21.01.2022 NATUROPATHIC HERBAL BLENDS launching tomorrow at 11.11am 10 therapeutic teas, hand blended with love

20.01.2022 The breakdown and absorption of food is a very complex set of processes. The moment you take that first bite of food to the time you pass a bowel motion; your digestive system is working hard to extract a range of nutrients out of your food. The stomach secretes a very strong acid known as hydrochloric acid (HCl). It does this for several reasons such as: To digest your protein HCl initiates protein digestion by converting a substance called pepsinogen into the enzyme pepsi...n. Pepsin is responsible for breaking apart our protein into smaller molecules. Without adequate HCl, undigested larger protein molecules get absorbed into the systemic circulation which can trigger food sensitivities and intolerances. To protect us from pathogens HCl plays a big role in maintaining a sterile environment in the stomach. It neutralises ingested pathogens (bad guys) to act as a barrier, preventing bacterial and fungal overgrowths of the small intestine To assist with carbohydrate & fat digestion HCl also supports the digestion of carbohydrates, fats and vitamins A & E, by stimulating the release of pancreatic enzymes and bile into the small intestine. To support vitamin & mineral absorption The bioavailability, absorption and release of vitamins and minerals such as folic acid, zinc, beta-carotene and iron, are all enhanced with HCl secretion. Signs and symptoms of low stomach acid include; indigestion, heartburn, reflux, low appetite, bloating, nausea, burping, flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea, undigested food in your stool and food sensitivities. You can help improve natural secretion of HCL and reduce your symptoms by; Taking bitter herbs or fermented foods before meals to stimulate the secretion of saliva in the mouth and HCl in the stomach. More effective if taken before meals as they get your digestive system ready for food Avoid drinking beverages with meals to avoid diluting HCl concentrations Zinc supplementation, as research has shown low levels can dramatically impact on stomach acid production Supplementing with Betaine Hydrochloride and pepsin to help restore normal gastric acidity and support your digestive function

19.01.2022 The human gut (everything from the mouth to the anus), is a complex system that is interconnected and has an enormous impact on our whole body. It contributes by supporting the immune system, improving mood and healthy sleeping patterns, and most importantly, effective digestion and elimination of toxic waste. Not only does it have the ability to extract a range of nutrients from our food, but it can also produce essential hormones and neurotransmitters, vital for optimal bod...ily functions. The role of the microbiome is also very important, and getting it into a right balance is essential, as these bacteria can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on our entire health. Naturopathically, we look at how we are chewing our food, how our stomach is beginning to digest the food, how our small intestines are absorbing nutrients and how efficient our bowel is at excreting the remains.

16.01.2022 Personally, my health is one of the most important things I value in my life. When sick, you unfortunately realise the importance of health. It’s a shame that for most people, that’s what it comes to. Health in so many ways, brings better quality of life which in turn creates positive energy, happiness and longevity. Naturopathically, we look at health in a holistic way. Every aspect of health (physical, emotional, social & spiritual) affects the other. There needs to be a he...althy balance between all aspects in order to have a greater chance at achieving optimal health. Investing time and energy into your health is a great example of self love. It may very well be the most profitable investment you will ever make. The worst thing you can do that will self-sabotage the ‘future’ you, is continuing to do the same thing and assuming that you will automatically improve and advance to where you wish to be. That is definitely wishful thinking. No improvement in our lives will happen automatically without us working on them. If we want to get better then we have to work on it. And no one is exempt from this fact.

15.01.2022 I R I D O L O G Y Iridology is an examination of the colour and structure of the iris, the sclera and the pupil. The iris is the most complex external structure of the human body. It has a connection to every organ and tissue of the body via the nervous system. Through the optic nerves, which are attached to the eyes, visual information is sent to the brain. At the same time there is information sent back to the eyes from the brain about the state of the organs and tissues ...in your body. There are no two irises exactly alike. In fact, each iris is as individual as your fingerprint. The colour and pattern of the iris fibres will determine underlying inherent weakness, which may or may not be activated according to diet, environment and psycho-social factors. This amazing naturopathic tool, can be used to determine potential health problems at the earliest stage. This enables an opportunity to prevent illness and maintain optimum wellness. Assessing the colour and fibre structure variations, it can help naturopaths/iridologists, to determine the constitutional strength of the physical body, as well as aspects of personality and emotional wellness. Hippocrates the ‘Father of Medicine’ made the statement Behold the eyes, behold the body. So right you were!!

