25.01.2022 2021, the new year brings many exciting reasons for us to celebrate for us to celebrate our staff and share their beautiful experiences. Introducing Jillian Brennan, one of our lovely diagnostic clinicians! "My parents owned and operated a facility for 35 years. It was their combined life's work. They took this on when I was eight years old, and we lived as a family, mum and dad and five children, next door growing up. Mum and Dad continued to live onsite until the day the...y sold. As kids, we loved it, often visiting Mum or Dad when they were at work, and we got to know and love the residents, each with our own 'special residents' over the years. And the dog shared the love too all those residents to spoil him. It was not uncommon for Mum to be yelling out to one or more of us from the back steps at 6pm 'TEA TIME' to roust us up to come home. The facility was in a medium-sized country town where both my parents grew up. So they knew the large majority of their residents and families, some local friends and relatives too. We children all went on to work there as teenagers as bed makers. I don't think any of us liked it, but we had fun with the residents and staff and loved the morning tea of hot scones or pikelets. I fled the nest after school to do my nursing training at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane. Some years later, my parents needed some help, and I went back to work for them for what was to be ONE month and stayed for ten years! By then, I realised this was MY nursing specialty and have continued to work in this industry since. Interacting with the residents and hearing their life stories, experiences, and wisdom has to be top of the list. Our industry's ever-changing nature and the constant challenges this brings make for a very satisfying work environment. It is extremely rewarding, and you feel you are making a difference. We have an absolute wealth of knowledge and experience in our staff. Health Generation greatly values its employees. Staff wellbeing is top of the list, which ensures a happy, healthy and committed workforce. Certainly, that part I love most about working at Health Generation is the variety, experiencing various facilities in different locations, the travel component and constantly experiencing something new location, facility, staff, residents and processes. My fondest memory was from many years ago when I was reasonably new in aged care. I was about to go on annual leave and was going around to say goodbye to individual residents. One of the residents said to me in a delighted and bright manner, "I'm always on holiday". I was blown away by this and asked what she meant by this. She said, 'well, I don't have to cook or clean or wash or look after my house, my family takes care of my money, I am helped with everything I need here, and I am entertained every day. I love it."

25.01.2022 Celebrating '2020, Year of the Nurse & Midwife' Today we celebrate Krystell Harward, one of our Diagnostic Clinicians! When I first started in aged care 10 years ago, I was a new graduate straight out of University. I had convinced myself I was only going to be in the industry for a short period of time until I transferred into the hospital setting. When I was given the opportunity for a job in a hospital, I could not bring myself to leave all the wonderful residents that ...I had spent the previous months developing relationships with and calling my second family. It was this moment when I realised that I was in the right environment and had found my passion. I have built my career and experience working in varied roles including Clinical Nurse, ACFI Officer, Quality and Compliance Manager and Service Manager, my main purpose throughout these roles were to ensure that my residents were getting what they needed and the best possible outcome from me at such a fundamental time in their life. Although I have many happy experiences throughout my time, one recent moment that stands out is a male resident with advanced dementia who is unable to be understood effectively with staff and therefore would lash out physically due to frustration. This particular day after spending some one on one time with him he grabbed my arm to stop me and looked me straight in the eyes and said, I don’t mean it, then proceeded to walk off. It is these small moments that are the reason why I continue working in aged care as I know I am making an impact to the life of our elderly and it is a privilege. . . . . #agedcare #agedcareaustralia #acfi #journey #nursesofinstagram #nurseinaustralia #agedcarenurse #yearofthenurse

22.01.2022 Celebrating ‘2020, Year of the Nurse & Midwife’! Today we celebrate Ken Ly, one of our Clinical Services Team Leaders! "My journey in Aged Care has been a soul fulfilling experience. It started 6 years ago in Tamworth, a small town in the North Western region of New South Wales. I was young, fresh out of University, and eager to come at life without any particular direction. Things were never really clear in my head. Admittedly, I was aiming for a job in an Emergency Departme...nt and Aged care was not my first preference. Then, I started working as an RN in a small Aged care facility, which was home to ninety elderly residents. I quickly realised after a few weeks of my employment that, this is it. This is the health care setting that I want to spend my nursing career in. Working in a residential health care facility means that you get to see the residents for a longer period of time, unlike in the acute care setting where the patients usually get discharged after a much shorter duration. At first, the residents were my clients. They then slowly becoming my second family, together with my colleagues. We laughed together. We learned about World War II from the actual heroes, who were there. We were amazed at so many adventures from the former adventurers. We felt the sorrow from the used-to-be farmers recalling their crops being devastated by severe droughts in the distant past and we wiped our tears bidding goodbye to our second family members when they closed their eyes for the last time. Working in Aged care means we get to go home after our shifts feeling peaceful in our soul. Over the following years and after working in countless number of Aged care facilities, I still have that same feeling. The wisdom that I have learned from my residents is priceless to me. It has shaped me and set my life in a direction that I could not have possibly foreseen when I started 6 years ago in Tamworth. For that, I am extremely thankful. #agedcare #agedcareaustralia #yearofthenurse #nursing #agedcarenursing #nursesoffacebook #nursesrock

