25.01.2022 It is Mental Health Week 10-18 October 2020 The wisdom of Winnie the Pooh was just so classical and not just for children. It seems to be so much more relevant ...this year in the 2020 the year of unknown and isolation for so many. A Little Story we wanted to share from Pooh Bear Pooh woke up that morning, and, for reasons that he didn't entirely understand, couldn't stop the tears from coming. He sat there in bed, his little body shaking, and he cried, and cried, and cried. Amidst his sobs, the phone rang. It was Piglet. "Oh Piglet," said Pooh, between sobs, in response to his friend's gentle enquiry as to how he was doing. "I just feel so Sad. So, so, Sad, almost like I might not ever be happy again. And I know that I shouldn't be feeling like this. I know there are so many people who have it worse off than me, and so I really have no right to be crying, with my lovely house, and my lovely garden, and the lovely woods all around me. But oh, Piglet: I am just SO Sad." Piglet was silent for a while, as Pooh's ragged sobbing filled the space between them. Then, as the sobs turned to gasps, he said, kindly: "You know, it isn't a competition." "What isn't a competition?" asked a confused sounding Pooh. "Sadness. Fear. Grief," said Piglet. "It's a mistake we often make, all of us. To think that, because there are people who are worse off than us, that that somehow invalidates how we are feeling. But that simply isn't true. You have as much right to feel unhappy as the next person; and, Pooh - and this is the really important bit - you also have just as much right to get the help that you need." "Help? What help?" asked Pooh. "I don't need help, Piglet. "Do I?" Pooh and Piglet talked for a long time, and Piglet suggested to Pooh some people that he might be able to call to talk to, because when you are feeling Sad, one of the most important things is not to let all of the Sad become trapped inside you, but instead to make sure that you have someone who can help you, who can talk through with you how the Sad is making you feeling, and some of the things that might be able to be done to support you with that. What's more, Piglet reminded Pooh that this support is there for absolutely everyone, that there isn't a minimum level of Sad that you have to be feeling before you qualify to speak to someone. Finally, Piglet asked Pooh to open his window and look up at the sky, and Pooh did so. "You see that sky?" Piglet asked his friend. "Do you see the blues and the golds and that big fluffy cloud that looks like a sheep eating a carrot?" Pooh looked, and he could indeed see the blues and the golds and the big fluffy cloud that looked like a sheep eating a carrot. "You and I," continued Piglet, "we are both under that same sky. And so, whenever the Sad comes, I want you to look up at that sky, and know that, however far apart we might be physically...we are also, at the same time, together. Perhaps, more together than we have ever been before." "Do you think this will ever end?" asked Pooh in a small voice. "This too shall pass," confirmed Piglet. "And I promise you, one day, you and I shall once again sit together, close enough to touch, sharing a little smackerel of something...under that blue gold sky." We all need a piglet in our lives... Who is yours? #mentalhealthweek #itsinthebag #womensupportingwomen

20.01.2022 Congratulations Counters! Together we have counted one million birds! This grumpy looking Tawny Frogmouth is cheering on the inside as we reach this wonderf...ul milestone with 5 days still to go. We are absolutely loving reading about your #AussieBirdCount experiences across our socials. It looks like so many of you are having such fun and special mention to all of those doing multiple counts a day! We love your enthusiasm! Our team are like busy honeyeaters on a huge flowering Banksia shrub, vetting the data, answering your questions and preparing posts for the rest of the week. A special thank you to the Chief Counters and BirdLife supporters who participated in our launch yesterday the Aussie Backyard Bird Count Broadcast! We are preparing snippets to share all this week, so stay tuned! In the meantime, the Broadcast can be viewed on our page's videos. Haven't signed up yet? 19.01.2022 As Premier of this state, Ive spent every day fighting for workers and fighting for jobs. I know what every Victorian knows: a job means financial security ...but it also means stability, purpose and the foundation to build your future. And I honestly never thought Id find myself in a position where Id have to ask people not to go to work. But if we're serious about driving this thing down and we absolutely must be we need to take unprecedented steps in limiting the movement of people, and therefore limiting the movement of this virus. I know there are lots of questions and Ill do my best to clarify some of them as simply as I can here. Under Stage 4 restrictions, businesses and industries will fall