25.01.2022 We have wonderful young gentleman come volunteer with us on Wednesdays, his day out with his carer, and he chooses to come help us, help others We love that week by week he is becoming more comfortable. Now singing loudly along with songs, he has a fondness for 70's music (as do many of our volunteers), knows every word, often busting out some great moves and dancing along, and today vogueing

24.01.2022 We have been offered sugar soap, a lot of it. This would be a great help with the cleanup, after the floods, and cleaning products are quite expensive. Wanted to gauge how much to accept (one or two pallets?), as we don't have a lot of room and would need to move it rather quickly. Don't want to accept something or too much of, as some could be redirected to another flood affected area.

22.01.2022 A roof over your head, doesn't always constitute having a home. Many of those who have suffered long term homelessness find it difficult to adjust, especially when they are housed out of area, away from what is familiar to them. On the streets they had sense of community, their own community. Always heartbreaking when they reach out in tears, trying to adjust but not able to, just wanting someone to talk too. Lonliness can be terrible thing. Thinking a coffee and chat a little further afield today, Lalor Park.

21.01.2022 Could not have come at a better time MUTUAL OBLIGATION VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR JOBSEEKERS... We have just now been approved as a voluntary work organisation. Which means, Jobseekers are now able to meet their volunteer hours as part of their mutual obligation requirements with centrelink, with us. Volunteering to meet these obligations can be done at Hawkesbury's Helping Hands, with a mutually suitable role and days agreed upon between both parties before commencement. For more information and any enquires please email us at [email protected] or call 4577 7077.

18.01.2022 So much work goes on behind the scenes you don't see, to give everyone a little extra something. Late this afternoon whilst sitting at Cassidy's graduation lunch, get a call from Foodbank NSW & ACT. They have 40 boxes of precooked ready fresh meals, that run out of date today, do we want them? could we use them? Yes please!! as we knew we could put them in the freezer before the end of their use by date - in other words rescue the food and give to people in need. Since it was so last minute , took quite bit of organising. Huge thanks to Rex and Paul who hitched the trailer last minute headed over in heavy traffic to pick them up. I met them at The Hive just now, to unload into the freezer. Please remember that everything we distribute, hours & hours go on behind the scenes to help you, this is just one example

17.01.2022 The Hawkesbury Community Kitchen is in desperate need of volunteers. Can you help? For more information please contact them directly.

15.01.2022 Currently we are assisting over 2,000 people weekly with food relief through our many programmes and sharing our bounty with other charities. With many organisations closing over the Christmas period, some for up to a month, if you have followed our page you know we start to stockpile food this time every year, so no-one goes hungry on our watch during that time. Last year we also helped those affected by the devastating bushfires that ripped though not only our community bu...t others, as well as volunteers from many emergency services because their volunteers couldn't afford to put food on their families tables, whilst they were out protecting us, because we had food and were we open. This year we have Covid, and our postcode is in the top ten worst affected financially. There is work to be done. Our crew has been working overtime of late preparing/thinking for what we know is going to be a very difficult time for so many, especially with more job losses, more people becoming homeless and its only going to get worse we fear, with benefits being cut December 31st. We are in unchartered waters, but we promise to do the very best we can. We are expecting to move/distribute more goods this year than any other, which I wouldn't think was possible. Since the start of Covid we have been working at near full capacity as is, and quickly running out of room as we prepare for the upcoming holiday period. What we need the most and desperately right now is even more space, than we already have, to use during this period. Like a warehouse just for a 6 week period, to store stuff, sort stuff, accept stuff etc so we can operate more efficiently and to the best of our abilities and capabilities. We aren't talking a few extra pallets a week on top off what we are currently distributing, we are talking countless more. So, to make a long post shorter, will cut right to the chase. We are looking for a unit warehouse in or close to South Windsor to use for 6 weeks (maybe 7) starting November 30th. Does anyone have any contacts with anyone? is there a commercial real estate agent out there, that knows of a property that has been empty for awhile ? that we could possibly use/rent for 6-7 weeks. Thank you See more

