24.01.2022 "...because anyone can have an odd day." Today is Odd Socks Day. Odd Socks Day is a National Mental Health Anti-Stigma Campaign, developed and run by Grow Australia since 2013. The intent of Odd Socks Day is that Australians wear odd socks to show that anyone can have an odd day. By wearing odd socks, this promotes conversations and demonstrates understanding that people struggling with their mental health are not alone.... One in two Australians will experience a mental health problem some time in their lives, but we know that many recover and maintain their health and wellbeing. Seeking help early and having the support and understanding from family, friends and work colleagues are important aspects to making a full recovery. Book an appointment today to see your GP if you are struggling with your mental health or worried about a friend, family member or colleague by calling the clinic on 5572 2422.

24.01.2022 It takes 66 days to create a habit, and most Australians have been in different stages of lockdown for longer than that. During COVID-19, research shows more people are drinking, and people are drinking more. A survey of 1,000 Australians aged 18-65 also found 12 per cent of people drank more alcohol than usual during lockdown, and 10% said that on average, they drank more than the recommended National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) draft guidelines, cons...uming more than 11 standard drinks per week. This increases the risk of alcohol-related injury and diseases like cancer. Even small increases to the amount of alcohol you drink can become harder to shift over time. It’s more important than ever that we prioritise our health and wellbeing. The less alcohol people consume, the lower the risk of alcohol-related accidents, injuries, dependence and chronic illness, such as cancer. Less alcohol can also help people feel less stressed or anxious, sleep better, lose weight, improve relationships and save money.

24.01.2022 OCTOBER IS LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH Did you know that 90% of lupus sufferers are women between 15 and 45? Lupus is a chronic, complex and prevalent autoimmune disease that affects more than 20,000 Australians. ... It is difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are wide-ranging, can come and go, often mimic those of other diseases, plus there is no single laboratory test that can definitively identify that someone has lupus. Early detection and treatment is the key to a better health outcome and can usually lessen the progression and severity of the disease. Lupus affects mainly women. Lupus is one of Australia’s least recognized major diseases. While lupus is widespread, awareness and accurate knowledge about it is lacking. Women of a non-Caucasian background are two to three times more at risk for lupus than Caucasians. In lupus, the immune system, which is designed to protect against infection, creates antibodies that attack the body’s own tissues and organs. It can affect any organ or system head to toe in the body, including the kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, blood, skin, and joints. Lupus is a leading cause of premature cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and stroke among young women. Some of the signs and symptoms that may suggest systemic lupus include: Painful or swollen joints, Fingertips and/or toes become pale or purple from the cold or stress, Sores in the mouth or nose, Low blood count, Red rash or color change on the face, across the cheek or bridge of nose, Unexplained fever for several days, Chest pain associated with breathing, Protein in the urine, Extreme fatigue feeling tired all the time, Sensitivity to the sun, Depression, trouble thinking, and/or memory problems and Unusual hair loss, mainly on the scalp.

07.01.2022 NATIONAL SKIN CANCER ACTION WEEK - 17 - 23 November Most skin cancers can be prevented by the use of good sun protection. National Skin Cancer Action Week, urges all Australians to use the five forms of sun protection. These are: Slip on sun-protective clothing.... Slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen. Slap on a broad-brimmed hat. Seek shade. Slide on sunglasses. A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes, are key. The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chance of avoiding surgery or, in the case of a serious melanoma or other skin cancer, potential disfigurement or even death. It's important to get to know your skin and what is normal for you, so that you notice any changes. Skin cancers rarely hurt and are much more frequently seen than felt. Develop a regular habit of checking your skin for new spots and changes to existing freckles or moles. If you are concerned about any new spots on changes on your skin make an appointment with your GP for a skin check.

05.01.2022 The biggest benefit of wearing a mask is that if you’re sick even if you don’t know it yet you protect those around you from getting sick too. So do it for ...the retail staff putting your purchases through. Do it for your colleagues and your mates. Do it for the bus driver. Over the last few months, we have come to be quite... familiar with hand sanitiser but did you know it is not the preferred method of cleaning your hands? Regularly washing for at least 20 seconds with a bit of soap and warm water is the best way to clean your hands and protect yourself from anything nasty that you might have picked up on your travels. However, sometimes that just isn’t practical. If you are at the shops, or can’t access running water or soap, sanitiser can be very handy indeed it doesn’t replace the need to regularly wash your hands. More on the importance of good hygiene: dhhs.vic.gov.au/staying-safe-covid-19
