23.01.2022 At Hawthorne Clinic, we’re welcoming local families to volunteer for the Sleep Transitions And Regularity Study (STARS), currently being undertaken by the University of Queensland. The researchers are looking into childhood sleep development and want to work with families of children aged 9-12 months to explore how early childhood sleep patterns relate to behaviour, learning and health. If selected, you and your child’s participation will involve keeping a diary, monthly chec...k-ins, six-monthly online survey, sleep measurements, play-based activities and observations. Hawthorne Clinic is not part of STARS, but we think it is worthwhile so we invite you to find out more at https://survey.app.uq.edu.au/starstudy.aspx.

17.01.2022 Through the past month, a few faces around Hawthorne Clinic have been sporting a bit more fuzz than usual. Yes, our annual Movember charity fundraising push has been underway. Now, even though November is over, weve decided to keep up the fundraising effort going as we push towards our $500 goal. As you can see, our moustache-growing efforts have produced mixed results. Yasu and Caleb have fairly good beards on their way. Keith is been sporting a thick handlebar mo. As for Lucas, he seems to somehow to have less facial hair overall. Were looking forward to it being over, to be honest, Lucas laughs. Beards and summer dont mix! The team is close to its fundraising goal and every dollar helps. You can donate in person at the clinic or online at https://moteam.co/hawthorne-clinic-mobro-s?mc=1.

15.01.2022 Hawthorne Clinic’s telehealth consultations allow our doctors to treat patients safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Question: How can I get good healthcare in a telehealth consultation? Answer: If your GP is familiar with your medical history, it’s likely there will be no difference from usual routine consultations - only the scope for physical examination is limited. If your doctor needs to see you face-to-face to examine or treat you, they will request an in-person consult...ation. Still have questions? Contact us today to see how we can help. 12.01.2022 Say hello to Niki OBrien - our newest team member. Shes on the reception desk full-time as a friendly face welcoming patients. "I am so excited. Everyone here is so lovely, Niki says. I love that at family GPs you get to see generations come through and see them in their ups and downs - to see the children grow up. That is rewarding and meaningful to me, she says. ... I want to bring my own kind of friendly, caring and approachable energy to the clinic. That is what I want to be known for."
10.01.2022 Today, 10 September, is Australias national day when we ask Are you OK? of someone our gut instinct tells us might be struggling. And 2020 has been a tough one: the bushfires, then COVID-19 and now a recession. With so many challenges, its even more important for us all to stay connected and, if youre able, be willing to support others.... So, when you ask R U OK? and the answer isnt affirmative, there are resources out there for continuing what can be a difficult, yet necessary, conversation. At Hawthorne Clinic we encourage you to visit www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day for more free information. Because asking R U OK? isnt just for one day: it could be any day, and its always good to know how to continue the conversation.
10.01.2022 Remaining focused on your healthcare Dear patients and community, At Hawthorne Clinic, our policies and procedures continue to evolve in our approach to caring for all our patients during this worrisome time.... As the demand for health services increases, we have increased the number of doctors and nurses consulting each day. Were focused on ensuring that healthcare not related to COVID-19 continues as seamlessly as possible. When you visit the practice you will notice that were strict in our managing of infection control. You will be asked questions to assess your risk and you may be instructed to wear a mask or wait somewhere that decreases the risk of infection to other patients. Your doctor or nurse may wear a mask or face shield to protect themselves and others. You may be called by reception to be offered a telephone consultation rather than coming into the practice. In an effort to stop potentially infectious patients from attending the clinic in this high-risk time and to, therefore, protect all patients, we are now offering private telephone consultations. More details on these are available on our site: https://www.hawthorneclinic.com.au//Remaining-focused-on-y Thank you for your understanding and patience. The spread of the coronavirus and the Australian Governments response to the pandemic is a continually changing situation. Yours in health, Dr Carmen Main
09.01.2022 We have excellent stocks of the 2020 flu vaccine As coronavirus/COVID-19 remains a persistent threat in Australia, the flu season is ramping up. In isolation, either of these respiratory viruses is significant. To contract both at the same time greatly increases your risk of an adverse health outcome. This is why protecting the health of each member of your family wherever possible - including your parents - is especially important in 2020.... There is something you can do: get your Quadrivalent or Over-65s 2020 influenza vaccine as soon as possible. At Hawthorne Clinic, we have excellent stocks of both vaccines on hand. So far, thousands of your neighbours have already taken action; however, the more people who are protected, the less the flu can act to worsen the current public health emergency. The time to book your flu vaccinations is now. Contact our reception team: Phone 07 3399 5444 Email: [email protected] Online: www.hawthorneclinic.com.au/contact Note well: As part of our anti-COVID-19 measures, we are not accepting walk-in doctor visits. You must contact us first. This measure is there to protect both you and our frontline medical staff.

