24.01.2022 Hi everyone just a quick reminder snake season is starting and with this awesome weather we have been getting these guys and many more will be coming out to get some rays and food.

23.01.2022 It can really happen that quickly. A young man lost his life trying to save his dog from a brownsnake yesterday. Eastern brown snakes have the second deadliest venom of all land snakes, they are one of australias most common snakes and not one to be messed with. I see the people who have killed them and are showing off with them on facebook and it makes me sick to think how stupid they could be and how close they came to causing death either to themselves or someone else. A c...ouple of years ago a man in QLD whacked a brownsnake in his backyard but didnt kill it. The snake then fled freightened for its life. It ducked under the fence and came out in the neighbours sandpit face to face with a child playing. The snake felt cornered and was injured so it bit the child and fled. From memory the child survived but it goes to show that it can go horribly wrong very quickly. If you do see a snake in your yardnor house call a licensed professional. 19.01.2022 Just a reminder for everyone, during these extremely hot days be sure to bring your pets in of a night as snakes will be more active during the night. We are also reaching that time of year where newborns will be everywhere. Dont be concerned about the siblings or the parents, snakes do not care for their young. Instead the new borns move off and fend for themselves trying to find a safe place to call home. If you sight a snake it is important you maintain sight of the snake and call one of us immediately. If you dont know how to treat snake bites then learn. The proper first aid can buy you a lot of time to get the proper treatment.

18.01.2022 Interesting read on Australian Snakes... DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important. In hospital we NO LONGER NEED to know the type of... snake; it doesn’t change treatment. 5 years ago we would do a test on the bite, blood or urine to identify the snake so the correct anti venom can be used. BUT NOW... we don’t do this. Our new Antivenom neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, so it doesn’t matter what snake bit the patient. Read that again- one injection for all snakes! Polyvalent is our one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins. 3000 bites are reported annually. 300-500 hospitalisations 2-3 deaths annually. Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish. While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season. Let’s start with a Basic overview. There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously) Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans. All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood). This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site. It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream). Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood. Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc. Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck. Back to the snake bite site. When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues). The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten. Stay still!!! Venom can’t move if the victim doesn’t move. Stay still!! Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream. In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further retard venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream. A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (don’t wash the area). Technique: Three steps: keep them still Step 1 Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite. Step 2: Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin. The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage. Step 3: Splint the limb so the patient can’t walk or bend the limb. Do nots: Do not cut, incise or suck the venom. Do not EVER use a tourniquet Don’t remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing. Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement. Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees. Bleeding - internally and bruising. Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing. Pain In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb, and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound. Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice. Final tips: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom. Photograph by Angus Emmott

18.01.2022 Summer is nearly here! The days are longer and the sun is out. This of course means our scaled friends will on the move! Now is the time to get those jobs done in preparation for the upcoming snake season. It is important to move all clutter from around you house that snakes could call home. Low shrubs and bushes make for great escapes for snakes so tending to your garden will help prevent snakes from entering your yard. If you have birds give their cage a clean, seed scatter...ed around will attract rodents which will attract snakes. You wont need that firewood now until winter so move that pile further from the house and keep it off the ground if you can. Walk around your house and make sure it is secure, check the condition of your fly screens, fill in holes that lead under concrete or under your house. Now that your yard and house are ready it is time for some education. Get the kids together and go through snakebite first aid and teach you kids about the snakes local to your area. Remind them to wear long pants and boots when going into the woods or camping where you may encounter snakes and teach them how to act if they find themselves near a snake. Remind them snakes are deaf so it is safe for them to scream out for help, just try not to make sudden movements. We don't have to be afraid of snakes, they have been around forever and they really like to keep to themselves, most of us have never even seen one in the wild. If in doubt remember you can always call myself for some help or advice. I also do yard inspections and am happy to teach snakebite first aid for those who are not confident. 16.01.2022 SNAKES ARE ON THE MOVE Just wanted to warn people that during these weeks of extreme heat it is very imprortant to make sure your house is snake secure! Doors closed and sealed. Holes bogged up with expanding foam and silicon.... Areas with shade should be clear of pot plants, dog blankets ect that snakes can hide under and enjoy the cool of the concrete on their bellies. Snakes will be looking for somehwere cool and safe to hide which is why they end up in our houses, garrages and car ports or in gardens with dense bushes. They will also be active at night so if you go outside make sure your path is clearly visible and bring your fluffy friends inside where they are safe. Snakes often find themselves tangled up with our pups because they are going to our dogs water bowels for a drink or a soak. In the weeks to come baby snakes will start appearing and be very active. Curious to find their place in the world and unaware of the dangers it presents they will turn up all over the place. Make sure you are confident in snake bite first aid and teach you family, make sure everyone knows where the bandages are! Stay safe everyone.

16.01.2022 I was doing a yard inspection just last night and as i always do i warned the client about snakes behind and under bins. Care should always be taken when moving your bins in the warmer weather as usually we are in thongs or sandles and if a snake is hiding behind it, it will feel cornered and be more likely to bite in defence. Plus you are likely to stand on it which will nearly certainly result in a bite. As always remaining aware of your surroundings is the best defence aga...inst snake bite.
