21.01.2022 Here's a little update and snapshot about what I've been up to the last few years since becoming a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist in 2017 and becoming my own boss. In 2018 I spent 4 amazing and intense days in Sydney studying Craniosacral Therapy 1 with The Upledger Institute Later that year after falling pregnant I studied Certificate of Pregnancy Massage when I was 20 weeks with Mia! ... For all of my pregnancy until I was around 30 weeks pregnant I was working most Saturdays at The Massage Centre of Hobart down in Salamanca. Meanwhile I also worked a couple of days from the beautiful wellness centre in Sandy Bay, Body Stillness. And all in between that I was building my own small business Hobart Aged Care Massage, treating elderly clients in their home, through organisations such as Anglicare, The Migrant Resource Centre, The District Nurses and Care Forward. So after I had Mia and I gradually returned to massaging, I decided to just focus on building my own business and only see my "oldies" as I like to call them in their houses. This gave me such flexibility to work around my husbands work and I truly love gently treating our most vulnerable people. Massage therapy is such an important part of their well-being, which keeps them independent and in their homes. Those of you reading, I may have treated your loved one until they passed on. So it might be a little while yet, before I can safely return to those clients, particularly those who are at most risk. So in the meantime, I'll be returning to providing Remedial Massage in a clinical setting, where proper infection control protocols can be carried out. Please PM me if you would like to book in for a remedial massage. Private Health Rebates will be available. Oh and if I've ever given you a massage here in Hobart or Melbourne, I'd love it if you could give me a review Stay tuned! Stay well xx

20.01.2022 These hands have been off work for a few weeks now Usually I would have my nails nice and short when treating my elderly clients, so not to scratch their delicate ageing skin. So since we've been staying at home thanks to COVID-19, they've been given a chance to grow nice and strong While it was nice and fancy for a few days, I fogot how annoying they can be when you're getting your hands dirty gardening ... I also keep scratching my 14 month old daughter. Then I whacked my hand on a door frame today and broke a nail, so that was it for me, back to short they go! Bur all that aside, I am looking forward to having a reason to keep them short again. I miss using my hands for a bigger purpose I miss being able to provide comfort to those who need it, because we all know how important touch is in our lives. Especially now. I miss my job and I miss my clients. But together we will get through this! Stay safe everyone and have a relaxing time at home this weekend #massagetherapy #remedial #agedcare #massage #hobartmassage #covid19 #hobartagedcaremassage

19.01.2022 Yesterday was a tough day for me. I made the difficult but very necessary decision to cancel all of my future Aged Care in-home massage bookings. The last few weeks have been difficult for a lot of people, particularly small businesses and the health service industry. But let us not forget about the elderly. They are already isolated enough and touch deprived, and are our most vulnerable citizens to this nasty virus. To continue working and supporting my clients, I started p...racticing extreme social distancing, enhanced my infection control procedures and kept up to date with my massage associations. Although, I felt the social distancing rule of 1.5m cannot be seriously applied in our line of work. It is my duty of care and my responsibility to keep my clients safe and hope this nightmare passes quickly. I will be checking in with my clients regularly to see how they are coping with everything and lend my ears for a chat if they are feeling lonely. They always do love a good chat! Gosh I'll miss them :( In the meantime, I'll be spending a lot more time with my husband and daughter, getting into nature, cooking healthy meals and looking after my own health. Look after yourselves everyone, don't forget to call your grandparents or elderly friends and we'll see each other face to face when this storm passes Big love, Hayley x #covid_19 #hobartmassage #agedcare #agedcaremassage #protecttheelderly

19.01.2022 So yesterday I had surgery on my knee and femur. It was a long time coming... Some of you know about my journey, but for those that don't and are interested to learn a bit about me, keep reading... 16 years ago I had a horse accident. I came flying off a horse that got spooked and broke my femur, as well as fracturing my neck, back and skull. I was airlifted by the Snowy Hydro Rescue Helicopter to the Canberra hospital where I spent 2 days in ICU and a total of 6 weeks in ...the high dependency ward. Things were touch and and go there for a few days while I was on machines breathing for me and then a halo brace fitted to my head and body to keep my neck in place (like Superman!) I spent 3 months in a wheelchair while I had my halo on, I was 21 years old. No Facebook. No YouTube, or Netflix, dial up very expensive internet. It was a very lonely time for me and not to mention a very tough time for my family. It took me a good year or so to learn to walk again properly and I started immersing myself in learning how the body heals itself and what different therapies would be good for my recovery. I was actually studying massage at the time, which obviously had to be postponed for a while. 11 years, but I finally got there and now I'm doing what I absolutely love and what is my true calling So when it comes to chronic pain, I know! I can empathise with my clients and relate to them on a higher level that not many people can. So since my fall of that horse, my left femur has been a reminder of how strong and resilient I am and that the body can achieve many great things. I decided earlier this year that I would have the titanium cross pins removed and clean up my knee joint as they were causing a lot of discomfort and holding me back from gaining the strength I needed in my quads, glutes, and core muscles. After all, I'm not getting any younger, and from this I'm sure to avoid a full knee reconstruction in my later years and preserve my bone health! I just want to say thank you to the @petterwoodorthopaedics team at Calvary Hospital. I'm resting up today enjoying my little care package I received from #petterwoodcare

