15.01.2022 Like many of the big life decisions you’ll make, getting your estate Plan together isn’t the most comfortable exercise. What I can promise you, though, is the feeling of profound relief associated with knowing that whatever happens, your loved ones are protected. Promise.

09.01.2022 When we talk about protecting assets for our children, there’s the obvious protections that apply for young children in the immediate aftermath of loss and grief, but a well-considered Estate Plan goes a bit further than that. As much as we hate to think of our children as adults in unequal relationships or victims of domestic violence, a well-considered and executed Estate Plan will protect your precious babies as adults, and ensure that your child’s future partner isn’t entitled to a share in their inheritance. A Testamentary Trust provides the best possible financial security and protection of an inheritance, which will give the freedom of choice for your child to leave a relationship if and when they decide.

02.01.2022 How much is enough? The answer to this will vary quite significantly depending on your life stage and situation, but often clients will come to me to get started with their Estate Plan not knowing if the assets and insurances they have in place will be enough to provide for their families in the event of their death. A good start is to think about how much time your partner would need away from work in order to grieve, and how much would be required to adequately support them... for each year until your youngest child reaches adulthood. Then, if your assets aren’t enough [and they won’t be for most people] make sure you’ve got an appropriate level of insurance to cover the balance. And if your assets would be enough, congratulations! You are what we called self insured, which is the goal for us all eventually.
