24.01.2022 Hello Hammond Parkians, I’m Dean Mercer (unfortunately not the extremely successful triathlete) and I’ll be joining the Hammond Park Team as the new English Teacher in 2021. Saying I’m excited is a bit of an understatement. I hope to make the most of this opportunity by actively being a part of this amazing community and fostering the Wellbeing focus that the College emphasises to ensure students are happy, healthy and well-rounded. I graduated from Curtin with a Bachelor o...f Education and a love of literature that inspired me to form the Young Inkling Society a youth writing club - a club I hope to bring across to Hammond Park. Every year this love of literature also manifests itself around Book Week, where I dress up every day of the week to build up the excitement around reading and writing. My favourite part of being an English Teacher is the fact I get to teach the power of Language and how to use it artfully. To use language artfully is a skill, and a by-product of Language Arts is the representation and reflection of the real world and its history in the form of stories. Literature. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs places emphasis on belonging and through the construction of characters assuming they are accurately represented everyone can find a place to belong between the pages of a novel. Language can easily cut like a sword, and literature acts a shield defending us from repeating past mistakes to become better. We are responsible for passing on these powerful tools. With great power, comes great responsibility and this burden is willingly carried by English teachers. Why? If not us, then who? Who else but English teachers will spend hours upon hours reading stories, new and old, in the hope of catching a glimpse of the world reflected artfully through a marginalised perspective? Who else but us can understand the importance and foster the appreciation vital for a wider culture of reading that promotes enjoyment, not assessment. Bring on 2021! Dean Mercer See more

Our students were outstanding and demonstrated our College values of Wellbeing, Excellence and Relationships wonderfully throughout the entire night. A special thank you must go to Ms Yusof the Year 7 Coordinator for all... her assistance in planning this wonderful night, DJ Clint Wiltshire for the brilliant tunes and lighting effects, Mr Chambers for being our resident superstar photographer and all our staff who came along and supported this wonderful event and assisted both in the lead up to the event and in many ways throughout the night. Please enjoy a small collection of photos from the night, more to come. Ms Miller.

14.01.2022 Heartfelt thank you to the Webb family for their lovely gift of some Christmas decorations for our new tree in Admin. The words represent the Class Charter words developed by the students through Homeroom. These words represent how our current Year 7 students want to be known and remembered and now they hang proudly on our tree with a foundation ornament. We are grateful for the kind gift.

13.01.2022 A warm welcome to Gemma My name is Gemma Garbutt and I am very excited to also be joining Hammond Park Secondary College next year as a Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) teacher. I have a passion for all the Humanities subjects; Geography, History, Economics and Civics & Citizenship as they help us to understand our world, past and present, and help us to develop ways to respond to challenges, now and in the future. I have worked and lived in the local community for many ...years and I know the teens and young adults in this area have the potential to achieve whatever they set their minds to. This is why I am excited about working with the students and staff at HPSC and helping create an environment where all can flourish. I previously completed Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University and worked in private enterprise and government before pursuing a career in Education. I have experience teaching HaSS across all year levels from 7 to 12. I am looking forward to helping our students succeed socially and academically and preparing them for whatever future study or career options are best suited to meet their needs. I am extremely excited to get to know all the staff, students and parents at Hammond Park Secondary College in 2021. Gemma Garbutt

02.01.2022 Congratulations to all Year 7 English students who bravely shared their writing yesterday in the writer’s workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to share students’ writing with an authentic audience and seek constructive feedback using the PQP: Praise, Question, Polish format. Staff across the college were invited to join the café style workshops to give feedback to students. A big thank you to staff who gave freely of their time to share this experience with our students, ...and to our fabulous English team Miss Chapman and Mrs Corbett for their organisation and guidance. It was wonderful to be in the classrooms and see our students learning journeys. Mrs Willesee