22.01.2022 Continuing on for our celebration of "2020, the year of the Nurse & Midwife". Everybody meet Regine Nochete, one of our Diagnostic Clinicians! "My aged care story is a happy accident. I used to think of it as a student exploring opportunities and seeking career growth, however the past 10 years taught me that I am actually where I should be. Aged care is an industry filled with people from different backgrounds driven by a strong passion to support the wellbeing of the elderl...y and maintain their dignity. Working within this community is an enriching experience for me personally and professionally. A happy story I always look back on is when I was part of a home since its construction, started working there with hard hats and visy vests on, helped commission the home and went through multiple visits and validations with positive experiences. It was a great place to work with happy and positive people that makes working feel less like work and more fun! There were many challenges, but it was the people and culture that made a difference in the journey! What inspires me to do my best at each engagement is the impact I have on the lives of the elderly as an advocate, whether through one case conference to get preferences right; one care directive implemented for pain relief or education sessions for staff. Little details can make a big difference".

21.01.2022 Celebrating '2020, year of the Nurse & Midwife'! Today we celebrate one of our Diagnostic Clinicians, Melanie Price! "I chose to work in Aged Care because of my grandparents. My love and adoration for them created a special bond between the elderly and myself. I have always been able to bring a smile to the face of an older person with each encounter since I was very young. I guess I have always felt that, they did so much for us that I wanted to give something back, no matte...r how small! I have many wonderful encounters over my time in aged care, but I will share a recent encounter that touched my heart. I had the pleasure of meeting a dear lady and we sat and chatted for some time while I gathered as much information as I could for her assessment. She wrote my name down as her memory is not quite what it used to be. As I left, I told her that I would be around for a while and if she wanted to see me again, all she had to do was ask. About a week later, I was with the Manager in her office and she received a call for me. This lady had called the Head Office to ask if she could speak to me. She was feeling anxious and wanted to talk to someone and remembered me. I went to see her immediately and we spoke for a while. She thanked me for coming and said she felt so much better. I was able to give a little something back and this made me feel good about what I do, I can still make a difference. #yearofthenurse #agedcare #agedcareaustralia #careisinthedetails #nurse #nursesofinstagram #nursesrock

19.01.2022 It's David Brown here, your local QLD Client Partner for Health Generation. I know there is a lot of noise out there, especially with the report being released from the Royal Commission and what’s great to see, is the commitment to positive changes within our industry from the Government. The reality is though, that ACFI isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon and expenses don’t cease, so it’s more important than ever to ensure the maintenance and continuity of your operational in...come. Quality and compliance are going to be under the microscope more than ever with the commitment to increased visits and I can confirm that with the amount of calls I have received in the last 48 hours requesting Compliance and Mock audits in preparation for this. However, the biggest priority out there is certainly around ACFI and organisations wanting to ensure there are no gaps in their funding, especially before any changes are made to the model moving forward. Yes, we have to start thinking and planning for the future, but that’s still not 100% clear at this stage, so I see no benefits in waiting, as ongoing costs wait for no one, so please don’t hesitate to contact me and let Health Generation support you with any funding, quality or educational needs you may have. Thank you!

17.01.2022 2021, the new year brings many exciting beginnings for Health Generation including some new additions to our family. Excited to introduce our implementation specialist, Julie Hughes! I have been a nurse for 35 years, working mainly across the areas of aged care and education. I first worked in aged care as an AIN in the early 1980’s, and still have vivid memories of the special residents I met during this time that have stayed with me; the things they shared with me about th...eir lives. Following completion of my training to become a registered nurse, I dipped in and out of the acute sector, including becoming a midwife in 2001. I have somehow always found my way back into aged care and have loved the opportunity to get to know and support so many wonderful people over the years. I’ve held various positions; mostly care governance and quality and management roles. Part of what has always motivated me is to be able to support and make a difference to the people at the forefront of assisting the elderly, the carers, lifestyle, hospitality, administration and maintenance staff, the whole team in general. I firmly believe in the value and importance of the contribution of each and every staff member. I have always loved upskilling, supporting and instilling the importance of the roles they perform in each and every staff member. Having the opportunity of working with the elderly and supporting them to enjoy their lives to the fullest is an honour and privilege. The simplest of things are what make this vocation so rewarding- the smiles, watching the residents doing what they love and enjoy and hearing their families say how much of a difference we make to the lives of their loved ones.