17.01.2022 Throw back to when Lilly and I worked a day at a MONA event. Such fun times, doing what we love and meeting new people. @ MONA - Museum of Old and New Art

13.01.2022 What's your favourite herbal tea to drink? Do you drink tea or coffee in the morning? I admit, I drink a fair bit of coffee to get me through these days at home at the moment, with a toddler nonetheless ... But nothing beats a herbal tea before bed, to relax and unwind My favourite is licorice tea. I love that sweet after taste! Did you know licorice root supports the adrenal glands and reduces stress, inflammation and fatigue! Amazing herb. I'd love to find more loose leaf teas to add to my tea collection though, as I try to avoid bags if I can Let me know your favourite and bonus points if you can tag a local Tasmanian company! . . . . #herbaltea #bedtimetea #licoriceroot #coffee #relaxandunwind #tasmaniantea #tassie #tea #adrenals #fatigue #chronicfatigue #fibromyalgia #hormonesupport

11.01.2022 With the current global and local concerns around the Coronavirus we want to provide you with some practical and reassuring advice around how to take care of yo...urselves and each other. We understand that the current situation is confusing, and the uncertainty can be frightening for some. We believe that first and foremost, we need to look after each other. We’ve therefore put together a list of simple steps you can take at this time to take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We have also listed ways in which you can access our care in the event that you have reason to avoid coming in in person (see further below) we have several options for phone and skype consultations as well as having items posted to you, and we can make this very easy for you! Our list of suggestions below has been compiled with the intention of providing you with simple steps for actions you can take at home, or recommendations for things that you can access fairly easily. These treatments have the potential to support your general health and immune resilience, but to be clear, none of them have any proven action in preventing or treating coronavirus infection. Gargle and drink GREEN TEA. Consuming green tea, in particular gargling it, has been shown to reduce the risk of contracting influenza and the common cold. The tannins in green tea have been shown to have broad antiviral effects topically. In one study, residents in an aged care facility gargling the equivalent of cup of green tea three times daily were more than 15 times less likely (OR 15.7) to catch the flu https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=16970537 Take a Vitamin D supplement. Living in Tasmania is known to increase our risk of having low vitamin D. A number of studies have shown that taking vitamin D, particularly in people who are vitamin D deficient, reduces the chances of developing acute respiratory infections including influenza. Most studies reviewed used adult doses ranging from 2000IU to 4000IU a day, which is known to be safe to take long term even in the absence of deficiency https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=30675873 Eat probiotic foods daily. Consuming probiotic foods regularly or taking a probiotic supplement has been shown to reduce the risk of developing an upper respiratory tract infection https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=25927096 You can consume probiotics through foods such as probiotic yogurt (Vaalia has 3 well researched viable strains in therapeutic amounts), sauerkraut or kimchi, in addition to many others. All of these can be consumed on a daily basis. If you would prefer to take a supplement, talk to us at Goulds about the most ideal one for your situation. Eat plenty of raw crushed GARLIC. We don’t care if you stink, we can all stink together! Garlic is one of nature’s best antimicrobials, and it is quite amazing in that it appears to be selective in its action - it doesn’t wipe out your good bacteria. Local organic garlic is best if you can access it, but don’t worry if you can’t eat what you can find. Ensure you are eating raw garlic according to your own tolerance as not everyone can stomach it. We find that adding crushed garlic to a meal just before consuming it, or having it with avocado on wholesome bread, improves tolerability. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=PMC4103721 Keep any medicines you regularly use in stock and within date. This includes pharmaceuticals (check your scripts are also in date), herbal remedies and nutritional supplements. At Goulds we have taken measures to ensure we have enough immune and respiratory herbs in stock to get through the winter season, and while we encourage you to be prepared, we emphatically ask that you don’t stock pile herbs, so that we can continue to serve the community through the winter period. Tinctures are also not something we can accept returns for, so please think about how much you realistically need. We are setting a limit of 500ml per person for respiratory and immune mixes, and while we won’t be policing repeat visits, we ask that everyone be mindful of others within the community also having access to herbal medicines. Keep your home above 16C. Having a cold home reduces respiratory resilience and increases susceptibility to and mortality from respiratory tract infections. This