23.01.2022 In this final instalment of our "who's who in the aviary" - let me introduce you to the gentle, caring Dove. Harbinger of peace. In the world of therapy, there are SO many doves - we are the caring professions after all. It is our inner Dove, the part that cares for others, empathises, and works collaboratively that helps us do such great clinical work. As Private Practice owners, it can also be the part that derails our financial vi...ability and our capacity for self care. Peep under the profit and loss statement of a Dove's Private Practice and it may not be too healthy - fees not reviewed, no show fees not applied, a sliding scale that slides all the way back to pro bono work..... can all add up to many hours of work for very little profit. Because Doves can find it hard to make decisions that ask for money from others. Does this mean we have no compassion for those who come to see us and are struggling financially? Of course not. If we can bring our eagle and owl on board as well, they will help us develop a Fees Policy that allows us to enjoy a profitable Private Practice, whilst doing justice to our compassionate roots. It's all about balance after all. xxx #privatepractice #psychologist #therapist #socialwork #therapy #counsellor #counselling #mentalhealth #therapistlife #psychotherapy #sustainableprofit #birdtheory See more

22.01.2022 In the third of our "who's who in your aviary" series, let me introduce you to the gorgeous, confident peacock. In nature, peacocks are all about looking beautiful and strutting their stuff. In Private Practice, this translates to ensuring our marketing messages are curated to generate warmth and engagement. It is also the hutzpah that allows us to shine at networking, speak at events, deliver training and blow our own proverbial trumpet when needed. ... When part of a diverse aviary, the peacock is a great asset to help your Private Practice thrive. Left to her own devices however, she can be all about the image, and light on the content. So to ensure she doesn't steal the show but leave the audience disappointed, make sure she is clear about what she is delivering (channel some eagle!) and knows the detail (channel some owl!). Does your peacock come naturally, or do you have to don a cloak of imaginary peacock feathers to channel the confidence of this proud and beautiful bird? #privatepractice #psychologist #therapist #socialwork #therapy #counsellor #counselling #mentalhealth #therapistlife #psychotherapy #birdtheory See more

09.01.2022 Yoko's words are still powerful today, and reflect her understanding of the breadth of our imagination, the role of Self as part of a wider, universal scheme, the inherent dignity and worth of each human being, and voracious stand against the making of wars. She sounds like pretty much all the counsellors and therapists I know. Let's keep it up :) #privatepractice #psychologist #therapist #socialwork #therapy #counsellor #counselling #mentalhealth #therapistlife #psychotherapy #yokoono #endwar

08.01.2022 There is much hype about what constitutes a successful Private Practice, and - therefore - a successful Private Practice owner. At various times, I embraced success as having: - confidence in the outcomes for my clients - a full diary of clients... - a group practice - a team of sub-contracted therapists - a six figure regular income - a strong reputation in my referral networks... All of these were about 'having' and not so much about 'being'. Don't get me wrong, 'having' is important. I enjoy having a Private Practice that thrives and flourishes, lets me earn a great living doing the work I love and making a difference in people's lives. Being able to support a team of other psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists, art and play therapists to work in our group practice and build their own client caseloads. Being the 'go to' referral point for complex presentations because they know we can do justice to what the clients need. But this no longer defines success for me. Now success is more about 'being': being true to my values, being in each moment, being present with my partner and those I love, and being proud of the ripples of change I generate in people's lives that quietly and persistently make a difference. How do you define success? #privatepractice #psychologist #therapist #socialwork #therapy #counsellor #counselling #mentalhealth #therapistlife #psychotherapy #mindfulness #integrity #beyourself See more

02.01.2022 Some weeks are longer than others! This week felt like it had a Monday that went for 36 hours and an extra Tuesday somewhere. I'm pressing reset for today, and aiming to make it a good Thursday - with extra layers of self care and dog cuddles throughout. Hoping your Thursday is one where you can be gentle on yourself too xxx #privatepractice #psychologist #therapist #socialwork #therapy #counsellor #counselling #mentalhealth #therapistlife #psychotherapy #selfcare #supervision #buildyourteam #nearlyfriday
