21.01.2022 If you were watching the MACA Cancer 200 Opening Ceremony this year, you may have watched Steve and Jenny Williams share their touching story. For Day 26 of Gratitude Month, we’d love you to meet Jenny and Steve. This year, the gorgeous couple rode with eight yellow flags on their bikes, each representing a year of riding and thriving. Prostate cancer has been part of their lives since 2010. They’ve experienced a vicious cycle of diagnosis, treatment, healing and then the c...ancer re-emerges and the cycle starts again. It’s tiring and heartbreaking but as Steve has said I can do something, or I can do nothing and that’s why, for the last eight years, Steve and Jenny have been jumping on their blue tandem bike and fundraising for better outcomes and kinder treatments for cancer. Together, this year, the pair raised over $14,000 for WA cancer research at the Perkins. They’re wonderful people, incredible supporters and a source of inspiration for so many at the Perkins, so today we’d like to say a big thank you to Jenny and Steve.

20.01.2022 Today is Day 28 of Gratitude Month, and we'd like you to meet Ruhi Bassari. Ruhi is nothing short of extraordinary. Three years ago, Ruhi had just celebrated her youngest child’s birthday when the unthinkable happened she was diagnosed with cancer. Ruhi was a young mum with three kids under six and described it as the biggest shock of her life. After a fierce battle, Ruhi is now healthy, happy and in remission and for that we are truly grateful. However, there are many peo...ple out there that aren’t as lucky and that’s why Ruhi walks to find a cure, so no one has to experience the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis. Since 2019, Ruhi has been inspired to walk for her kids, but especially for her daughter Harper, in the hopes that she never has to face the challenges her mum has braved. Ruhi’s tenacity and support for cancer research is an inspiration to all of us, and we are thankful to her for everything she’s done for the Perkins. Thank you, Ruhi.

20.01.2022 A major clinical trial involving over 5,000 patients and led by Perkins researchers and GenesisCare cardiologists has found that heart attacks and the need for coronary stenting or bypass surgery is reduced by 30% in patients taking low dose colchicine - an old and widely available drug, commonly used to treat gout. Lead investigators Professor Peter Thompson and Dr Mark Nidorf found that low dose colchicine was safe, well-tolerated, and significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and ischemic stroke in patients with chronic coronary disease. 19.01.2022 It is with the deepest sadness that we share today, on what would have been her 45th birthday, that our beloved Walk for Women's Cancer walker and Promenade Club Ambassador, Kylie Beard, has passed away. Kylie passed on the morning of Monday April 5th, surrounded by her beautiful family and the wonderful staff at Fiona Stanley Hospital. For anyone who was lucky enough to know Kylie, you would know that she was truly exceptional. She was strong, determined, and bravely wore he...r heart on her sleeve. She was a fierce advocate for medical research because as she told us, nothing will change for women like her unless people take medical research seriously. When Perkins staff went to visit Kylie in the hospital recently, she was more determined than ever to make a difference and even as she was fading in and out of consciousness, she made it clear that she still had work for us to carry out. Kylie requested that we continue the fight to fund women's cancer research, keep promoting what we do and why we do it, and to make sure that she is there with us on the day of the Walk. She helped to promote last year's findings that honeybee venom can help break down certain types of breast cancers, and the bee became her symbol of hope. So this year, on every single Promenade Club T-shirt, there will be a honeybee in honour of Kylie, so she can walk alongside all of the amazing walkers. Please join us in sending your love and support to Kylie's family, Allan, Jenny, Natalie and Nicole, and to all of her friends and loved ones in this difficult time. If you would like to donate in Kylie's memory and carry on her incredible legacy, you can donate to her Walk fundraising page at https://bit.ly/31OTcM2

16.01.2022 For Day 30 of Gratitude Month we’d like to share our appreciation for Emma Shand. Emma has been supporting the work of the Perkins for over 20 years in many ways. She’s a donor, a fantastic advocate for medical research in WA and even helped shape the Institute during its formative years. In 1998, Emma’s beloved father suffered a heart attack which left him with severe neurological damage and diminished capacity. Emma and her family cared for him in the family home until he... passed away. The experience ignited an interest in medical research and Emma recognised the need to build a strong and collaborative research environment here in WA. That same year, the Perkins then called the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research was born from a vision to bring medical scientists together to focus on some of the major diseases impacting our community and Emma was asked to join the founding committee. Emma championed medical research in the business community and helped establish multi-year pledges that allowed the Institute to grow into the world-class research hub that it is today. Emma told us Stable, recurring support for medical research in WA is critically important. Foundationally, it’s contributing to the health and quality of life of Western Australians and others beyond. I’d love Western Australia to become synonymous with medical research, much like silicon valley is synonymous with tech. To play even a minuscule part towards helping the Perkins achieve that would be a great honour for anyone. We are sincerely grateful to Emma for her lasting support of the Perkins, and her advocacy for medical research to improve community health for all of us.

10.01.2022 Over the coming weeks, were sharing some of the discoveries that your support has helped to drive. Thanks to you and a team of Perkins researchers, a new hope was discovered for people with McArdles Disease last year. McArdles Disease is a genetic condition that can cause significant pain from activities like walking upstairs, lifting a child or running for the bus. This is caused by a missing enzyme that is needed for muscles to break down sugar for energy during exercis...e. Without this enzyme, the sugar sits in pockets within the muscle, resulting in painful cramps and extensive muscle damage. Thanks to your support, Dr Rhonda Taylor and a Perkins team have a way to deliver a healthy copy of the missing enzyme to help the muscle access and break down the sugar they need offering hope for a gene therapy treatment for patients in the future. We are so grateful for your continued support of this life-changing research. To read the full story, visit https://bit.ly/3hQGGSb
