25.01.2022 Unicorns Some may say I should not believe In things that can't be true But my heart believes one must exist... As real as me and you So I don't listen to those that swear That things they cannot see aren't there I'm a unicorn, free and wild, And someday I will find myself a child. Author unknown

23.01.2022 Morning Mantra: "I am going to succeed because I'm stubborn enough to think I can." If you don't believe in yourself why should anyone else? You are your bigge...st influence so dig deep and find that determination, that strength, that unwavering faith. It's there- buried under all the self-doubt, negative programming, and feelings of unworthiness. The fear of failure keeps most people out of the game. Yet once you’ve experienced failure, and picked yourself back up again, what’s left to fear? Now that you survived, you know you can. So use that knowledge to fuel the fire, to be so stubborn in your quest that you will not to give up. Some people succeed because they were destined to, most succeed because they are determined to. #BeDetermined #BeHappy #BeHorsey #BeHippie #HorseHippie #MorningMantra #InspirationalQuotes

23.01.2022 Those who have not done much distance riding will probably have been told that letting a ridden horse graze is one of the cardinal sins. As is letting a thirsty... horse drink as much as it wants--- Those who have done lots of distance riding will absolutely have been told that NOT letting the horse graze or drink while on trail is a cardinal sin, because colic, induced by the slowing down of gut motility, is one of the real dangers of prolonged exertion. Dehydration is another one. It is a big reason that many distance horses are ridden in hackamores, to make it easier for the horse to both eat and drink more while covering those miles. Just because grumpy Miss Snodfuss told you something in Pony Club does not necessarily mean that it applies in all instances.

21.01.2022 Love sharing the Love.... When we allow ourselves to heal... we allow ourselves to be vulnerable... We allow ourselves to trust and believe in us... Magic can happen... Shedding old layers, that no longer serve us.... Raising our vibrations and finding inner calm and peace. And that reflects back on our animals. They know " stuff" long before we do. Interested in Animal Assisted Kinesiology sessions? What do they help with? What actually is it? How much is it? How long does a session take? Pm me for more info and availability

21.01.2022 Always a good reminder: A young cowboy worked with some horses in the round pen. An older cowboy came by, watched for a while, and then asked the young cowboy: ..."Young man, do you want to know the secret of good horsemanship?" The young cowboy said he did. The old man made a fist and said: "If you can open my fist you will learn the secret of good horsemanship." The young man squeezed, poked, shook, hit and stroked his fist. Finally he said: "I can't open your fist! What's the secret to opening it so I can learn the secret of good horsemanship? " The old cowboy said: "You could have asked ...

20.01.2022 "Breaking down the barriers" ..... But, should we call it breaking? Or is it simply allowing the horse to express an opinion... They could simply be asking to be heard, seen AND listened too? When we manage to have a handle on our own Ego, when we allow a conversation rather then the I'm telling you now....we might be allowed to look behind the barriers...... This young QH was near impossible to be treated. Any opportunity he would, grab, nib, bite, push, shuff and anything else he could think off. No fault of his own...just some major Misunderstandings.... Miscommunications... Lucky his owner is ready to listen... Not just to me... but him...

19.01.2022 I understand that dissections are not for everyone, for those likeminded riders and owners (who like me want to feel and see the tissue and understand how and w...hy things work, odd i know ), the value and knowledge gained from the dissections is immeasurable. These observations are mine as an individual and are obviously impacted by my thoughts and emotions surrounding horse care and always wanting the best for my horse. A couple of things really hit home at this dissection: 1) How incredibly brave the owner was to make this decision in the best interest of her horse, then to watch the dissection to gain answers regarding the difficulties her mare had, had and hopefully gain peace of mind that she made the right decision. 2) How much unseen and often unfelt damage there can be from what appears to be a relatively straight forward injury, such as running into a gate or landing on a pole with their hind legs. 3) How serious subchondral bruising can be, with no way of treating it. 4) How little protection (soft tissue) there is around the legs from the hocks and knees down. (I am personally very happy to keep using boots or bandages when working) 5) How much fascia / connective tissue there is throughout the body, and what far reaching effect fascial restrictions and adhesions can have on muscle use and pain. 6) How horrific and serious compensatory damage can be, often worse than the injured leg. 7) That I thank my lucky stars for the fact that I am anal and have always used the best joint and body support available to me, to ensure that my horse is always in the best condition and health possible. 8) That holistic care of the whole horse is imperative to their soundness and functionality long term. 9) That as owners and riders it is our responsibility to know as much about our horse’s bodies and how they work, to help avoid soundness issues or to combat them to the best of our abilities. 10) Surround yourself with the best team and products, to help you keep your horse sound, happy and healthy. That means your farrier, physio, therapist, saddle fitter, groom, nutritionist etc, everyone has a role to play and value to offer.

