24.01.2022 SAVE THE DATE Year 6 to 7 Transition Day 17th October 2020 8:30 am 12:30 pm Year 6 students who are enrolled at Harrisdale Senior High School in 2021 are invited to attend the transition day.

24.01.2022 We are pleased to report a smooth start to Term 2. Around 65%-70% of students have been on campus for face-to-face lessons, and students who are at home are engaging in online learning and contact with their teachers via Connect and WebEx. This is one of our PE classes about to start their PE lesson and enjoying being outdoors on a sunny autumn day.

23.01.2022 I know the situation around our public schools has been causing angst for parents, teachers, staff and students. I understand that it may be confusing, but we...ve kept them open, consistent with the best medical advice at hand through the National Cabinet process. Today, as the pandemic situation moves forward, we move to the next step. Firstly, from Monday, March 30, we will now encourage parents to keep children at home if they can, and access the online learning resources we have made available. However, all children who do attend public schools will continue to be taught. Where parents need children to attend school to enable them to maintain employment, and for those children in vulnerable families, like children living with grandparents, they are encouraged to continue to attend school. Public schools will remain open from Monday, March 30 to Friday, April 3. In addition, formal classes will now finish at the end of Friday, April 3, one week earlier than planned. Teachers and education assistants will now use this time to plan and prepare for a new way of teaching from the start of Term 2, with work continuing through the school holidays. However, arrangements will be in place in schools to supervise children who need to attend school on the last four days prior to Easter, where parents require it to maintain their employment, or due to a personal situation. It is crucial for us to strike the right balance between keeping the community safe, allowing essential services to continue and provide a quality education to our students in this difficult time. I want to reassure parents that our schools are well prepared to continue to provide education for their children. Thank you to the parents and carers of Western Australian children for their understanding and support for school staff as we navigate our way together through this unprecedented situation. And thank you to our teachers, education assistants and all school staff for the essential work they do across our State. This is an incredibly difficult situation, thank you for your patience, and we will let you know about plans for Term 2 as soon as possible.

22.01.2022 Today, Harrisdale SHS Year 7s and 8s attended a presentation by Officer Jackie Newby of the WA Police force who spoke to students about the ThinkUKnow Australia program and safety online. ThinkUKnow is a law enforcement led education and prevention program that aims to increase young people’s awareness around the dangers of technology and sharing content online. The program provides students with tips and information on online safety, including how to avoid unwanted contact, online grooming, self-generated content, cyberbullying, sexual extortion and how to seek help. The program highlights the importance of privacy and the risks involved with sharing personal information online, promoting a Think before you post mentality.

22.01.2022 Our annual Year 7 Family Welcome BBQ, held last week, was a popular event. Many parents and extended family members took up their child’s invitation of a personally guided tour of the campus as well as the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers. Observing the Year 7 students as tour guides, they appear to have quickly and confidently found their way around the school. The Welcome BBQ provides Year 7 families a wonderfully informal and relaxed opportunity to meet their children’s teachers and to mingle with each other, and is an important part of the students’ transition to high school. This year, our P&C also set up a stall at the BBQ to sell second hand school uniform items, including jackets in time for the cooler months ahead.

11.01.2022 As of Monday 18 May students will revert to the usual arrangements for wearing uniforms. This means students will no longer be allowed to wear their sports uniform all day at school; only those students who have sport or dance Period 1 may wear their sports uniform to school. All other students should be in full school uniform, including black shoes.