14.01.2022 Had a little tiff this afternoon, via Facebook messenger. So wanted to address it here, as it was quite upsetting, not needed and we don't want it to happen again. We get countless requests to share things on our page. This afternoon another one, from a person representing an organisation/business we had never heard of or had any contact with before. They have an event happening in the near future and wanted us to share it. We cannot share every request on our page becaus...e someone asks. If you do for one ? We needed to ask a few questions first, especially as it was paid event and we didn't know who they were. We asked was it a fundraiser? who is it going to benefit? are you a non for profit? where is the money raised going? Please understand all these questions we feel we must ask for us to share here. We gladly share fundraisers or events for any of our charity partners and any charities who ask us, no problem. What we won't do is share an event we know nothing about. Go start a page or a group, create an event on it, but don't be upset with us because we won't share it on our page. This page is not free advertising. If you could have answered the questions we asked, we would have gladly shared it. And we don't appreciate threats. Thank you Linda See more

09.01.2022 Thank you Action Insurance Brokers for so kindly and generously organising and paying for our public liability insurance again this year as they do every year!! Please see them for all your insurance needs!! 08.01.2022 This is quite a long post, so please read in its entirety As you know we have people come from all over to our hamper days and assistance on Wednesdays and Saturdays, these will continue as usual throughout the holiday season. As many charities close, depending on need, we may open an extra day or two. Like most of this year, we will just have to play it by ear, sometimes daily, so please do keep an eye on the page for updates and posts. Our meal services for those experie...ncing homelessness will remain the same and we will probably pick up a couple more, depending on other closures. Again we do not know at this stage. We have had countless enquires about Christmas hampers and presents. Unfortunately we cannot help everyone with these, so they will only be for Hawkesbury residents - details on that and how to book in, up in the next few days. As many people weekly come get assistance from us from the Blacktown, Penrith and Blue Mountains LGA's, if you know of organisations in those areas that are doing Christmas hampers and presents, please let us know, so we can refer people there. At this stage we are going to distribute our Christmas hampers and presents on Tuesday December 22nd, and that way if we have any spare for others we can distribute them December 23rd to those in need, on our usual hamper day. Just sharing thoughts and keeping you updated where we are at. Please wait until we have finalised all details about how we are going to proceed and how to book in, before contacting us. We will be needing extra volunteers (minimum 16 years old), especially with the sorting and packing and making up the Christmas hampers and also a massive working bee to sort through one of our off site large storage sheds. If you remember, just before lockdown we took on an extra storage area to strip down and back of everything not immediately needed, we thought we would only need it for a few months back then, its now been nine, there is Christmas Stock in there, and we would also like to concentrate everything so we can in the next month or so, cut that added monthly cost. Thank you for taking the time to read this very long post x

07.01.2022 Even in some darkness light can be found. Been one of those days. This morning was out and about early came across someone experiencing homelessness, we sat and chatted for ages, sharing stories and just enjoying the crisp morning together over a coffee Had to call by the unit to pick up some supplies, as I was locking up the phone was ringing, I hesitated, answer or not ? On my lonesome and had somewhere to be, was already running late, but answered. Someone in desperate need of food, and didn’t have enough even for tonight. Quickly put a hamper together and left it out for them to collect. These are the stories that keep us all going, and the ones we want to concentrate on, the ones with kindness and light.

07.01.2022 Thank you CarNet Western Sydney

01.01.2022 We love the relationships we have with so many agencies and organisations, helping and supporting each other whenever and however we can As you know we have multiple services onsite Wednesdays to assist those experiencing homelessness. Stacy from Housing and Chrissie from Wentworth Housing were there as they are every week Another person we work with, the lovely Bronwyn from another organisation called them as she knew they were with us, and asked them could they gra...b some items from us, for some homeless persons who had finally been housed and had absolutely nothing. Thankfully we were able to supply saucepans, kettle, blow up mattresses, towels, linen, pillows, quilts, quilt covers, blankets, pillow cases, cleaning products, food and toiletries, just to see them through the first few days until their welcome packs and furniture arrive See more