17.01.2022 This below.... In a couple of recent Kinesiology sessions my beautiful clients had been quite detached from their true emotions, and even their body's... Once we had balanced the body and the mind, the conscious " judge " tried to step in... Tried to convince that this " new feeling" of happy, balanced, calm, confident etc wasn't a good place to be in, because they hadn't expierienced those good feels in such a long time, and even so no one consciously wants to feel heav...y, lethargic etc... when we have been in fight and flight for a long time, it is the body's and minds safety zone... It's what we know... But trust me... With patience, perseverance and a bit of grit... We can change the spiraling back into the darkness, and into the light. Sometimes it may take a few sessions... I can't predict your bodys and minds healing journey, but I sure can be there to guide and hold you Human and Equine Kinesiology sessions are something one has to expierience, to truly understand what healing can be all about. Pm me now for bookings in 2021. *Watch this space for some fantastic packages for Horse and Riders * Sound Healing * Guided Meditations And much more ....

16.01.2022 COOL CALCULUS CASE OF A SALIVARY STONE Tali came to see us at Ascot Equine a few ago because her owners had noticed a firm mass on the side of her face. A thoro...ugh work up, including an oral exam, ultrasound and radiographs, revealed a cigar shaped radio-opaque object with smooth edges. Can you see the object in the X-ray image!?! Based on our findings, this mass was diagnosed as a sialolith. Sialoliths are stones that form within the salivary gland or duct. The reason they form is a mystery, but a theory is that they begin when a bit of plant material enters the salivary duct and then calcifies. The cigar-shaped sialolith was successfully removed surgically using an intra-oral approach with sedation and local anaesthesia. We are pleased to say we rechecked Tali last week and she hasn’t missed a beat since surgery! #horse #equinevet #veterinarian #equinepractice #equinemedicine #equinesurgery #equinedentistry #ascotequinevets #equinehospital #diagnosticcentre #excellence #integrity #compassion

15.01.2022 Before backing your youngster please read - A horse ages roughly 3 times faster than a human. So a 90 year old human is a 30 year old horse. Both very old, usu...ally arthritic, don’t have many of their original teeth left, and very likely retired and enjoying the finer things in life. A 25 year old horse is a 75 year old human. Still works so far. A 20 year old horse is a 60 year old human. At that point where the body doesn’t work like it use to but the brain is all there and wants to be active. A 13 year old horse is a 39 year old human. Middle aged, prime of their life where their knowledge and physical ability are about equal. So let’s get down to the babies and work our way up. A 3 year old horse is a 9 year old child. A child. Not ready for work by a long stretch. We have moved past sending children down the mines. A 4 year old horse is a 12 year old child. Often will do odd jobs for pocket money, maybe a paper round, mowing lawns etc. Basically a 4 yo horse can start a bit of light work to earn their keep. A 5 year old horse is a 15 year old teenager. Think they know it all, cocky, and ready to up their work and responsibilities. Still quite weak and not fully developed so shouldn’t be at their physical limit but can start building strength. A 6 year old horse is an 18 year old human. An adult. Ready to work hard. Pushing your youngster too hard too young will result in failure of many body parts. Joints, tendons, ligaments as well as their brains. Waiting one year at the beginning can give a horse another 10 years of useful working life. Be patient with your pride and joy! Written by Vicky Fowler

