19.01.2022 The highs and lows of taking tea - Part 2: As the tea tradition expanded from the Victorian elite to the working class, the reference High Tea was developed. Considered the main meal of the day and often taken either standing up or seated upon tall stools (thus high) at around 6pm, fare typically consisted of meat, bread, vegetables, and - of course - tea. #hadleysorienthotel

18.01.2022 The Hadley’s Art Prize is presented by Hadley's Orient Hotel . Hadley’s has a long history with art from art collector landlord Howard Hadley in the late 1800...s, to major exhibitions in the 1920s and ‘30s. Early landlord Howard Hadley won a landscape art prize in 1895, and embarked on painting lessons in Victoria before returning to Hobart to run the hotel. Current majority owners of Hadley’s Orient Hotel, Don Neil and Annette Reynolds, dreamt up the idea of the art prize on the 90th anniversary of the hotel’s first solo exhibition a series of landscape paintings by John Eldershaw. Don Neil’s first encounter with Hadley’s was when he was nineteen, selling shoes in one of the rooms of the hotel. Many years later after success in the shoe business, Don purchased Hadley’s Orient Hotel from receivers and employed an expert team to sensitively restore the historic hotel to the special place he remembered. For Don Neil, the Hadley’s Art Prize is about giving back to the art community. By bringing art back to the historic walls of the hotel through a landscape prize like the one Howard Hadley won all those years ago Hadley’s has become a place to celebrate the works of contemporary Australian landscape artists. #discovertasmania See more

17.01.2022 The highs and lows of taking tea - Part 1: During the 1880s it was customary among the upper-class and society women to change into long gowns, gloves and hats and convene for afternoon tea in the gardens, drawing room or parlour. This practice, with an emphasis on presentation and conversation, was also known as low tea in reference to the low armchairs and side tables at which guests were seated. The tradition of taking tea became so popular among affluent classes that it fast became one of the mainstays of the British way of life. #hadleysorienthotel

Caitlin works in sculptural installation and her p...ractice explores history, place and memory. Caitlin has been working on an exhibition titled Sweet Water. This exhibition will transform part of Hadleys into an oasis that merges the past with the present, the seen with the discovered, and the pastry shop with the fernery. Held within the historic walls of Hadleys Orient Hotel, Sweet Water reimagines the Hadleys of the early 1800s, which included a pastry shop, Victorian fountain and lush gardens. Where there is light, there is shadow, and the exhibition also explores Hobarts dark colonial history, investigating themes of takeover and invasion. ...
