenous Australians. Following the pastoral strike, strikers formed a community which sought economic and social independence from the pastoralists. In 1955 Pindan... Pty Ltd was established, a company in which all the shareholders were Aboriginal people. At Guumali we are committed to celebrating the achievements of our people and honouring their courage and contribution to Australia's economy. Today we recognise the Aboriginal men and women who were at the heart of Australia's pastoral industry success. 15.01.2022 Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations are the backbone of our communities and the driving force for change. At Guumali we are walking with organisations to support the successful transition of government and NGO run programs to community control. We are challenging the way things are done by putting community-led solutions and self- determination at the heart of planning, development and delivery. Over the last few months Guumali has been working alongside the Apont Agmp to deliver governance development and planning workshops with Bagot Community Aboriginal Corporation as part of plans to transition services to community control. A huge thank you to the Board for welcoming us to Bagot community, your passion and determination inspires us. #strategicplanning #servicedesign #governancesupport #humanrightsbasedapproach

14.01.2022 We must challenge and overcome the biases that exist regarding the role of women in caring for country, economic development and business. At Guumali we are passionate about advocating for the inclusion of First Nations women and young girls as part of building strong and sustainable communities. A great article about the Mimal Women's Rangers group who are leading the way in conservation and challenging stereotypes. A lot of cultural and environmental information is held specifically by women. By having a predominantly male ranger program, which was the case in the past, there were parts of Country not being cared for. https://www.australianethical.com.au//indigenous-female-r/

12.01.2022 Congratulations on a huge year Apont Agmp. We are super proud to have been part of the great work you do for our communities across the NT. Looking forward to working together in 2021. #resilence #SelfDetermination #leadership

12.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be let this week be a week where non-Indigenous Australia reflects, a week where workplaces see everyday, not just this week as an opportunity to embrace, respect and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Culture. Let it be a time that you listen, a time that you identify opportunities to work directly with First Nations Peoples to find solutions. It has been a challenging last few weeks for Black Australians, many of us waking up... to defend our culture, history and rights on a daily basis. For some this will not be a week to celebrate, it may be a week we find some healing in coming together, a week we are able to reconnect and draw strength from. Let us not ignore the context in which this years NAIDOC week falls, an international Black Lives Matter movement. Let us remember the origins of NAIDOC week one which stems from a movement of Aboriginal activism in the 1900's whose actions sought are still to be realised today. If your workplace is holding an event this week please be aware, be mindful and be compassionate. This week is an opportunity for you and your workplace to be allies for a future we can all be proud of. Take the Lead.

11.01.2022 Happy New Year everyone! Last year tested many of us personally and professionally. To all our family, friends and customers who supported Guumali in 2020 we could not have made it without you. 2021 is looking bright, this is our year to shine and we look forward to sharing our journey with you. Until then let's start the year off by honouring and celebrating the achievements of our mob! We would like to congratulate Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr AM recipient of the NT Senior Australian of the Year 2021. We thank you for your leadership. Because of you we can

10.01.2022 Indigenous Business Australia still has some spots available for their upcoming Wellbeing in Business Workshops. This year has definitely tested a lot of business owners and this is a great opportunity to reflect, learn and grow. Many Indigenous businesses set out to solve a social issue, at Guumali we recognise that in order for us to do the work we do, the well-being of our team and leaders must come first. Take care all.

08.01.2022 Check out the opinion piece our Founder Sorrell Ashby was asked to prepare for the Guardian this week as part of hosting IdigenousX. 07.01.2022 A message from our Founder, Sorrell Ashby Today we stop as a nation to remember and pay our respects. I remember my great grandfather George Elliott who spent his 21st birthday on the Gallipoli peninsula. But today is also a day to embrace truth-telling because at Guumali we believe that it's the only we can come together as an inclusive society.... As an Aboriginal person, there is somewhat a discomfort we are made to feel to bring up the injustices that Indigenous servicemen and women faced when they returned from war. On the other hand, there are also those who were denied re-entry into Australia due to the White Australia Policy. A few years back my dad took me to an old cemetery near Walgett out in the scrub. Among the graves were a number that had an old service wreath placed on them. These were the graves of Aboriginal people who had served in the World Wars but were denied the right to be buried alongside others who served because they were Aboriginal. No headstones, no names. As well as my great grandfather today I also think of those graves with no names, no flowers. I think of how those abandoned overseas had felt never being able to return to their country. I thank researchers like Dr David Kerwin who are working to tell these stories and those who have fought hard to ensure the Indigenous contribution is remembered and acknowledged because for some they have been forgotten. This is just another part of our history we must come to terms with, not run from in order for us to come together as a country. Sorrell Ashby, Founder Guumali http://www.nationalunitygovernment.org//50-aboriginal-trac