14.01.2022 Navicular disease We are getting close to finishing a surgical research paper with Dr. Noah Cohen at Texas A &M on this project. The results are looking good... so far Since I first became a veterinarian I have hated this disease in horses and my goal has always been to defeat it. It used to be called navicular disease and over the years the name has changed many times. Whatever you want to call it....it is extremely common in the kind of horses that we practice on and has been the end of more athletic careers than anything else by far. In 2008 a group of veterinarians at Colorado State University developed a novel approach to allow surgical access to the navicular area of horses. Later, In 2012 a veterinarian in England named Ian Wright began carrying out surgical procedures in that area to correct some of the soft tissue problems encountered there . He works on mostly sport horses and we work on western horses. We wanted to see how well it worked in the horses that come to our practice.... and we were amazed at the good it did. In certain cases, we have modified the surgery to adapt to particular problems by adding some cyst drilling osteostixis to decompress the bone . This surgery is done through two very small incisions with the arthroscope, working inside the hoof. It is the most exciting thing I have done in my career. A few weeks ago I gave a talk to veterinarians in California about the procedure and, in preparing for the talk I gathered some statistics on the effectiveness of the surgery that we have seen so far Most of the horses we have done the procedure on are what we title as end stage. Which means no other treatment is working on them and they are effectively no longer able to be used for their intended purpose. I used the first 100 cases we did the surgery on and found that 62 percent that had the lesions described by Dr. Wright were back to doing their athletic event. These numbers are in line with what Dr. Wright found in England. The surgery is of course coupled with mechanically corrected shoeing and physical therapy post-op. Not all horses with navicular disease fit the criteria for the surgery, but it seems to be a source of hope for those that do. I have been a vet for 30 years and I have spent the entire course of those years trying to find a way to help these horses continue doing what makes them and their owners smile. It has been a blessing to still be so excited about being a vet after all these years. And this procedure, that the vets in Lamesa, Texas have adapted , has kept me motivated and feeling so lucky to get to practice veterinary medicine. The use of MRI diagnostics on the equine foot has opened many doors on this front. We can see problems in this area that we never knew existed just a few years back. Now we can identify them and as time goes by, we are developing ways to correct the problems. Veterinary medicine is at the forefront of the mechanics of motion and we are making strides that I never dreamed of thirty years ago. I hope this opens the door for more research in the areas of genetics, nutrition, mechanics (shoeing and trimming), medicine, and surgery.

14.01.2022 These are great RIDING RULES FOR Middle Aged HORSEWOMEN 1) We DO NOT need to show up with our hair combed and wearing makeup and a clean shirt. 2) Moaning, groa...ning and complaining about aching muscles is perfectly acceptable, as is taking Motrin (or something stronger) prior to a ride. 3) Helping someone on or off the horse does not mean the rider is an invalid. It only means the horse got taller overnight. 4) No one will comment about how big someone's butt looks in a saddle. 5) Everyone will wait patiently while someone dismounts and adjusts equipment. They will also wait patiently until that person re-mounts and is ready to move on--no matter how long that takes. 6) When a horse is acting up, we will just accept that it is having a bad hair day - it is not the rider's fault. 7) Mentioning that it is too hot, too dry, too humid, too cold, too wet, too buggy, etc., is considered self-expression, not whining. 8)Wanting to be first, last, walk, or just stop does not mean the rider is a wimp. Sometimes it is necessary to teach a horse who is in charge. 9) We will take time to discuss the important issues of the day, like who is dating who, who is cheating on who and any other relevant information that needs to be passed on. 10) We will acknowledge that horses are very strange animals and that sometimes, for no reason at all, we fall off of them. If this happens to any rider, the other riders will ascertain that the person is okay and then not mention the incident to another living soul, especially husbands and significant others. 11) Our horses are not fat, they are "big-boned." 12) We need to keep this riding thing mysterious and strange-sounding. If everyone finds out how much fun it is, the price of horses will go up and we will not be able to afford a dozen of them. 13) If we want, we can show up in English helmets and boots and ride in a western saddle if we feel like it, so we can take more stuff with us and no one is allowed to make comments.

