18.01.2022 Wolly presented to HVV this week after being acutely lethargic and jaundice (he had yellow gums, skin, urine and faeces). Wolly was diagnosed with immune mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA). This is a condition where Wolly's immune system has started to attack his own red blood cells. The breakdown of the red blood cells is what has caused him to become yellow and the reduced amount of red blood cells caused his lethargy. Wolly was hospitalised and started on steroids, ho...wever his red blood cell level had dropped dangerously low. This is where our hero of story Zane the Husky flew in. Zane is a full time hero and a sledding dog in his spare time. Zane's sidekick humans generously brought him in to donate blood to help out Wolly. We can't thank Zane enough for his donation. This morning Wolly is much happier and back to his barky self! We are hoping to discharge Wolly tomorrow and wish him a speedy and smooth recovery! If you'd like to let your dog achieve superhero blood donor status please contact the clinic to join our donor list.

18.01.2022 We are desperate for newspapers again, if you have any laying around please feel free to drop them in to the clinic! Thank you

16.01.2022 Hi there, We are Blue Bow kitten (BB1) and Black Bow kitten (BB2). That is what the girls call us at the clinic anyway. We wouldnt mind if you changed our names. ... We are around the 12 week old mark. We dont really like to specify how old we are, because who really likes to admit their age? We absolutely LOVE cuddles though, which make us very smoochy and adorable (even if we do say so ourselves). If you think one of us or even both of us could be seen as a part of your fur family, then please speak to the girls at Hartley vet on 63552272, or better yet, pop your head in to meet us and have a chat all in one. Kind regards, BB1 and BB2

14.01.2022 We are very excited to introduce our newest team member! Nurse Mikayla welcomed little Dawson into the world on 8th October, and is already counting down the days until he can join the team and help with all your animal needs

13.01.2022 Robbie is a Jack Russell that presented to our Oberon Clinic on Monday after he was noticed to be struggling to breathe and coughing up blood. It was quickly determined that Robbie had ingested rat bait which stops blood from clotting and causes spontaneous bleeding. Robbie was treated with vitamin K to help his blood clot again. Despite supportive care and vitamin K, he still looked every flat and lethargic. Thats where Dr Lester the cattle dog cross came in to save the day... to donate blood for a transfusion for Robbie. Robbie has been gradually improving each day and was discharged this afternoon. He is pictured here with Dr Helen and his blood brother, Dr Lester. Cases like these are an important reminder to be vigilant with rat bait. Baits may still be present on properties from previous owners even if you havent placed any personally. If you think your pet has ingested rat bait please contact the clinic immediately.

09.01.2022 How long is a piece of string!? Well for Banjo, its about 2.4m long. Banjo presented to HVV late on Monday afternoon after his owner noticed a large amount of string hanging from his bottom! He had had one vomit but had otherwise been normal. In consult Dr Mon noticed string was also present in his mouth, wrapped under his tongue to be precise. This is a very common spot for cats to have an especially dangerous type of foreign body anchor: The linear foreign body. ... Banjo was immediately admitted into hospital for imaging and surgery. He was anaesthetised and the string around the base of his tongue was cut to allow us to remove it lower down. On opening up his abdomen his intestines were in great condition. A real risk of this type of foreign body is multiple gut perforations which could result in deadly peritonitis. Thankfully for Banjo, he had presented early and just needed assistance removing the string. Dr Mon and Dr Madie worked together to remove the string and sow him back up, finishing at the early time of 9pm. Banjo has headed home and is now recuperating and we wish him the best with his recovery. This is a good reminder for everyone that cats will often eat very silly things! Keep all objects such as string packed away where your cats cannot get access to them.

02.01.2022 Baby, its cold outside! Top tips for pet owners this winter. Winter Coats: Although many cat and dog breeds have luxurious thick fur to keep them warm, when they are outside or on walks in the cold, they will still likely benefit from an additional winter coat. This is especially important if you have a thin, older or short haired breed.... A good pet-coat or jumper will give coverage from the neck to the base of the tail while also giving protection to their belly. Make sure your pets coat is the right fit and isnt restricting movement. Remember, dont leave your pets coat on once they are in a heated indoor environment as they may over-heat under all those layers! Better bedding: As the weather gets cooler, you might notice your pet is spending more time snuggled up in their bed. You can make a few simple adjustments to their bedding to ensure they are properly protected from the cold. Make sure your pets bed is away from drafts and elevated off cold, hard surfaces. You should raise the bed off the ground and add an extra blanket for warmth and comfort. Try not to place the bed too high though, as cold temperatures are especially tough on older dogs or cats with stiff joints who may have difficulty in movement after long periods of rest. The great indoors: If your pet spends a lot of time outside, then appropriate shelter is essential. Choose a spot for your pets housing that is protected from the elements in a warm elevated position. Fill your pets shelter with dry blankets that are washed regularly. If your dog is usually kept outside, you could bring them indoors to sleep at night, somewhere warm and dry, away from cold drafts and damp. Keep on moving: The temptation in winter is to stay indoors, safely snuggled under a warm blanket. But your dog or cat still needs exercise and boredom busting stimulation. Keep playing indoors with soft toys or a ball to get the blood moving. Or, brave the cold, grab the lead, put on both your winter coats, and head out for a brisk walk together! Your dog will still love the joy of their walk even if its a bit colder, and you will feel better for the exercise too. Heat seekers: Cats are notorious for finding warm spots around the house, like the afternoon sun through a window, or sitting close to heaters. Dogs too will seek out sources of heat during colder weather. Be wary of your pet sitting too close to heaters or fires as they can fall asleep and end up with dried out skin or worse, burns. Heart warmers: Pets are wonderful companions and loving members of the family. Snuggle up and stay warm together this winter, and remember, theres nothing like lots of cuddles to keep the winter blues at bay!
