22.01.2022 It’s been a long year and we’re taking a well-earned break over Christmas and New Year. Our offices will be closed from 5pm Wednesday December 23rd until 9am Monday January 11th. Non-urgent enquiries, including requests for appointments and referrals, can still be emailed throughout the holidays to [email protected]. They will be addressed when the office re-opens. Please note that all phones, including Lisa’s mobile, will be unattended over this period. If you have an emergency please call St Vincent’s Hospital on (02) 8382 1111 and ask for the ENT Registrar, or visit your nearest hospital emergency department. We’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and we look forward to seeing you again in the new year.

21.01.2022 Bigfoot sighting in Suite 1403! Welcome back Lisa, we’ve missed you

18.01.2022 Our dear Sister Ses. We are saddened at the passing of Sister Sesarina (Ses) Bau rsc and we would like to honour her memory and contribution as an inspiring le...ader at our Hospitals and Trustee of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation. Sister Ses worked across St Vincent's for many years, starting her nursing career at our St Joseph's campus in Auburn in 1970, where she held senior appointments in clinical and community health, with a strong focus on surgery. In more recent times, Sister Ses served as Patient and Staff Support in our ICU and Heart Lung Clinic at St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst where she provided counsel and comfort for staff, patients and their loved ones when they needed it most. Sister’s healing ministry spanned over 50 years, including overseas postings to third world countries in the Pacific region. In June 2018, Sister Ses retired from St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney at the age of 84. In February this year Sister celebrated her Golden Jubilee; her 50th anniversary of religious profession. Sister Ses had a great love of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation and was a proud trustee from 2010 to 2018. I feel a deep connection to the Foundation because of their commitment to the Sisters’ Mission and our Values and I am so grateful to be involved with an organisation that continues to help those in need. We are all extremely blessed and humbled to have worked with Sister Ses, whose role at the Foundation has been far greater than we can adequately describe, and today we are feeling a major void in her absence from our lives. We will miss her guidance, commitment, friendship and humour. May Sister Ses rest in eternal peace. Read more about Sister Ses here https://www.supportstvincents.com.au//our-stories/sr-sesa/

18.01.2022 Congratulations to our Senior ENT-Head and Neck Registrar Dr Cara Morris for her success in the recent Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship Exams (RACS). Richard has had to keep the good news to himself all week as Cara was not informed by RACS until this afternoon. Richard was one of a team of examiners who tested Cara’s skills, knowledge and expertise over three days last weekend. The team included examiners like Richard who were re-called for special state bas...ed exams. The standard Australian/New Zealand single location exams are traditionally held in May but had to be postponed and reset because of the pandemic. Cara and other candidates like her have had a long, COVID interrupted journey to reach this major milestone. We wish her much happiness and success in the future and hope she enjoyed Richard’s recreation of being welcomed into the examiners court #FRACS See more

16.01.2022 Recently The Feed SBS interviewed Richard about the implications of the dramatic drop in people presenting to cancer screenings during the pandemic. The news story went to air November 3. 15.01.2022 Yikes, we are experiencing some issues with our phones. Please email us at [email protected] if you can’t get through. We have been advised this is a campus wide issue caused by a Telstra outage. SVHA IT department are working with Telstra in an attempt to resolve the problems as a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, we have not been given a fix time.

13.01.2022 In his latest blog post Richard shares patient stories describing their experiences of delayed diagnosis of HPV positive throat cancer. The blog coincides with a new study by the St Vincent's Head and Neck Service about to be published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery. The study shows that patients with human papilloma virus associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+ OPSCC) typically take nearly twice as long to be diagnosed as patients with HPV negative head and neck cancers #headandneckcancer #tonsilcancer #lingualtonsil #cancerjourney https://www.richardgallagher.com.au//waiting-40-weeks-for/

13.01.2022 Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to Griffith we go #regionalhealth

11.01.2022 No, Richard and Brett are not wrestling an octopus, they are setting up the arms of the da Vinci robot at the start of a TORS case. Today’s TORS list includes four patients, all of whom are being treated for HPV positive oropharyngeal cancers. Thank you Jess for the great photo #teamwork #transoralroboticsurgery #hpv #TORS #davincirobot

09.01.2022 Without Allied Health and our Nurses there is no St Vincent’s Head and Neck Cancer MDT. Veronica, thank you for organising tonight, you put the social in Social Worker. Wishing you all a merry whatever takes your fancy (yes of course Tahnee is head of the table, what did you expect)

09.01.2022 Four Otolaryngology (ENT) - Head and Neck surgeons, one Otolaryngology (ENT) - Head and Neck registrar, five concurrent consulting rooms, sixty something patients, and approximately one hundred conversations between surgeons along the lines of, what do you think about.... St Vincent’s Sydney public Head and Neck Cancer Service Outpatients clinic in action. 07.01.2022 Richard loves his lunch at St Vincent’s Community Private Hospital Griffith. He says, no one makes a sandwich like a regional hospital. Today’s offering includes corned beef and salad and chicken and salad. But he wants us to point out that St Vincent’s Griffith always offers him a fabulous hot lunch which he feels rude to decline especially as the kitchen has such an amazing reputation. We think he’ll be forgiven. Ah Griffith. So much fabulous food, so little time #riverina #murrumbidgee #riverinafresh #regionalhealth