13.01.2022 Do you struggle to sleep? Waking up in the middle of the night, heart racing, tight chest, sweaty palms? Do you sometimes feel like you are not good enough? Do you yell at your kids or partner?... Do you comfort yourself with unhealthy foods, alcohol or maybe even drugs, to turn off the discomfort or stress in your body? Do you suffer from headaches, migraines, anxiety, eating disorders, depression, interrupted sleep? What about physical symptoms ? Back pain? Hip pain? Neck and Shoulders? And have you tried almost everything to make you feel better? How about giving Neurolinguistict Kinesiology a go? You have nothing to loose... only health and happiness to gain. We often feel like we need to shut up and put up... BUT... do we? Live is too short in my eyes, for our loved ones, but mainly for ourselves, we need to start taking actions, to heal ourselves. I love Kinesioligy for many reasons, but just to name a few : * it means time out for ME ( refilling my cup) * being able to talk to someone who will not judge my " symptoms " * a holistic approach, adressing Childhood patterns, emotional imbalances, bodywork ( releasing tight muscles), meridian and chakra work And the best thing about this is...it's my body's own response ( through muscle testing) as to what I need. I am currently offering some limited availabilities at my home clinic South of Beaudesert ( Introduction price $ 110 for the first session, follow up $100) For mobile Equine Assisted Kinesiology and Equine Bodywork please enquire for pricing.

13.01.2022 Perfect write up by a colleague of mine... Why I don't just nearly mearly suggest stretches :) Always handy when we can refer back from our own personal experience

12.01.2022 Whirlwind last week with another Massage Certificate taught for Equestricare Equine Sports Therapy , and what a lovely bunch of students I met yet again. Super excited to see quite a few of the last students qualifying and making a living out of our passion. Then after being flooded in for a day or so, Lilly and I ventured out to Marburg to attend and lecture about Bodywork at our QLD Endurance Junior Bootcamp. What a lovely bunch of upcoming Junior Riders our Sport has to lo...ok forward too. Toft Endurance provided a super venue, and an amazing bunch of horses. Kelsey did a fantastic job, especially considering the challenging weather conditions. Chris showed the kids some valuable Riding skills, and Dr Harry spoke about vetting at events and much more. KER Nutritionist also zoomed with the kids. Very blessed for all of those opportunities, making the Horse / Rider/Owner relationship an even stronger one.

10.01.2022 Maybe I need to call my Kinesiology sessions Animal Assisted sessions, rather then just Equine Assisted Young Butcher bird here, sat 30 cm away from clients head, and not much further from me... Somehow that song " Love is in the Air", pops to my mind. Are you ready for some magic?? Ready to shift some blocks?

10.01.2022 I have been an Equine Massage Therapist for over 10 years now. It started with Emmet, followed by Cranial Sacral work, Sports Massage etc.all for horses... And of late Humans of course. Yesterday however was a first ..... I had been asked by a lovely lady, to come and treat her donkeys. One is in her 20's, the other 6 yrs old. Donkeys can easily age into their 40's. Both donkeys are mares, that have had foals and a story to tell. The older mare was first... Initially I was like, donkey... horse... Sure same same but different, let's see what happens. I was maybe a quarter into the treatment as I had this overwhelming feeling... A feeling of gratitude... True connection to a wisdom that I couldn't explain... It suddenly hit me... This beautiful wise, gentle donkey mare had just fully opened up her heart for me. She had allowed me into her space, I had asked permission of course, I had respected her space, the time she needed... But most importantly... I had recognised and acknowledged that it was actually her giving me some healing at the same time. I imagined her as this wise old gin that has been around for centuries granting people wishes, but only if the people asked the right questions with the due amount of respect. The owner and I both had a cry (a good cry) together, feeling just so special having met this wise, grounded, compassionate soul... I know have a totally new perception of donkeys. See more