07.01.2022 Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Malcom X Did you know that only 36% of Indigenous Year 5 students in very remote areas are at or above national minimum reading standards, compared to 96% for non-Indigenous students in major cities, according to the 2018 National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)? This is known as the literacy gap. What can you do? The Indigenous Literacy Foundation works... with over 400 communities across Australia to close the literacy gap. The Foundation not only provides access to free culturally appropriate books, it also runs programs to inspire communities to tell and publish their own stories. Join us tomorrow in celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day. You can also check out the ILF website to see the great programs that individuals, workplaces and schools can get involved in. 05.01.2022 Founder of Guumali, Sorrell Ashby "Leaving the security of a full-time job to build my own revolution was not an easy thing to do. In fact the hardest part of the whole process was believing in myself. I had come to question my own value, and my health and wellbeing had suffered as a result of a burnout and a decade of unhealthy workplace experiences. I knew there had to be a better way to not just live and work but a better way of ensuring that our people were given a seat at the table when it came to deciding this country's future. Our old people have given us the gift of today, don't be afraid to believe in yourself and the change you can make."

05.01.2022 We are excited to be back out on country working with young people in Wadeye this week. With the support of Northern Territory PHN Guumali has partnered with the amazing team at Thamarrurr Youth Indigenous Corporation to co-design resources to minimise the harm caused to youth by alcohol and other drugs. Our design team spent yesterday learning about co-design and how it can be used to solve problems. Today we have been busy collecting information that will inform our design jams next year. Cant wait to see what these guys design!

05.01.2022 Yaama, we would like to welcome all our new followers who have joined the Guumali community over the last few days! We know our vision is big and that it's going to take a whole community to achieve. We are so heartened by the messages of support we have received and the demonstration of pride and stories shared over the last few days! We look forward to walking with you on our journey. The artwork is by the talented Rachael Sarra Creative we hope it brightens up your Wednesday!

04.01.2022 Warning: this post contains images of deceased persons. On this day in May 1868, the first international Australian cricket team an all Aboriginal team arrived in England. Formed by a pastoralist's son from western Victoria, in south-eastern Australia, the team toured England in 1868. It is both a triumphant and tragic story comprising of Aboriginal Australian, Colonial Australian and British nations - all woven together by cricket. On this 24 May, 2013 Adam Goodes called o...ut a girl for a racial slur made against Sydney's 47-point Indigenous Round win over Collingwood. In the final three years of his playing career he became a lightning rod for a heated public debate and widespread media commentary that divided the nation. He publicly called out racism, was named Australian of the Year, was accused of staging for free kicks, and performed an on-field war dance celebration. Over the last 200 years the sports field has been a place where First Nations Peoples are celebrated and ridiculed the next. The notion of "we want you for your talent but just don't speak up about the injustices your people experience or the racism your facing" continues to play out today. So it's Sunday, let's take a moment to remember the contribution of our sportsmen and sportswomen who have and continue to bridge the divide through sport. Being a professional sportsperson should not come at the cost of your identity and voice. There's a lot of work to do! Shout out to my Dad George Ashby, who was drafted from Walgett to play for the Gundagai Tigers with a group of mates. The first Grandfinal Gundagai ever won too. https://nit.com.au/walkabout-wickets-the-doco-and-the-desi/ https://thefinalquarterfilm.com.au/

02.01.2022 The Australian bush food industry is booming, but recent research suggests that Indigenous representation in the supply chain from growers to farm managers and exporters is less than 1 per cent.* While there is a need for a much bigger conversation about Indigenous participation in the Industry we are excited to see Maningrida Wild Foods feature on tonight's episode of Tastes of the Territory with Jimmy Shu. 02.01.2022 On this day 20 May 1982 Meriam men, Eddie Koiki Mabo, Reverend David Passi, Celuia Mapo Salee, Sam Passi and James Rice, brought an action against the State of Queensland and the Commonwealth of Australia, in the High Court, claiming 'native title' to the Murray Islands. The Queensland State Parliament tried to block the action by passing the Torres Strait Islands Coastal Islands Act, which tried to extinguish any rights that Torres Strait Islanders had to land after the cl...aim of sovereignty in 1879. The Meriam men challenged this in the High Court where it was found in conflict with the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 and therefor untrue. This is known as Mabo and others vs Queensland (No1). It was not until 3 June 1992 that Mabo No. 2 was decided overturning the rule of terra nullius (land belonging to no-one) and recognising that native title existed for not just Meriam people but all Indigenous people in Australia prior to the establishment of the British Colony of New South Wales in 1788. Today we remember and celebrate these men and their families for their courage, leadership and contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights in this country. 01.01.2022 We cannot build a prosperous country without truth-telling. In an Australian first, the Victorian Government has announced the establishment of a truth-telling process to recognise and address historic wrongs and ongoing injustices against Indigenous Australians. "After a shared understanding of our history, Australia looks more harmonious. It looks more cohesive. There is more love between people.... There is less hatred and racism. It looks safe for our young people. It looks encouraging for our young people and the future looks bright." Karlie Stewart, The Healing Foundation Youth Advisory Group http://ow.ly/Rs6M50AwkrA