11.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ALL WA SCHOOLS - PLEASE SHARE. WA schools have now been back for almost three weeks. Over that time, weve seen a steady increase in attend...ance, with an average of 85.6% of students in attendance at WA public schools yesterday. Id like to thank all of our principals, teachers, school staff, cleaners, gardeners, parents, carers and students for making the return to school such a success so far. At the start of term we opted for a soft opening of WA public schools so parents who felt comfortable with their kids returning could do so but those who had concerns could choose to keep their kids home. At that time, we flagged that WA school arrangements would be reassessed after three weeks. Today Im able to provide an update that will apply to all WA schools going forward. As of next Monday, 18 May, all Western Australian school students will be required to return to school. This decision has the full support of all stakeholders in the education sector, and our health experts. There are exceptions for students who are medically vulnerable or those who have a family member with chronic health issues, who will be assessed and can continue to learn from home and will be supported by their schools and the Department of Education. But from Monday, students who remain away from school without good reason, will no longer be provided with learning packages and their absence will be marked as unauthorised. Based on health advice, students in residential facilities will be now permitted to return home at weekends, at the discretion of the principal or manager. Through the State Governments $43 million additional investment, strict environmental cleaning throughout the school day, including high-touch surfaces and playground equipment will continue at public schools, as will reinforced hygiene measures. Drop off and pick up arrangements that restrict parents and carers, and non-essential visitors, from entering school grounds remain in place. Individual schools will provide further information to their parents and carers on how each school will manage these changes. At this stage, certain activities such as assemblies, camps and inter-school events remain prohibited. Going forward, any further changes for schools will be considered in line with the WA roadmap for easing COVID-19 restrictions in our State. As always, State Government decisions will be based on the best health advice. Thank you again for your cooperation and understanding as we navigate this together.

The slow-motion video clip captures one of the races in action.

10.01.2022 Yesterday, Harrisdale SHS was honoured to host the Ceremony for the Declaration of Poll for Jandakot in the recent WA Election. The Ceremony was performed by Mr Ken McIntosh, Returning Officer, WA Electoral Commission, in front of Yaz Mubarakai (MLA, Jandakot) and a group of Year 10 Humanities and Social Sciences students. The event provided students a unique opportunity to gain a better grasp of democracy by witnessing an authentic political ritual. Yaz Mubarakai remained to answer students’ questions and observed that, Students that come through Harrisdale Senior High School, in my opinion, are future leaders. Harrisdale’s staff certainly agree with that!

08.01.2022 The global pandemic is having a profound impact on our adolescents with many being forced to miss out on so many rites of passage. Some are becoming more anxious or depressed which is completely understandable given the current situation. However, should your teen display any unusual behaviour that lasts for more than 2-3 weeks, it may be a cause for concern. Research shows there are specific risk factors that increase the likelihood of teenagers developing a mental health pr...oblem. Some are set in stone, whilst others are modifiable. Adolescents are considered to be more at risk of anxiety and depression disorders which may affect their mood, thinking and behaviour. It can impact their ability to function and perform normal activities. It is therefore vitally important for adult carers to remain vigilant during this time for any signs of distress, even though your adolescent may not have any prior history of a mental health disorder. Early intervention, diagnosis and treatment is more important than ever. In the current climate, one useful thing you can do is help your teen focus on the things that they can control such as their learning, diet, exercise and sleep. In this Special Report, adult carers will be provided with a checklist that can be used a guide in determining if there is any cause for concern. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Here is the link to your special report.

06.01.2022 As lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted to varying degrees, we enter a time of transition and adjustment. The circumstances of this situation have significantly impacted us all. For some, it has been an opportunity to reflect on what is important, whilst others have embraced the opportunity to learn new things. Many young people may be excited at the prospect of restrictions being lifted; others may feel mixed emotions. Reactions will differ depending on how well the...y cope with stress and change. Keeping a check on your childs mental health and wellbeing as they adjust to new routines, will be vitally important. There is still a lot of uncertainty ahead of us, so focusing on the things you can control or enjoy doing or even value, can help establish predictability and familiarity for the whole family. Adult carers need to provide young people with reassurance by acknowledging any concerns and fears they may have at this time. Consider this to be a normal reaction, however it may be best to focus more on their feelings and emotions, rather than the practicalities at this stage. In this Special Report, we share a few ideas to help ease this time of transition and adjustment. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