09.01.2022 As much as I love this career, it can be draining. We see some horses in painful condition. We start out thinking we can help them all, and along the way come ...across horses that confound us and don't respond the way we expect. It's easy to slip into thinking we have failed. But I truly believe we come across these horses for a reason. "I honestly believe that God puts these horses in my path to keep me humble, and to keep me knowing that we don't know what we think we know. You have to always be looking at the whole picture. We can't ever be arrogant about thinking we can help them all with the knowledge base we have, because even when you try to learn everything you can learn, you still don't know it all." - Dr. Debra Taylor You haven't failed- you're exactly where you're supposed to be on your learning journey.

08.01.2022 Good Morning;) North Brisbane/Gympie / Imbil area I am heading up your way on the 22/23 of February and have a few spots left.... If you have been wanting a session for your horse, for yourself or for you both, please get in touch See more

06.01.2022 Something super exciting happened today... Funny how the universe " offers" the right thing for you.... I have been offered a space for my Human Kinesiology sessions. #lushcrystals# are a beautiful shop in the lovely town of Boonah Qld.... I will be available at their Healing space Wednesday's, starting on the 4th of November. A super special half price Introductory rate will be offered for the first 4 weeks. ( $ 60 instead of $ 120) * What is involved? Neurolinguistict Kinesiology is based on traditional Kinesiology, which finds it's origin in the Chiropractic application. Additionally we work with meridians, chakras, and other structural bodywork. It can aid with physical pain, emotional trauma and so much more... The first session usually takes around 90 min, and involves some time getting to know you, as the client, listening without judgment or making you feel like your problem is not real... The 2nd half is spend on the table, where through muscle testing, the body's stress response is being interpreted by me, and a number of modalities can be applied. When the body is stuck in fight or flight... The brain can try to take over, but the body doesn't lie. In a very nurturing approach, I will help you to gain some peace, balance and comfort back into your life. Each and every session is unique, totally tailored to your own personal needs. Still not sure what it is ? Sounds a bit scary, but intriguing? Let me assure you, you are in safe, caring hands. And sometimes all we need, is someone who will listen. Not really the "spiritual" type? That's totally fine... Some aspects of the session can be excersises to help gain mental focus, muscle tension relief or even stress point massage. It really is YOUR session... Appointments by booking preffered. But let's be honest, if you are in town, walking past, feeling a little adventurous, I would also love to see you.

06.01.2022 Whats behind the new name??? A new journey.... combining the old with something new, powerful and exciting xxx Over the last 12 months, I have grown on so many levels... I have healed old Trauma, I have allowed myself to be more me.... and I have shedded layers upon layers. I have a huge passion for helping horses... but I also have a huge passion for helping people, and realistically, with every horse I treat, comes a beautiful person, that I form some form of relationship... with. This next part of my journey, is to combine the Healing of Horse and Owner even more. I have suffered Depression in the past myself... I have suffered Anxiety myself... those voices in your head... yep... have had them too, but slowly I am learning how to deal with those things better... and also learn how closely we actually are connected to our animals... so I am super excited to be able to share this next chapter with you... You have heard me mention this before, but Equine Assisted Kinesiology is a true game changer... By combining Horse and Owner and treating both together, layers upon layers can shift... Competition Anxiety?? Trouble Floating?? Nervous after a Fall?? Or simply wanting a deeper connection with your horse?? This Modality may help?? I still love how I got here.. with the help, advice, encouragement of many many others... Loved ones, colleges and friends, and I simply am just super excited to be able to share this form of healing with you..... What is Kinesiology?? How does it work?? Feel free to message me to find out more xxxx See more

06.01.2022 I know... I know.... what I am about to say may sound a bit odd to some of you... but this picture just makes my heart sing. Why? Because the body is simply amazing. The different responses you will see, happening right in front of your eyes, if you are willing to look. Fascia, nerves, tissue, muscle... This is a beautiful response right here to some bodywork on a horses Intercostal's.... Watching the magic unfold right here and there..... See more

