18.01.2022 What does Waitangi mean to you? I was talking to my mum last night about what we remembered about Waitangi growing up. Her memories were celebrated at Waitangi in the marae, jumping off the bridge for a swim, eating kaimoana and falling asleep in the car on the long drive home to Ahipara. ... Mine was what I was taught at school a piece of paper that was signed, I knew more about the Holocaust and the Endeavour more than my own history, the true meaning of the treaty and Aotearoa land wars. Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi), first signed on 6 February 1840 on the grounds of James Busby's house now known as Treaty House at Waitangi, in the Bay of Islands. The treaty was signed by representatives acting on behalf of the British Crown and, initially, about 45 Mori chiefs. Over the course of the next seven months, copies of the treaty were toured around the country to give other chiefs the opportunity to sign. The signing had the effect of securing British sovereignty over the islands of New Zealand, which was officially proclaimed on 21 May 1840. I’m grateful to my ancestors and proud to be Mori.
