21.01.2022 "The thing about caring is, it doesn't stop when the world is in turmoil" Thank you to all the carers out there, the world is a better place, because of you. #NationalCarersWeek #Carers2020

19.01.2022 We know that at least 50% of people in residential aged care are living with some form of dementia. The true number is estimated to be much higher when includin...g those living with undiagnosed dementia. With the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), aged care workers tell us people living with dementia are feeling more anxious. Familiar routines have changed and news about the crisis is distressing. Caring for people living with dementia can be a challenging role. New restrictions can increase the stress experienced by those you care for resulting in changed behaviour or their health declining. As you try to keep people living with dementia safe and respond to their needs, the expectations on you might feel overwhelming. We want to show our appreciation for your work and help you better support people living with dementia. That’s why the Centre of Dementia Learning is offering free online education to the aged care industry until June 30. Sign up today to our mail list at https://bit.ly/2YL5vsy to receive free access to our online courses. Use the promo code: OFB

15.01.2022 Thank you so much for the beautiful words. It is our pleasure to have supported your family.

08.01.2022 This is beautiful and a timely reminder in today’s world The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’cl...ock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. I love it, she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room . just wait. That doesn’t have anything to do with it, she replied. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life. She went on to explain, Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still depositing. And with a smile, she said: Remember the five simple rules to be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less Could you share what your 5 rules be for a happy life? www.sharethedignity.com.au #happiness #kindness #makingadifference

08.01.2022 When should you give people with dementia space? If you know someone with dementia, there may be situations where you are tempted to take charge. Instead, try t...o consider how you can give a person with dementia more space so they can retain their independence and self-worth. Some ways you can support are: when the person is trying to solve a problem, give them the space and time to work it out on their own. Ask them if they need your help and how they’d like you to help them. if the person isn’t responding to you verbally, be patient and give them time. Try not to rush the person or speak for them. when the person is performing a task, give them plenty of time and try not to take over or micromanage them. Not sure if you are giving your friend or loved one enough space? Take the quiz on our page below to find out. This week is Dementia Action Week, a week to understand the discrimination that people living with dementia face and the small changes and support that can make a lot of difference. 07.01.2022 DAY 4 : Dementia Action Week Here are some tips to keep in mind when communicating with people with dementia: -Allow enough time for what you’ve said to be understood and for the person to finish what they are saying... -Remain calm and talk in a matter-of-fact way -Keep sentences short and simple, and focus on one idea at a time
