17.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... KP mangoes from Katherine have started. Katherine has not experienced the rainfall that Darwin has. As a result the mangoes are looking great, however the Darwin KP’s are eating magnificently and that’s what I’ll be taking home this week. The Darwin fruit is showing the effects of some serious volumes of rain and a very windy season but the mangoes eat as sweet as honey, and are a real treat. Look past the superficial m...arkings and rough appearance and enjoy these Darwin mangoes. Our trays sale are Darwin fruit and great value at $20.00 a tray. I must stress that Darwin mangoes must be eaten within a few days of purchase. There are some good things happening with melons in the markets this week. Rockmelons are into some of the better eating varieties with plenty of value in the smaller sizes. Orange candy melon is a new melon variety grown in North Queensland. It has a bright yellow shinny smooth skin which indicates fruit maturity. It is a relatively short season from October to December. This particular melon is best eaten when flesh is firm and crisp, not soft. Orange candy melon is a very refreshing fruit sweet fruit and the perfect palate cleanser make sure to give it a try this weekend! Plenty of fabulous opportunities in the veg markets this week! Red washed potatoes from South Australia will make a great addition to your shopping basket week. On special in all stores, Red washed potatoes are a flavoursome and versatile potato. They are delish as a mash, when roasted as chips or as part of the most magnificent creamy gnocchi you’ll likely ever eat! There is an abundance of new crop Sydney basin Lebanese cucumbers in the markets. This week, we are also promoting telegraph cukes. From South Australia, they are in abundance this week! In fact, they are at prices we only see a a few times a year. A low acidity sweet cucumber, telegraph cukes are great eating and a great price. In tomatoes, the standout this week is the medley snacking tom mix. Truss toms and asparagus are still in good supply and excellent quality. - David Harris See more

16.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is Shallots! Shallots are a wonderful vegetable that add flavour to many dishes. Their popularity has never waned in the fifty years I have been in the business. They are rarely available at our special HFM price this week. High in vitamin C and at this price, you can put a bunch away for next week too! David Harris HOW TO PICK... The upper end of the scallion should be dark green with no sign of yellowing. They should be straight and crisp; curled, soft shoots are a sign of age. HOW TO STORE Preventing moisture loss is the key to storing scallions. Wrap them in damp paper towels or reusable plastic bags to keep them fresh and crisp. See more

15.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is... Asparagus! This will probably be the bargain week of the season. The asparagus is at it's absolute best from both a price and quality perspective. Standard size bunches, baby asparagus and Grande, it just doesn’t get any better. Enjoy! David Harris HOW TO PICK... Look for bright spears with compact tips. Avoid any that look limp or discoloured. When you snap freshly harvested asparagus, it should be crisp, moist and juicy. HOW TO STORE If not eating straight away, wrap it in a damp tea towel, pop in a plastic bag and store in the crisper compartment of your fridge. To keep asparagus fresh for longer, trim the ends and stand in a glass with 1-2cm of water. Loosely cover with a plastic bag and store in fridge. See more

15.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is... Beanettes! My product of the week is beanettes. At the moment, we only sell these in a tray, and they are by far the best bean we sell. At this time of the year, the very best beanettes in store are grown for us by the Mitchison family from the Manning river near Taree. Beanette is a made-up name now used to describe any baby beans which are of the smaller varieties of green beans. So, it comes down to the indiv...idual grower as to what beanettes you actually get. The bean our grower has was originally imported from the USA but bred in Holland and is such an extraordinary product that when they are available, they are the only bean I take home. They are not cheap but a four-dollar packet will feed three or possibly four people so at a dollar a head per serve, these are great value and a great product. There is only one grower of this product and that farmer currently has stock. However, some weeks we will run out, particularly on the weekend but we won’t substitute these for a lesser product whilst they are in season and available. David Harris HOW TO PICK Pick the beans with a vibrant bright green colour, avoid darker looking beans and beans with blemishes or large swollen pods. Fresh beans of good quality should be slim and crisp, and should snap when broken. HOW TO STORE Store unwashed, in a plastic bag in the fridge or crisper, and use within 4 days. See more

