25.01.2022 When we are looking at developing new lucerne’s or developing new lucerne genetics, we are very focused on the forage attributes of the plants. We are looking for high leaf to stem ratio, nice leafy growth and we are also packaging that with its pest and disease profile, says Jo Williams, S&W Seed Company Australia Plant Breeder - Lucerne. #swseedco #40Years #agriculture #ResearchAndDevelopment

23.01.2022 Penfield Research Station, located in Virginia, South Australia, is the hub for S&W Seed Companys pasture focused research and education. 18-hectares of irrigated land is used for research and development of all key pasture species for Australian growers, encompassing lucerne, forage cereals, grasses, clovers, vetchs and many other crop types. The Penfield site is key also to S&Ws development of Goldstrike seed technology, with the seed treatment facility on site and field area to test new formulations and options. #swseedco #PenfieldResearchStation #GoldstrikeSeedTechnology

19.01.2022 Meet Jo. After completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with The University of Adelaide, Jo Williams travelled to Canada working on farms for a gap year. Returning to Australia, she coordinated the SARDI Lower Eyre Peninsula Field Crops Group, later NVT trials for five years. Jo is now S&W Seed Companys lucerne plant breeder. She coordinates the Australian domestic breeding program and works closely with the global team to bring you S&Ws unbeatable lucerne product range. #swseedco #lucerne #alfalfa #PlantBreeder #KeithSouthAustralia

15.01.2022 Like many of the grain growers on the Liverpool Plains this week, our wheat R&D team has been in full swing planting trials. With more than 15,000 varieties to test this year, it has been great to see some early rain to kick the season into gear. Having a 9-year product development cycle its critical for our researchers to make the most of every season to find that one very special variety to release to our farmers each year.

15.01.2022 Following the devastating Adelaide Hills bushfires, this 15-hectare pivot of Subzero Hybrid Forage Brassica was sown only five weeks ago. With it launching out of the ground, it will be grazed at the end of the month by Angus cattle. This paddock will then be oversown with Italian ryegrass to provide a bank of feed through winter well into summer. This Hills farmer is stoked with the outcome, it looks phenomenal. 15.01.2022 Shoots are up! Pasture Genetics Moby Forage Barley direct drilled into a four-year old paddock of L71 by Scenic Rim Lucerne at Kalbar, Qld. Moby is an early-maturing barley with excellent winter growth and rapid establishment. Moby offers an extended sowing window from mid-autumn to mid-winter. Seedling vigour in Moby is exceptional, being first to grazing in all Pasture Genetics forage cereal trials conducted to date. This paddock will be cut for barley/lucerne hay for the equine market in about 6-8 weeks Scenic Rim Lucerne say their customers (and their horses) love it! 14.01.2022 12 weeks after sowing, this custom perennial temperate pasture has established magnificently. This 240-hectare paddock on the Kings Plains, west of Glen Innes, is right ready to graze, but with low stock levels and an abundance of grass, it will be left to seed down this year. This photo was taken after a -6 degree Celsius frost. #swseedco #perennialpasture #customblend

14.01.2022 The advantage of having a global breeding program, based both in the northern and southern hemisphere is that we’re able to concurrently run evaluation sites, so we’re not missing that season of planting. For the farmer this means a quicker turnaround of material going from the evaluation stage to the commercial stage, says Jo Williams, S&W Seed Company Australia Plant Breeder - Lucerne. #swseedco #40Years #agriculture #ResearchAndDevelopment

10.01.2022 Merlewood Angus stud in South Gippsland, Victoria, sow S&W Seed Company Australia Outback Forage Oats every year for winter feed in their bull paddocks. These Angus bulls are enjoying their first graze in this paddock, which they will rotate through multiple times during the season. Outback is a mid-late maturing variety and grazing will extend the heading date, so rainfall pending, there will be an option for a bulky end of season hay cut as well. #swseedco #outbackforageoats #angusbulls

09.01.2022 S&W Seed Company International Wheat Breeder Chris Moore at Breeza, New South Wales, overseeing the harvest of our wheat trials. While harvest is underway there is still lots of R&D work that happens from here, for us the job is only half done! These samples then make their way to cereal chemistry labs where these varieties are put to the test, assessing quality, baking tests for dough properties and noodle quality evaluations, just to name a few! #swseedco #wheat #WheatBreeding #SeedPlots #ResearchAndDevelopment

09.01.2022 As always following a year of feed shortage, the requirements for early sown crops to start feeding hungry livestock will be in high demand. One particularly promising option for this sort of early sowing application is our new forage oat variety Bronco. 09.01.2022 Long-awaited rainfall across central west NSW has highlighted the benefit of hard seeded legumes in your pastures. 09.01.2022 This pasture smorgasbord is an S&W Seed Company custom blend. It contains a mix of Tower Summer Active Tall Fescue, Balance Chicory, Renegade Red Clover and Jumbo White Clover. The custom blend was developed to provide high-quality feed to fatten lambs over summer on heavy, river flat soils and it has done just that. #swseedco #pasture #CustomBlend

07.01.2022 This week S&W Seed Company Australia territory managers Rehn & Millie attended a field day at Darke Peak, Eyre Peninsula hosted by Platinum Ag Services Kimba. Following a string of below average years, local producers were eager to trial and evaluate alternative options outside the district standard. In what has been again a slightly below average year, there were some stand outs, other than the reliable medics and vetches that dominate the area. ... The drought tolerance and leading production of Subzero Hybrid Forage Brassica was quickly noted. Smart Radish too posed a convincing argument for fast feed, competing with even the forage cereals for vigour in the trial site. Unsurprisingly, Studenica Vetch (for release in 2021) starred with its winter production and early maturity positioning it better than other early maturing common vetches. #swseedco #subzerohybridforagebrassica #smartradish #studenicavetch #newrelease #trialsite #researchanddevelopment

07.01.2022 David Barnett, Pasture Genetics, with Shane Foster, Monarto Safari Park, collecting donated seed. We have proudly supported Monarto Safari Park, which is part of the Adelaide Zoo organisation, for many years. Monarto is currently closed to visitors, but they still have many mouths to feed. During COVID-19, Monarto, along with many other iconic Australian parks, has been forced to close, restricting income and revenue raising for pasture improvement. Pasture Genetics has don...ated a 2,000kg seed mix to the park, allowing for over 100Ha of pasture renovation to go ahead in 2020. On the back of some excellent opening rains to the season, this is already looking like a success for all involved. Many staff within our own organisation are avid zoo visitors and we all cant wait to get back to seeing our favourite animals in some lush greenery! #MonartoSafariPark See more
