11.01.2022 SOME DELIGHTFUL THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT MAY GIBBS Did you know that May Gibbs formative years were spent in Western Australia? As a young girl May lived o...n Harvey River Station (near Bunbury) in an old convict-built homestead. Here she had "exciting encounters" with the snakes that infested the cool river banks, flowers, strange birds, insects and wildlife. She also owned a "little fat red pony" and spent days "camping and tramping" out in the hills with her brother Bertie. He would "shoot, pluck and roast the lunch", while May would set about the "more serious business of gathering flowers and information about the affairs of the bush." The family then moved by coach (and four horses) to South Perth by the Swan River. The Gibb's home 'The Dune' was on the corner of Harper Terrace and Suburban Road (now Mill Point Road). May won her first Art prize at the Perth Wild Flower Show at just aged 15. According to the newspaper at the time it was "a charming and artistic reproduction of flowers of a corn-flower blue colour" and purchased by His Excellency the Governor. When May "grew up a little" she returned to her birthplace England, to study art and the "intricacies of the pen". While she loved London, every time she returned to Australia, she realised what a "fantastic, richly original, delightfully reckless" place it was. Australia was in her blood - "If you scratch me, a strong scent of eucalyptus will fill the air." (Cecilia May Gibbs 1877 - 1969) May eventually "eloped" to Sydney aged 36, where she was quickly adopted as a "Sydney Artist". It was here that she created the Gum Nut Babies - so delicate, so exquisite, so original and uniquely Australian - inspired by the Blue Mountains and her childhood years in the bush. May lived in Neutral Bay with her "Irish husband, a pianola, a gramophone and two little black Scotch dogs". Her cottage had a "bright blue front door, shutters and windows full of Sydney Harbour". May loves included "blue and white china, Charlie Chaplin, music, sweet peas, animals, water and cottage furniture. Heysen's, Vermeer's and babies. Her few hates were "cages, oysters, Oxford pants, opera, 'going out', spelling and darning". Although she had no children of her own, May was of the opinion that Australia children were like no other in the world. "A distinct type, possessed of great ingenuity, brighter, more intelligent, independent and able to speak and think for themselves." The State Library of WA is delighted to invite you, your family and friends to the May Gibbs' Gumnut Babies Exhibition. Now on until 1 November. The exhibition is presented at the State Library of Western Australia in partnership with the 2020 AWESOME Festival and the West Australian Ballet. FREE ENTRY. 04.01.2022 Ford House at Bridgetown. What a beautiful morning, wandering around the grounds at Ford House, Bridgetown. This is a bed and breakfast with a whole lot more, ...set just near the bridge on the Blackwood River. The old home here was built in 1896. When you arrive at the property, you walk through the loveliest collection of goods to purchase. There is also a large function room that was once the old barn, now so rustic and inviting. The environment is just charming. All around you are treats and gifts to purchase. Owner Jenny and staff serve refreshments here. You can book accomodation in the old home, with rooms such as the Grand Ballroom, which was locked up for around 20 years, now open for guests to stay. With the sun shining through the trees, making for the most relaxing location, I had to take some photos. In this bush setting, you could easily imagine yourself back in time staying in one of these rooms. Ford House was once accomodation for Railway workers in the early 1900's. John Blechynden originally purchased this land in 1857. He built a gentlemans one room hut in 1860 using bricks made from clay on the river . John married Elizabeth Green in the same year and they moved into the hut. On August 26, 1896, Lucille Jane Walter (nee Thompson of Brookhampton) and William Ardagh Gardner (WAG) Walter bought half the land (5acres) for 200, from John William Blechynden. WAG Walter and his wife came from Kalgoorlie. (WAG was born in 1860 in Galmington, Taunton, Somerset, to Octavius Ardagh Gardiner Walter, one of the owners of the London Times. WAG became the first Mining Warden for Murchison, in Kalgoorlie & Cue, having previous experience in England. He remained in Kalgoorlie for 5 years, mostly living in a tent, and was very concerned about the lawlessness in the town due to the inbalance of males to females. When he put up posters in Kalgoorlie threatening to publicly castrate rapists, he was politely asked to move on. Having a brother already in Bridgetown, WAG Walter moved here as the Mining Registrar and Magistrate during the tin boom in Greenbushes in 1898.The Walters built Ford House in 1896, named after his fathers house, Ford House in Wellington, Somerset, England, near Taunton. WAG used his father’s house plans. Ford House was awarded the best B&B in WA in July 2001. It also won the Hospitality Industry and Best S.W Small Business less than 5 Employees Awards in April 2002 and runners up for Best B&B in WA in 2002, and it's easy to see why. While here, you will meet up with the geese of Ford House. These geese wander freely around the grounds. They awoke and toddled down to the cool shade of the trees near the river, crunching on the fresh chestnuts that fall from the trees this time of year. Thank you for the hospitality and friendly greetings here at Ford House. We will definitely be back for a stay! (Quoted sections of this history of Ford House come courtesy of their website. You can view the comprehensive history here:) http://fordhouse.com.au/about-us/history-of-ford-house/ (Please see the website for booking.) For information on how to book and opening times please see also their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/fordhousewagwalters/

01.01.2022 Leesa Sutherland took a drive out to Wellington Dam this afternoon to see the beginning of the biggest dam mural in the world. The mural is being created by Queensland artist Guido van Helten and will tell the stories of local people and their connection to the Collie area. I believe it will take about one month to complete.