is especially important for people who are elderly, asthmatic, or have other chronic/recurrent respiratory conditions. http://www.instituteofhealthequity.org//the-health-impacts Eat a healthy well balanced diet. Eat an abundance of plant foods, high antioxidant foods (especially berries, kiwifruit and purple grapes), fresh local fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and plenty of legumes. These help to feed your beneficial gut bacteria, which will assist you with immune resilience. They also ensure you have a healthy intake of vitamin C along with other nutrients important for immune health. Don’t overindulge with alcohol. Binge drinking is bad for your gut flora, and also impairs immune function and increases the severity of respiratory tract infections https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4590612/ If you smoke, action a quit plan. Contact QuitTas for support https://www.quittas.org.au/ Get enough sleep, maintain a healthy exercise regime, and try to keep stress levels in check. We understand that these things can be easier said than done, but all three of these are integral to your immune system working well. So take the opportunities that present to take care of yourself. If you do get sick, don’t panic, but please minimise your contact with other people, and follow the guidelines about self-isolation. SELF ISOLATION IS RECOMMENDED IF: You have returned from or transited through any high-risk countries within the last 14 days. (It appears prudent to extend this to moderate risk countries also.) At the time of writing this post (12th March 2020) the following countries are considered high and moderate risk: Mainland China; Iran; Italy; South Korea; Cambodia; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Japan; Singapore and Thailand. It appears that USA may soon be classed as moderate risk also. You have been in close contact with anyone who has recently transited through these countries. You have been in contact with anyone who has confirmed coronavirus or is suspected to be at risk of being exposed to the virus. You have recently returned from anywhere overseas and have even mild cold or flu symptoms. ***In all of these cases you should call the Coronavirus hotline on 1800 671 738 in Hobart or 1800 020 080 nationally (in Australia) to clarify your next step. https://www.health.gov.au//coronavirus-covid-19-informatio We can offer you support remotely over the phone or skype, rather than in person. How can we help you if you have symptoms or are at risk of carrying the virus, and need our support? We can offer you naturopathic advice over the phone just as you would receive if you visited our Apothecary We offer phone and skype consultations in our clinic We do postal orders and can send any products out to you or if you are local, you could arrange for a friend or family member to collect medicines for you. If you are uncertain or want to avoid exposing others, please give us a call as we can still help you. Our phones are very busy at the moment, so if you can’t get through to us immediately, wait a little while and try us again. Our reception team will also endeavour to return any missed calls. Rest assured that we are here for you, and will help you as quickly as we can. We are taking steps to minimise the spread of infections in our clinic and apothecary, and our staff are also taking many measures to support their immune systems, in order to approach this season in a proactive way. Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate this together.

06.01.2022 Tomorrow will be 8 weeks since I had surgery on my knee and femur to remove 3 titanium pins and clean up my knee joint. Every week I'm getting stronger and stronger and moving along well in my recovery journey I'm back in full swing seeing my aged care massage clients with @hobartagedcaremassage, and as well as being a mum to my busy 19 month old toddler, I've seriously needed to up my fitness to keep up with her! I couldn't do the normal gym routine, it's just not my thi...ng, I needed something more to push me, guide me as well as giving me the low impact, core strengthening exercises that my body needs to get strong. I've now found myself on the @kxpilates train! I am so hooked. I just did my second session at Rosny this morning so just getting in a bit of fresh air at Bellerive Beach before my first mobile client for the day It feels so good to be able to do proper squats and lunges without the wrong kind of pain stopping me from pushing myself further. Ooh the burn! Pumped for my next class. (Also, a quick shout out to my amazing hubby/SAHD @ben_appleby_oneacre, I love you and thank you for supporting me, I couldnt do this without you )

03.01.2022 #Recovery Day 3: Pain has reduced a lot since Friday. I'm able to put some weight down but my knee is still quite swollen and some bruising has shown up down my tibialis anterior so I'm still hobbling around the house a bit and carefully juggling a toddler too! I woke up fresh this morning and just had a nice hot shower while Ben and Mia are out visiting his mum ... Time for a bit of self massage before I get stuck into some work. Just some very light strokes to promote lymphatic draining to reduce swelling. These are my go to's today... Lavender Massage Oil Recovery Magnesium Spray Sweet Almond Oil Kunzea Oil.