13.01.2022 Following on from the previous educational post on LOW digestive acid, this post is focussing on the issues surrounding HIGH digestive acid production. As explained, hydrochloric acid (HCl) is essential for optimal digestion and the assimilation of nutrients and minerals obtained via the diet. It plays a role in breaking up these important nutrients and allowing for easier absorption into the systemic circulation. The stomach has a limit to how much acid it can handle at any ...given time. Acid reflux occurs when the circular ring of muscle connecting the stomach and the oesophagus does not close properly, causing acid to flow freely from the stomach up through the throat. This causes irritation of the oesophagus lining and over time can be the cause to many other significant gastrointestinal disorders. Too much acid in the stomach can be an uncomfortable reaction to particular foods, a result of poor dietary habits or a symptom of a more serious problem. Paying attention to what is going into your meals and the acidity of foods is a positive way to ensure acid intake isn't too high. Foods that can exacerbate stomach acid and encourage acid reflux are; coffee, carbonated beverages, chocolate, grapefruit and orange, tomatoes, alcohol and fried foods. Eating before bedtime, wearing tight clothing and lifestyle choices such as smoking and alcohol consumption, can also play a big role in creating too much acid production. Signs of high digestive acid include; heartburn, indigestion, stomach cramps, unpleasant sour taste in the mouth, bloating, nausea and a hoarse voice. If you begin to experience or are experiencing any of the uncomfortable symptoms, check in with a naturopath who will be able to determine why this is happening to you, as every case is different. They would be able to advise you on dietary/lifestyle changes or prescribe natural remedies that can help. Some helpful tips are; maintaining a healthy weight, eating small, frequent meals, watching your posture while eating (stay upright) and avoiding trigger foods. Including acid-neutralising foods such as oats, bananas, yogurt, melons (to dilute the acid) and green vegetables.

13.01.2022 As 2020 comes to an end, I’m spending my time reflecting on the year that was (I do this every year, quite therapeutic actually) Undoubtedly, this year was by far a strange one. From a global pandemic, remote learning, lockdown after lockdown, I’m just thankful to come out of it.. alive and well. So many people have been affected in many different ways - such as physically, mentally and socially. It will take some time to recover and get things back to what we considered ‘no...rmal’, if there is such thing anymore. For me personally, I expected myself to crash down mentally, but surprisingly I was focused, resilient and somewhat strong. I stirred any anxieties I had another way and used it to productively started my dream business, Harvesting Health Naturopathic Herbal Blends. I am absolutely so proud of what I’ve achieved within the last 6 months, and never would I have thought I’d be where I am right now. Lockdown allowed me to completely focus my energy (and time) on what needed to be done without external distractions. It was a blessing in disguise. I’m looking forward to the year ahead, with bigger and brighter goals than 2020. I have proven to myself that no matter what obstacles come my way, I can achieve anything with perseverance, dedication and a love for what I do. BRING ON 2021! To good health, happiness and most importantly, love

11.01.2022 The mind and gut axis is the relationship between the gastrointestinal tract and brain function and development. Our digestive tracts are all lined with a network of neurons called the enteric nervous system, sometimes known as the second brain. It communicates with the brain via specialised nerves; in particular the vagus nerve and prevertebral ganglia. The vagus nerve is responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, such as digestion, heart rate and respirator...y rate. Many of the major neurotransmitter communication molecules that are active in the brain are also active in the gut. 90% of serotonin (feel good hormone), dopamine and glutamate are found in the gut! The gut is also filled with millions of microbes that produce substances which communicate with the brain and the immune system, and are thought to play a role in how we feel mentally. Certain gut microbes can stimulate the production of serotonin in the gut, which ultimately impacts levels in the bloodstream and in the brain. If we’re low on these critical microbes or they are not communicating properly, it can ultimately lead to disturbances in the brain, and therefore mood.

03.01.2022 Diverticular disease develops when pouches form along your digestive tract, typically in your colon (large intestine). These pouches are known as diverticula. They form when weak spots in your intestinal wall balloon outward. Diverticulitis happens when diverticula become inflamed and, in some cases infected. This is possibly due to retention in the diverticula of undigested food residues and bacteria. This compromises the blood supply to the sac, which in turn promotes bacterial invasion. Many attacks are accompanied by minimal symptoms and heal spontaneously. Swipe for more info.

01.01.2022 Our body can break down food using molecular ‘scissors’ called enzymes. With every macronutrient, there are specific enzymes targeted to break them down into smaller pieces, allowing for better absorption into the bloodstream. We eat food but we absorb nutrients! Protein digesting enzymes are called protease. They help to break down protein into amino acids (smaller version of protein). Pepsin is an example of an enzyme created in the stomach and activated by HCl. Our saliva ...contains amylase, an enzyme that breaks starches (including wheat, corn, potatoes and rice) into sugars. Amylase enters digestion again in the small intestine, continuing the process. If amylase doesn’t adequately do its job, you can end up with bad fermentation of carbs (bad gas and pain in the gut). The enzyme lactase is responsible for breaking down lactose (the sugar in milk). Insufficient lactase is what causes lactose intolerance, which is becoming a very common issues in both children and adults. The enzyme lipase is responsible for helping break down triglycerides (fats) into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile (that comes from the liver and gallbladder) then helps the body absorb them, so that fat can get turned into energy. Symptoms of low digestive enzymes can include; Gas and bloating after meals Reflex and nausea The sensation that you have food sitting in your stomach and that experience lasts a long time after you finish eating Feeling full after eating a few bites of food Undigested food in your stool, loose stools or even diarrhoea (the quality of your poo can give you a great insight into your digestive health) Skin problems such as rashes and acne Mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression (from lack of absorption of nutrients) Low energy levels There are now supplements on the market that supply a boost of digestive enzymes and stimulate your body’s own production of them. Chewing on your food, reducing stress levels and eating a balanced diet, is a natural way to help increase enzyme production and activity.