06.01.2022 One of our popular GPs, Dr Yasu Takao, recently represented us at the GP19 conference held in Adelaide by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). As well as attending the event, Dr Takao also presented in the conferences inaugural PitchFest session. A "Shark Tank" style event, Dr Takao, along with NSW-based collaborator Dr Bronwen Spalding, presented Aridocs.net - an artificial intelligence (AI) that helps GPs improve their workflow. Receiving an honourable mention, Aridocs.net took 3rd place overall out of a field of 80 entrants and 10 finalists. Well done, Dr Takao and Dr Spalding!
06.01.2022 If you are interested, please enquire. Or, if you know someone suitable, please forward the job posting.
06.01.2022 Should our doctors request it, you can come in to see us at the clinic in person. Question: Is it safe to come inside the practice? Answer: Yes. Hawthorne Clinic triages every person who attends an appointment. This allows us to ensure all patients with any respiratory symptoms are seen in a separate area and do not spend time in the main clinic. It means that when you come in you can be sure weve taken every precaution to protect you from being exposed to respiratory infect...ions. Still have questions? Get in touch and our reception staff will help. Phone: 07 3399 5444.
05.01.2022 Movember has kicked off at Hawthorne Clinic! Four of our team are participating in Movember 2019 to try to change the face of mens health. Reception team member Caleb Pitt, GPs Dr Keith MacLaverty and Dr Yasu Takao, plus practice manager, Lucas Down, hung up their razors on November 1. Its uncertain exactly what the results will be in a months time. Both Yasu and Caleb say they might struggle to grow much, but theyre still keen to join in.... But why Movember? The answer is that globally men have comparatively poorer health and shorter lifespans than women. Australia is no exception to this. Our hope is that being part of Movember can start a few conversations and help remove the stigma surrounding mens health and have a bit of fun doing it. 04.01.2022 COVID-19 update: current processes and policies from our Practice Manager During this current pandemic, our absolute priority at Hawthorne Clinic is to keep our staff and our patients as protected as possible against the risks of contracting the COVID-19 virus. To achieve this, it has been necessary to implement significant changes to how we serve your healthcare needs. Among the most noticeable changes are:... A bulk-billed Telehealth consultation (either video or phone) is the initial step in ALL interactions with a GP. In many cases, this will be sufficient to meet the patients requirements. If not, the GP will arrange for the patient to attend the practice for a face-to-face consultation. (All face-to-face consultations, including Respiratory Clinic visits, are billed privately as per our usual billing policy). For patients who do attend the practice, you will notice that we are limiting your entrance inside the practice until absolutely necessary. We appreciate that these changes, along with our other infection control processes, can be somewhat onerous and inconvenient. We apologise for any inconvenience caused; however, we remain committed to doing what we believe to be necessary to keep our people and practice community safe. We acknowledge that everyone is under heightened levels of stress and pressure as this pandemic rolls on. Were all committed to doing our best to serve you in a polite and efficient manner. Likewise, we ask that our community commits to treating our doctors and staff with respect and tolerance in your interactions with us. Together, with patience and understanding, we can navigate our way through these uncertain times. Kind Regards, Lucas Down Practice Manager