11.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is... Basil! A fabulous herb that is annual; there are many different varieties, the green being the most common. Basil loves warmer weather to grow and so becomes plentiful in late spring and early summer. An absolute essential in Italian cooking! Best results come from adding the herb towards the end of the cooking process. Basil is on special at all Harris Farm stores this week. - David Harris HOW TO PICK... When buying fresh basil, look for bright green leaves that are not browning or dried on the edges. HOW TO STORE Pick the leaves off the stems and lay them in a single layer on paper towel. Roll up the towel around the leaves and put the roll in a plastic bag. This method keeps the leaves hydrated but not wet or damp. See more

10.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... What a great week to get into the kitchen and cook up a storm. With showers forecast for the rest of the week, and an abundance of locally grown vegies at hand, this is a great time to roast, steam or stir-fry through some of this unseasonably wet weather. Shallots are my pick of the week and big harvests of fresh, locally grown bunches are ideal right now to make any meal come together. Dutch carrots and rhubarb, also ...grown a stone’s throw from Sydney, are both at their very best right now think honey glazed sesame carrots and rhubarb apple crumble. With the Queensland eggplant season finishing up now, this is an ideal time to jump on some Imperfect eggplant! Lebanese, telegraph and sweet baby cucumbers are all at their very best flavour and price this week. Iceberg lettuce, still from as far north as the Lockyer Valley in SE Queensland down to Robinvale in VIC and everywhere in between, is absolutely flooding into Sydney right now. The right balance of rainfall and sunshine has ensured excellent supply for the rest of this week. This is a great week to grab a bunch of tender stem baby broccoli the quality is great. South Australian red potatoes remain an excellent all-rounder this week; priced to sell and superb quality my pick of the spuds. What a week for avocadoes large, small or Imperfect. However you like them, this is a great week to pick up on some inexpensive Hass avocadoes. We welcome the start of the Katherine mango season right now. Just a short three hour drive South East of Darwin, these are the Kensington prides that look magnificent in the fruit bowl for longer than just a few days. R2E2 mangoes out of Katherine, for something a little different also hitting the shelves this week. Supply of raspberries and blueberries continues to be very good. This is the time of year when we see an improvement in the consistent supply of good quality bananas. The best eating tomato this week are our snacking petite punnets. Rockmelons are also fantastic at the moment vibrant, sweet, cheap. David Harris Tap the image to have Dave’s Market Update Box delivered to your doorstep! See more

09.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is Orange Candy Melon! It's not often that I recommend new varieties of fruit but today there is one I would like you to try - Orange Candy melon. For years, the sweetest melon we grew and enjoyed were honeydews. We only ate them in season, and they were typically only sold in areas where there were lots of European migrants who understood them. They were picked ripe and were delicious. Sadly, the major retailers pushed ...to have the season extended and insisted that shelf life was more important than flavour. So, we lost the flavour in honeydews, very similar to what happened years ago with tomatoes. - David Harris The family growing these melons are arguably the premier melon growers in north Queensland and they are determined not to sacrifice flavour on these melons. The result is a fantastic eating product. It will only be grown in season and picked when its mature. We, the public, are the winners here! Orange Candy melon is on special in Harris farm stores this week. HOW TO PICK Look for melons with bright sunny yellow skin. Avoid any that have dull white skin. When Orange Candy Melon is cut, it should be juicy, crisp and sweet. HOW TO STORE Store uncut melon at room temperature. Once cut, store covered in the fridge for 2-3 days. See more

