23.01.2022 A Mite-y Eye Problem! If you have been listening to the radio recently you mite have heard one of our Optometrists, Jake Hansen talking about a mite-y problem! It’s unnerving to imagine things living on our bodies, but the reality is that we all have mites that live on our skin. One species of skin mites called ‘Dermodex’ mites, live inside the follicle of our eye lashes. Normally we are completely unaware of their presence but some people, particularly the elderly or p...eople with some skin conditions such as rosacea, can have an infestation of these mites. Symptoms and signs of Dermodex infestation can mimic mild to moderate dry eye syndrome. People may experience crusting around the base of the eyelashes, red eyelid margins and burning or irritated eyes. Treatment for Dermodex involves in-office eyelid treatments to remove accumulated eyelid debris and the daily use of medicated eyelid wipes to eradicate the mites. If you want to know more or suspect you may have a Dermodex problem, then book an appointment to speak to one of our optometrists. The following protocols have recently been implemented within our practice: Car Service for spectacle adjustments or repairs, contact/spectacle/deliveries Postage for contact lenses/spectacle orders... Payments can now be made over the phone via Eftpos Disinfecting of all display frames and equipment after any patient/staff contact Disinfecting all chairs/surfaces within the practice after patient/staff contact Medicare and Healthcare cards are not to be handled by staff directly (for the consideration of both staff and patients) A designated consultation day for elderly or less mobile patients To minimise exposure, or in the event of forced closure, we strongly encourage all patients to collect their contact lenses and spectacles once you have received notification of their completion. The club has recently undertaken their annual competition, where hundreds of participants from around Australia gather to compete. Here are some tips to help reduce this likelihood: Encourage moderation in near vision screen time. (see recommendations on age related screen time) Studies show that children who spend more than 2 hours a day on screens, and less than 1 hours outdoors, are more likely to become sho...rt-sighted. Consider reducing your own screen time as an example to your children. Ensure Good Working Distance. Your child’s posture and working distance are so important as they grow, and device should be no closer than the distance from their nose to their elbow. Never read lying on your stomach, as the viewing distance will be much closer. Excessive, extremely close smartphone use can cause severe eye coordination problems.
