24.01.2022 Most times the simple things are what makes us happy. There is that feeling of comfort and settlement when sitting quietly by a fire in the heart of Winter. The warmth soaks through your body, caressing like a Nanna’s special touch. What could be a better place than to spend a couple of nights in the cosy Cabin of Happy Go Lucky Hideout? When you spend a couple of days at the Hideout you can immerse yourself in the History of the 1800’s gold rush. Located on the site of ...the, now long abandoned town of Pearson and a leisurely 10 to 15 minute walk into Walhalla. Feel a little of what it would have been like living on the gold fields, among the rock, mud and the plethora of little mines dotted throughout the area. If its all the modern conveniences you want, like Television, traffic, wifi or computer screens, then go to the City. If you want peace, quiet and getting back to simplicity, reconnecting with friends or family, getting in touch with nature, come and stay! Happy Go Lucky Hideout is a simple cabin completely off the grid, yet able to cater for your basic requirements with limited power, hot water, lighting, cooking & heating facilities. The upstairs bedrooms are cosy and warm for a good night sleep. Sit on the deck in the quiet misty morning with a cup of tea and contemplate the beauty of nature. for bookings go to https://www.riparide.com/listin/3011-happy-go-lucky-hideout See more

16.01.2022 The Anderson Mines of Aberfeldy. 71 pages covering the mines in and around the Kitty Cane area of Aberfeldy. Go to www.adventurermaps.com.au for all purchases. ...Only $22.95 inc. postage. PLEASE SHARE THIS POST Key features (see pics attached) - detailed maps showing mines, workings, hut sites, tramways, pack tracks, battery sites, etc -original old 1800s to early 1900s photos and recent photos of what is there today -history of area -detailed reports and descriptions of sites visited -mines mapped in detail -many old original surveys, maps and reports -rare finds and so much more Many authors publish books by just researching. I, together with the valuable help from the Aberfeldy Track Historic Touring Route maintained by West Gippsland Inc. members, have published this book by both researching and going out in the field to find the historical sites and mines, this is why is takes many years to put together. In fact I started it 20 years ago. There is nothing like this series of publications out there, and I hope you take pleasure in reading them, as much as I had compiling them. 11.01.2022 "Walhalla and Surroundings: (By ‘Oaks’ in the ‘Mercury’) Probably the most crooked railway in the Commonwealth, and also New Zealand, is the narrow gauge from M...oe to Walhalla, and a desire on the part of the writer, of long standing, to see the mining town among the hills, was gratified lately, and having seen something of the railways in Tasmania and New Zealand, I consider the one to Walhalla beats them all for windings. The journey from Moe to Moondarra is devoid of interest, as the line with the exception of a patch at the Latrobe River, passes through some very poor country. At Moondarra the land is better, and much the same at Harris, the latter named no doubt after the late member of Parliament. Harris presents the greatest pretensions of any station on the line between Moe and Walhalla, and it is from here, if anywhere any addition will be made to the line. Up to Harris the line has been easy of construction, and no engineering difficulties presented themselves, but from here to Walhalla, a distance of nearly 8 miles, the real trouble commences and, in consequence, the most interesting part to the railway traveller. Harris is the highest point on the line and from there to Thomson, a distance of 4 miles, the difference is 600’, and it was along this stretch that the trouble in land slips occurred last winter. From Thomson to Walhalla formation is entirely different, and the track for the line has been hewn out of the solid rock, the sides of which in places as perpendicular as the walls of a house. The speed limit in places on the descent into the Thomson Valley is ten miles per hour, which speaks for itself as to the nature of the country the line passes through. Walhalla at last, and after a rest and refreshments... a desire to make the most of time... [and explore the town]" - Walhalla Chronicle, January 1913.