08.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is... Blackberries! My pick this week is blackberries. Just a few years ago we only had the traditional wild varieties and the season was 4 or 5 short weeks late January to early March. Forward to today and we have fabulous sweet ,juicy plump varieties nearly twelve months of the year and blackberries are now around twenty five percent of our berry category. Many of the commercial farms now have thornless varieties which... makes the harvest far less problematic. They become more popular every year and sales will soon equal strawberry sales! They are really plentiful this week, so make sure to look for a bargain in your local HFM store. David Harris HOW TO PICK: Look for plump, firm, fully black berries. HOW TO STORE: To store blackberries, put them in a shallow container and place them in a cool spot or in the refrigerator as soon as you can after picking. Fresh blackberries are very perishable and should be eaten or frozen with two or three days of picking. Blackberries freeze well, and frozen berries can be used for making ice creams, sherbets, pies or dessert sauces. To freeze them, just arrange them in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for an hour or two, then pour the frozen berries into a large container. Frozen, they'll keep for as long as 10 months. See more

06.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... We are now in full swing with Valencia oranges, which are picked fresh and sent to market. Any navels you may come across now will be stored fruit, they may be good or they may not. The Valencia’s of course have lots of seeds, that’s just how they are. Topless pineapples and bananas continue to be very well supplied and inexpensive. Stonefruit is interesting; heavy rains ruined many of the early cherries, however I h...ave seen some very good 2kg boxes in our stores this week. Apricots are the best I have seen for this early in the season. Peaches and nectarines are being heavily promoted by the chain stores but in my view are not quite there yet, look to next week for bigger sweeter fruit. Our grapes are now all Australian however some other retailers still have imported fruit which like me are getting a bit long in the tooth. The apple season is virtually over, a few good pink Ladies still around but its time now to think about grapes, mangoes... Again there is a multitude of fabulous vegetables available this week. All tomatoes are fabulous quality and inexpensive. My pick of the tomatoes this week are the cherry truss; superb flavour and half last week’s price. Mushrooms, Dutch carrots, Rhubarb and zucchini are all still inexpensive again. Baby broccoli, cauliflowers and broccoli are all great bargains this week. The choices are there and the growing conditions remain perfect. Enjoy the feast! David Harris Get Dave’s weekly Market Update box delivered for $60 by clicking the product tag See more

02.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... Great week for tomatoes this week! Those delicious little snacking tomatoes are now in their spring flush, so great flavour and great prices. The more traditional truss tomatoes are also very good value. All our stores have a very attractive and well priced special with new season brushed potatoes this week. Mushrooms, Dutch carrots and rhubarb are all well supplied and continue to be cheap. Iceberg lettuce and beet...root, both loose and bunched, are real value. Chinese cabbage has eased a little more and can be a tasty addition to almost any meal. It’s also a great week for bananas at Harris Farm this week. Quality and price are both great and this is always a good time of year for bananas, with the weather not too hot and not too cold in the growing areas. It’s a bit tricky with berries as we are in between growing between areas on raspberries and strawberries. Both are a bit weather affected this week and so I would recommend blackberries as the pick of the berries this week. Navel oranges are coming to an end and imported fruit is not very good yet so it’s Aussie summer Valencia’s for me for the near future. We have some very good eating and well-priced rockmelons in our stores this week and large topless pines are also really good value. The mango quality is improving as we source most of our fruit from Katherine not Darwin which has had heavy rain recently. - David Harris Purchase Dave’s weekly market update box by clicking the product tag now!

01.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... ‘We have an abundance of fabulous tomatoes this week, especially truss, Tomberry tomatoes and yellow snacking tomatoes. The hot weather has led to lower prices especially in the cauliflower, zucchini and broccoli categories. Beans, beanettes, leeks and rhubarb are all easing as well. Mushrooms and rhubarb continues to be very good value and we are enjoying a decent price fall in corn. Berries and mangoes continue to b...e a little undersupplied. Quality cherries have had a little more rain than is ideal so it may be mid next week before supply returns to normal. Grapes, both red and white are still coming from Queensland. Normally I don’t get too excited about these early Queensland grapes however this year, they are quite a decent product and fairly priced. Australian Valencia oranges, most melons and bananas are all excellent quality and well supplied. The peaches and nectarines available this week are genuinely worth eating and will get better every week. With the hot weather this week, I don’t think you can go past the excellent quality, well priced seedless melon now in store.