into three categories: First, those that will remain open including supermarkets, grocery stores, bottle shops, pharmacies, petrol stations, banks, newsagencies, post offices plus everyone involved in our frontline response. Services like food banks and disability services will continue to support our communitys most vulnerable members. Petrol stations will keep pumping fuel and pharmacies will keep dispensing prescriptions. In the second category are businesses that will need to stop all on-site operations including retail, some manufacturing, and administrative, financial and professional services. These businesses will need to shut by 11:59pm Wednesday 5 August unless they have specific circumstances that mean they need a bit longer to do so safely. Retail shops will be able to operate contactless click and collect and delivery services with strict safety protocols in place, and hardware stores can remain open onsite but for tradies only. In the third category are industries that cannot be shut down, but are at higher risk of outbreaks. This includes areas like food production and meat processing, and logistics and distribution. Continuing to operate safely will require some big changes. Slowing production and having fewer staff onsite at any given time. Staggering start, finish and break times. More PPE. Health declarations and more support for sick workers to ensure they stay home. These changes will be enforceable. And the onus will be on employers to make sure theyre doing the right thing by their workers, including ensuring those with symptoms and potentially the virus do not come to work. This is not easy. None of it is easy. It will be imperfect, and there may be unintended consequence of shutting down one industry but not another. Ill be upfront about that. But there's no guide on how to get through a global pandemic and closing industries on this scale has never been done before. These restrictions will of course have real and heavy consequences for a number of businesses, workers and their families. Well do everything we can to lighten that load. For those businesses that suffer significant losses or need to close as a result of the current restrictions, we will provide support through our expanded Business Support Fund. Businesses in regional Victoria will be eligible for a $5,000 grant. Those in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire can apply for up to $10,000 in recognition of spending longer under restrictions. I fully appreciate that peoples livelihoods are on the line. Jobs and futures at stake. And it is with an incredibly heavy heart that weve had to make these calls. But sadly, there is no alternative. There are no short cuts. Because there can be no economic recovery if we dont get the health response right. There can be no productivity if thousands of people are sick. And many, many more businesses would likely go under if this situation drags on for months. None of us want that. All of us want this to be over as soon as possible. Thats a given. And the only way to get there is if we all work together. Pull in the same direction. Lives and livelihoods depend on it.

07.01.2022 Wearing a face covering is a small action but it can make a big difference. And it's one of those things where the more people do it, the exponentially bigger... that difference becomes. That's why Victoria's Chief Health Officer is making it a requirement not just a recommendation. Here's how it'll work: If you live in metro Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and you need to leave home for one of the four essential reasons, you must have a covering over your mouth and nose. If you're travelling into regional Victoria for work or care reasons, that covering will need to remain on for the entire time you're there. If you live in regional Victoria, you'll need to wear a face covering if you visit metro Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and we're still recommending you wear one in your local area if you can't physically distance. There are a few exceptions. Kids under 12, those who have a professional or medical reason or if it's just not practical, like when you're out running. In our schools, that'll mean teachers don't have to wear a face covering while teaching but students attending for VCE, VCAL or for onsite supervision will. Everyone will be expected to wear one on the way to and from school. This requirement won't be enforced until 11:59pm on Wednesday 22 July to give people a chance to buy or make a covering but if you already have one, please start wearing it now. And if you don't have a mask, a scarf is better than nothing. As with everything, this shouldn't be about looking for loopholes. It's about each of us doing something small to keep everyone around us safe. If I'm wearing a covering, I'm helping to protect you. If you're wearing one, you're helping to protect me. And if we all wear one, we're all doing our bit to slow the spread.