07.01.2022 Right now there's nothing to stop companies selling dodgy hand sanitiser in Australia - even during a pandemic. Together we can change that. Sign the petition to put an end to dodgy hand sanitiser: choice.com.au/handsanitiser

07.01.2022 Congratulations to Vincent Namatjira for winning the 2020 Archibald Prize with his portrait of Adam Goodes. If you visited our practice between 2015-2018 when we were in St Vincent’s Clinic you would have seen Namatjira’s 2013 work titled Captain Cook as part of our Artbank collection. It started a lot of conversations! #archibaldprize

06.01.2022 This #NAIDOC Week we're shining a light on some of our staff who were the first Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in their role here at St Vincent...'s. Introducing Nurse Unit Manager, Sonia Robinson. ******* "I’m a proud Bunjalung woman from the northern coastal area of NSW. I am from a large family of 8 children and the only one that has obtained a University qualification. I #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Aboriginal Nursing Unit Manager based in the Emergency Department at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. I joined St Vincent’s in 1994 and have been nursing now for 26 years. Although I have done many clinical roles, I have always gravitated towards leadership positions and in 2018 I was appointed a permanent Operational Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) role in the Emergency Department. In my time as a NUM I am also very proud to say that I have created the process of the Aboriginal 48hr Follow-up of all of our Indigenous patients and I also oversee the care of patients that present to our Indigenous Flexi-Clinic. During my time at St Vincent's, I have undertaken further training in Trauma and am currently studying my Graduate Certificate Health Management. I feel privileged to be part of an organisation that values their patients, communities and staff. The opportunities I have been offered have allowed me to be a strong and supportive leader that provides exceptional care to our community".

06.01.2022 We are all out of metaphors for 2020

06.01.2022 Richard has developed a training module for GPs about HPV related oropharyngeal cancer. We are proud of his hard work putting this online education program together. GPs can earn CPD points (continuing professional development) by completing the program.

04.01.2022 This NAIDOC Week, we've extended the theme "Always Was, Always Will Be" to feature just some of our wonderful staff, who #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Abori...ginal &/or Torres Strait Islander person in their role here at St Vincent's. To start us off, meet Duran, the first Aboriginal Counsellor here at St Vincent's Alcohol & Drug Service. ********* I’m a proud Ngiyampaa man. Ngiyampaa are one of three Tribal groups that are the traditional owners of Lake Mungo, the site where the first human remains in Australia were discovered. I #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Aboriginal Counsellor based in the Stimulant Treatment Program (STP) and The Gorman Unit Detox at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. I joined St Vincent’s in 2017 in the newly established role in STP and the Gorman Unit. My role is to provide Counselling support for Aboriginal people who are seeking assistance to better manage or overcome their substance use issues. While working at St Vincents I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to co-create an Aboriginal Men's Smart recovery group with the hopes of being able to actively engage the local community to assist more people with their recovery journeys. The thing I enjoy most about my role is the ability to help people. Helping people is my passion and to be able to help people every day is a dream come true".

03.01.2022 Congratulations St Vincent's Private Community Hospital Griffith, we are looking forward to the years ahead!

03.01.2022 Richard is very pleased to have this research letter published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Oncology. It demonstrates the power of oncologists collaborating across multiple cancer sites. He particularly wants to thank A/Prof Richard Hillman and Dr Mary Poynton and the Kirby Institute SPANC study.

01.01.2022 Our NAIDOC Week staff profiles continue, this time with the one and only, Justin Dunn. Justin #alwayswasalwayswillbe the first Aboriginal Transport Officer at S...t Vincent's, here's his story. ***** "I’m a proud Bidjigal/Gadigal man from the La Perouse community. I #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe the first Aboriginal staff member to work in the Transport Department of St Vincents Public Hospital. I joined St Vincents in 2015 as a driver, transporting patients to other hospitals, appointments and private homes. This role has given me opportunities to travel all over NSW where I have had the pleasure of getting to know our patients during our travels together. During my time in St Vincent's, I have taken up professional development opportunities available to me to upskill and recently I was asked to take on the role of acting Manager of the Transport Department. The highlights of my role include working in a team that makes me feel welcomed and offers me a sense of belonging. I feel respected and acknowledged as an Aboriginal staff member and that we all respect each other’s cultures and background. I am learning more and more each year and I have made many friends along the way and know that we are all coming together for the one purpose. I have come to respect and appreciate the organisation that I work for, it has given me a job that I have grown into and knowing that they are committed to improving health outcomes and creating employment pathways for my mob".