03.01.2022 Gold Coast and surrounds ... I have some Human and Horse Appoitments left for Thursday the 3rd. Please get in touch if you would like your horse spoiled before Christmas. This is the last Goldie run for 2020

02.01.2022 TAIL TELLS If a horse's tail gets caught between his hind legs he is not using his body properly. If the tail lays flat and listless these are clues that energy..., messages and feedback from the brain to the body and back may not be traveling up and down his spine properly. If the tail is clamped down, the horse may be in fear or in pain, closing the hindquarters down. This is something to discuss with your veterinarian. If your horse's tail swishes constantly and more so during transitions, changes, or anytime you make a request, your aids may be too loud or he may be frustrated with the work. A little swishing when asked to do something demanding for a short time is different from constant swishing. We must observe and know our horse to figure out what is concentration and what is upset. The tail reflects the health of our horse's spine. As the spine undulates in a slightly serpentine pattern through our horses' body, his tail should carry through this motion. As our horse uses his back and body better and better, as his balance changes and improves, he will use his tail differently. We want to keep an eye on it and note improvements or set backs as they tell us how well the training is progressing or is stalling. We look for a tail that is carried in a soft arch slightly away from the body with the mass of hair rhythmically moving from hock to hock in a pendulum motion. Touching your horse's tail, gently lifting it and rotating it, combing the hair with your fingers, taking segments and gently pulling them in a circular motion while observing your horse will give you feedback about how he feels in his back and body. This should be done easily with no resistance, the tail should have a good weight in your hands and feel alive, not dead. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Stand to the side at first and stay close to the croup. If your horse reflexively clamps down or threatens to kick, do not try to force the issue or become aggressive. Reassure your horse with a neutral touch and your voice. If the problem persist, contact your health care pro, do not insist as you and your horse may get hurt. UPDATE: 1: About the crooked tail We had shared this explanation from Equinology a few years back which matches Manolo’s understanding: There are numerous reasons for a tail held to one side. A spinal misalignment, an injury, restrictions to any of the soft tissues, a reproductive concern or a lame limb can be one of the many issues. If a horse is not bearing equal weight on a limb in a unilateral (one sided) issue the horse tends to rest that limb. In resting that limb it swings the pelvis forward and points the sacral (croup) and caudal (tail) bones towards that limb. Try it for yourself. Put your hands behind your back; hold your hands against your spine in an upside down prayer fashion. Now, lift your heel to offload your leg so your pelvis of that side moves forward and you will see that your fingers point to that leg. It doesn’t take long for this adaptation of posture to show up and begin compensatory issues. Some of the other muscles that you need to consider are two of the hamstrings; the semimembranosus and the semitendinosus. Horses are a bit different than us and have attachments to the spine; with 2 strong attachments to the first two tail bones. If one of these hamstrings are tight and when they are in this shortened state, they will incline those bones to the restricted side. Voila, crooked tail." FOR THE REST OF THE ARTICLE AND MORE ADVICE on how to massage the hamstrings and help release and straighten the tail, please read the detailed and extremely well illustrated attached pdf from Debranne Patillo and Equinology, Inc. http://www.manolomendezdressage.com//Equinology-Hamstring- Thank you for your generosity Debranne in sharing educational knowledge with us at a moments notice and with the equestrian community worldwide. UPDATE 2: We read a very insightful post from one reader we wanted to share relating to the potential relationship between a harder tail grooming and washing experience and possible surrounding muscle soreness: Fran Welsby wrote: " Hi, do you find how a horse accepts their tail being washed also gives you clues? We shampoo, condition then use a de-tangle spray thru the tail then using our fingers carefully separate out the hairs from the roots to the ends. I have found that the ponies that relax, give me their tails to do all this generally fall asleep while I work, those that don't often will be the ones with some haunch/ham string issues." An interesting observation. For a lot of information about horses tails, we also recommend you check Kentucky Equine Research's Equinews resource.
