20.01.2022 GYTBO we have had many queries from Uber Australian X drivers regarding the recent advice issued by the Australian Taxation Office. So we thought we would put together a quick and easy Q&A summary of the changes effective as of 1 August 2015. Do I need to register for GST if my turnover will be less then $75,000? Unfortunately regardless of turnover the ATO have advised that all UBER X drivers be registered for GST from dollar one. How do I register for GST? You will first ne...ed to register for an ABN and while you are doing that you can register for GST? How much will this cost me if you do it? We are happy to register an ABN on your behalf for $50 So how much do I need to put away for GST and how do I work this out? Unfortunately you will need to collect 10% of the total fare not what you receive from UBER. An easy way to calculate this is to divide the total fare amount by 11. E.g. Total fares for the day $308 the GST will be $28 ($308 / 11). What can I claim? The good news is that you will be entitled to all small business concessions which includes but no way limited too commission you pay to UBER and all accounting fees. What is BAS? BAS stands for Business Activity Statement and needs to be lodged quarterly. Essentially it is your Total Income the GST collected on the Income less the GST you paid on purchases. Can you do my BAS each quarter? We are more than happy to lodge your BAS each quarter which generally costs $50 per quarter if you present us with consolidated Total revenue and GST you paid on purchases. Can you do everything for me? We can do everything for you though find most business clients are comfortable preparing the figures for us after we run through the process with them. Just ask if you would like us to call you with more information. I have another job; how will this affect my tax? We find a lot of UBER X drivers also have other jobs and based on this we will be able to recommend an adequate amount of Tax to put away based on your turnover each quarter so there is no nasty surprise come tax time. Other than registering as a sole trader are there any other ways to protect my assets and reduce my liabilities? There are many other options other than setting up as a sole trader and we suggest talking to an accountant as everyones personal circumstances are different and it is not always one size fits all! To find out more or get in touch you can PM us or email our UBER expert [email protected] #taxhappy See more
