25.01.2022 Congratulations To our clever nurse Shannon... who has finished her certificate IV in veterinary nursing and is now a fully qualified veterinary nurse We were more than happy to share her celebratory cakes

25.01.2022 Thanks to the Owens family, who have successfully campaigned to have the labelling on Multicrop EDTA snail pellets changed. Most vets know of pets who have succumbed to the effects of this product. The previous packaging contained statements suggesting that if you care for your pets you’ll use the product, and that it’s safe to use around dogs and cats. The fine print then states the opposite. Thanks also to Australian Consumer Protection who, after the Owen’s family’s efforts, applied pressure on Multicrop when Bunnings disappointingly refused to do so.

22.01.2022 Please Help We have over 300 cats in our care on site, over 500 in foster and over 150 available for adoption - but our adoptions have slowed down to just a f...ew per day! If you’re thinking about adopting, now is the time to do it! And if you can’t adopt yourself, please share to your family, friends, colleague, bus driver, chemist, anyone who will listen! We’ve opened up our Thursday night schedule for late night adoption to try and get as many people through our doors as possible - please head to our website to book as we do still have to adhere to social distancing guidelines. All adult cats (with some exclusions*) are available to adopt for $17 to celebrate Saint Catrick’s Day, including adult cats in Foster Care who are met or inquired about this week, until Sunday 21 March. *This offer does not extend to cats available for adoption through our External Adoption Centres See more

22.01.2022 CHRISTMAS RAFFLE COMPETITION Thanks to all who bought tickets for our raffle! We raised over $300 for Perth Chihuahua Rescue. Congratulations to Steve Prada who won the raffle.

21.01.2022 Ewww! Poor Kobe is crawling in doggy nits! Pediculosis is an infestation of blood sucking Anoplura lice or biting Mallophaga lice. Two sucking lice are known to occur in the dog: Linognathus setosus and Heterodoxus spiniger. Below is the offending creature immersed in paraffin oil and viewed with microscopy. The warmer weather means we are seeing more flea and insect bites. Please monitor your pets for itching and check their coat for fleas. ... Fortunately for Kobe and his mum, biting lice are easily killed with most flea preventatives.

19.01.2022 Poor Winnie had a stick lodged in her oesophagus and up her nose. Unfortunately the stick was not visible on radiographs, and was detected with endoscopy. On...ce we pulled it up a few centimetres (with graspers) via the oesophagus, the tip came out of her nose! We checked her nose and oesophagus afterwards, and apart from a few abrasions, she was ok. Needless to say Winnie was feeling better straight away Videos are in the comments :)

17.01.2022 Merry Christmas from our family to yours!

09.01.2022 NEW CHANGES TO DOGS ON COCKBURN BEACHES - 21 OCT To protect the area’s nesting shorebirds, including federally protected species that migrate annually from th...e northern hemisphere, dogs will be prohibited at Woodman Point beach as of 21 Oct, from Ammo Jetty heading south around the headland to the dog beach at Jervoise Bay. Any negative impacts to shorebirds will also trigger referral of the area’s use as a dog beach to the Department of Ag, Water and the Envn for assessment. Breaches can result in civil or criminal penalties. The decision follows significant objection from the community and stakeholders about dogs on beaches and adverse findings from an independent Environmental Impact Assessment. The new change is detailed in the recently adopted Animal Management & Exercise Plan (AMEP). Approx 40 per cent of Cockburn’s coast remains accessible to dogs, including parts of C.Y. O’Connor Beach and Jervoise Bay Beach. The City’s new AMEP includes 9 new off-leash dog exercise areas at large public open spaces and 2 new dog parks in the future. 09.01.2022 Meet cute Gigi! Gigi slipped over and broke her shin bone (tibia). To enable rapid return to full leg function, surgery was recommended to fix the bone. Although casting is an option for this type of fracture, abnormal limb use in the cast can contribute to skeletal developmental abnormalities such as knee dislocation, muscle contracture and hip dysplasia. Casting also requires strict cage rest for a period of 3-5 weeks and the challenge of keeping it clean and dry in an exuberant and playful puppy! We are happy report that Gigi is doing very well

08.01.2022 Frank is a lovely boy who presented to us for enucleation of his left eye due to glaucoma Glaucoma is a painful elevation in intraocular pressure beyond that which is compatible with healthy ocular tissue. His condition is likely secondary to chronic uveitis (inflammation of the uvea - a layer of tissue in the eye wall). There are many possible causes of uveitis in cats, some common aetiologies include FeLV, FIV, toxoplasmosis, trauma and many more. ... While the removal of the affected eye may seem like a painful and drastic measure, the surgery provides the best long term outcome for the animal. We are happy to report that Frank is still as handsome as ever and is living his best life as the one eyed wonder

08.01.2022 On the weekend our vets, Michael and Jess, attended a surgery practical workshop as part of their two year postgraduate studies to achieve an Advanced Certificate in Small Animal Surgery. It wasn’t all hard work though .

06.01.2022 It's a week before Christmas, and all through the Haven The adult cats see the kittens go to the loving homes, they are so desperately cravin' You see, it's... scary being in a shelter no matter how hard we try And we so do try, and we try But with so many lights, and noises, even the most confident cat becomes a very shy guy And when the cats cower, and hide and hiss, it's harder to see, it's just a loving home that they miss So when you come to the shelter, please open your hearts and give these homeless, once kittens, now cats, a home and a chance We have so many cats waiting for their forever homes, please rescue a cat from the shelter or share this post to help us find people that can Walk ins are very welcome all weekend but short waits may apply if appointments have been pre-booked

04.01.2022 Here is Gigi the day after her fracture repair

04.01.2022 It's grass seed season again! Don't forget to check your dog's paws after walks and avoid long grasses. Grass seeds in the ears and paws are common. Grass seeds can even become migrating foreign bodies- moving from one part of the body to another.

02.01.2022 HAPPY HALLOWEEN We’d love to see photos of your pets in dress up if you have any . Please share in the comments below .

01.01.2022 The cat jam ... see you in the shed!! #repost

01.01.2022 Meet the loving Denzel Denzel presented to us for profuse bleeding from his penis. The source of bleeding was a massive angry tumor (Squamous cell carcinoma) growing along his penile shaft. To stop the bleeding, and remove the tumor with appropriate margins, Drs Jess and Emma performed a subtotal penile amputation and scrotal urethrostomy (new urination hole). ... We are so thrilled to report that Denzel is doing very well! He is no longer bleeding and is urinating well through his urethrostomy site!