14.01.2022 Health Generation Presents... DRIVING BETTER OUTCOMES BEYOND THE PANDEMIC We need to stop shying away from the real truth of aged care.... Facilities getting access to the best possible funding and then sustaining that funding is the absolute key to longevity in this industry. The reality for us, however, is that even during these times our expenses don’t stop and our obligations in maintaining compliance to the standards don’t seize. In FY20, govt revenue was $485.2 billion, 3% of that was dedicated to Aged Care. This puts us in the lower 15% globally. The fact is this is a reflection on our industry not on the govt. The funding is there we are just massively under-claiming with 62% of facilities nationally currently operating at a loss. So what’s the way forward? Health Generation is proud to announce our webinar series "Driving Better Outcomes Beyond the Pandemic" with Kane Draper. 10.01.2022 Here at Health Generation, we’re proud of every one of our team members and we’re excited to introduce to you today our Occupational Therapist, James Khoury! I completed my Occupational Therapy degree in 2015, where my first job was working in primary schools. It was great being around 5 and 6 year-olds, constantly entertained by their jibbers and jabbers. Though, it was my brother, a physiotherapist working in aged care, who got me interested in changing fields. So off I we...nt to be around 95 and 96 year-olds. I was first excited about working in aged care for the opportunity to talk to the oldies, listening to their history and stories. Working in the industry for over three years implementing pain management and exercise programs, it has given me satisfaction knowing I am improving the quality of their long life. Not just on a fix the joints and muscles level, but even just by having a laugh and a yarn. I appreciate it as much as they do. Gladys was a resident I would see almost every day. She would apologise to a photo of her husband almost every day, for as she put it, I was the second man in her life to give her a massage. I introduced her to Google Maps (street view), where we found her old house in England from 70 years ago. She gave me a virtual tour, telling me all about her neighbours and childhood friends. It was a fun time, especially during the difficult times of 2020, where visitors were limited. Upon leaving that home, she made me give her my address so she could send a Christmas card to me every year. It’s the personal connection with people and these memories that Health Generation allows me to have and I am so grateful for that. . . . . . #agedcare #homecare #inhomecare #elderlycare #seniorcare #disability #agedcareaustralia #health #eldercare #healthcare #nurse #dementiacare #caregiving #mentalhealth #education #assistedliving #elderly #seniorliving #carers #australia #covid #retirement #nursing

07.01.2022 Celebrating '2020, Year of the Nurse & Midwife'! Today we celebrate Mark Nochete, one of our Diagnostic Clinicians! "I love working in Aged Care because it gives me a rewarding feeling looking after our elderly. Being an RN has unlimited career pathways, but for me, nothing is better than aged care. Working for Heath Generation allows me to fulfil my passion, to become a better clinician and strengthen my skills to be more equipped to look after our elderly. There was one par...ticular male resident at a previous engagement I worked at who was known to be difficult with the carers and key facility staff as he did not let the staff help him enjoy his stay at the facility. He has been refusing to cooperate when staff try to conduct assessments, help him with his cares and other ways to accommodate his care needs. I tried my never-failing contagious positive gentle approach and the Health Generation way to establish rapport and communicate with him and of course! It was unsurprisingly successful! I was able to gather his whole life history, all his preferences, his wishes to have in the facility and all other information to help my colleagues complete his care plans and assessments and especially to make his stay happy. So far, after my placement, he is still happy and enjoying his stay. It's been a great journey for me, travelling to various facilities, meeting different people who share the same passion that I have and working together to ensure the residents receive the best care they deserve." #yearofthenurse #agedcareaustralia #agedcare #careisinthedetails #nurse #nursesoffacebook #nursesrock

02.01.2022 Celebrating 2020, Year of the Nurse & Midwife! Keep reading the learn all about our Quality & Compliance Services Manager, Deb! "I had been a sales rep for a medical company for 5 years and really missed the resident interaction from my nursing days. I saw an advertisement for a Deputy Director of Nursing in a nursing home, applied and got the job. I have always loved the complexity of the aged person, they have so much wisdom and life experiences, there is always so much to ...learn from them and they love to chat and feel valued. Particularly from this current generation who have lived through wars and such dramatic changes in their lives and the world, which they have embraced. Every day with Health Generation for me is a good encounter, I love the fact that we are helping people achieve better outcomes for our residents and enhancing their quality of life. There is always the opportunity to spread the magic and change the way people see their jobs and encourage them to get the most from every day, no matter how challenging, there is always a piece of gold somewhere and I can always find the bit of gold and positive and encourage others to see it. This has a ripple effect and makes the every day person have a great day."

01.01.2022 Thoughts from our Mental Health Webinar "Do our Aged Care Leaders find it harder to ask for help?": Leadership We tend to underestimate our daily actions as an act of leadership. We celebrate significant events and big victories, but not necessarily how our small gestures could change the face of the world. Any daily action can change the world of a person who crosses our path. Once you recognise that ability that you have, life becomes a series of opportunities to lead. How ...do some of our most prominent leaders in the Aged Care industry today handle leadership? How do they ensure that they find the balance not to take on all the responsibility but still provide that direction to their team whilst they expected to lead in many areas?
