25.01.2022 RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED! Seeking anyone who has been affected by the 2019/2020 Australian Bushfires. Professor Kim Usher from the University of New England..., Armidale is leading a team who is addressing the impacts of the 2019/2020 bushfires on the mental health of those affected. The outcomes will be used to develop reports to send to governments and funding bodies as well; as prepare academic papers. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete and open to anyone across Australia affected by the fires in the past 12 months. All survey data will remain anonymous and only group findings will be reported. We thank you and appreciate your time. 24.01.2022 Researchers from the Drug Policy Modelling Program are looking for managers of AOD treatment services located in NSW, ACT and TAS to participate in a survey about the impact of COVID-19 on these services. The survey is part of a project co-led by Dr Katinka van de Ven, UNE Senior Lecturer in Criminology, specifically focusing on (1) the demand for treatment (e.g. numbers seeking help), (2) service delivery (e.g. changes in delivery modalities), (3) workforce (e.g. training ac...tivities) and (4) business practice (e.g. financial impact) for AOD treatment services. Rather than merely describing what has happened, the project will consider the implications of these impacts for: the NGO AOD treatment sector; service delivery modes; the funders of treatment; and the recipients of treatment. This research project has been commissioned by NADA, ATODA and ATDC to quantify and describe the impact of COVID-19 on the NGO AOD sector, in order to inform future planning and service delivery for NGO AOD services. 15.01.2022 Is autism really up to 4x more prevalent in boys than girls? Or are girls underdiagnosed? "I'm seeing women who have always had difficulties in life - trouble m...aking friends, been subject to bullying, or experienced periods of depression and anxiety - who have an autism disorder that wasn't picked up when they were young." Professor of Biomedical Science Vicki Bitsika believes current rates of autism in girls are grossly underestimated. She aims to establish clear criteria, symptoms and behaviours that are distinctive to girls. "Our findings have the potential to make life easier and more manageable for thousands of people," she says. "Autism, while classified as a disability, also entails unique abilities that are highly relevant to solving the societal problems we are grappling with. In this way, the research stands to have a great societal impact as well." #proudtobeUNE UNE Science UNE Health Autism Awareness Australia Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) https://okt.to/zHPoKt

09.01.2022 Studying from home before the internet - what would that have looked like? Long before Moodle and lecture recordings, UNE was offering distance education in a... different way. Most often, this looked like cassette tapes and mail-out assignments. This distance education goes as far back as the 1960s! Study content has always been the same for internal (on-campus) and external (distance) students, but the biggest change from the past 25+ years is how distance education looks. Rather than getting your study content on online platforms like Moodle, envelopes containing assignments, readings and texts were mailed to students, all across the country (and beyond). Back in the day, everything depended on mail delivery. The university would post your study resources to you and you were required to mail assignments and texts back to the library. As the ability of the external studies increased, so did what UNE could teach externally. Below you'll find an image of the 1977 external student cohort for Geology, who would have received rock samples in the mail as part of their external studies! Music and Languages students were sent cassette tapes and the university even experimented with radio broadcast. Images: The late Ron Ray holding the largest number of stamps ever received on a parcel returned by an external student (100 stamps to cover exact postage of $7.55); an assignment that was sent to external English students in 1970; the 1963 Externals Manilla Centre; and the 1977 external Geology cohort. 07.01.2022 Happy Monday!! Introducing our PASS Leader Sarah. Sarah is currently in her 3rd year, studying a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) and is a PASS Leader for PSYC10...2 in T2. Check out our Q&A below with Sarah, another example of the great leaders involved in the PASS@UNE Program. Q: What did you enjoy about studying the early PSYC units at UNE? The overview of each domain within psychology was eye opening, and validated my passion for the subject. Q: What does a PASS leader do? Facilitating student discussions, encouraging student participation, provide study support in the way of providing study tips. Introducing new, creative ways of learning & sharing available resources and providing peer support. Q: What are your top study tips and tricks for managing your study load? - Be kind to yourself, we are human, not robots. - Try summarising what you read every time you finish a topic/ section. - Use flash cards & online resources such as Kahoot/YouTube to consolidate your learning. - Use discussion forums to ask questions. Q: What is your favourite study break activity? I love staying active, so I enjoy a nice run on a sunny day, swimming, cross fit, catching up with friends over coffee, listening to music, some Netflix binging, and most recently spending time with my infant son. Q: How can a student go to you for help? I love to help people, it’s why I’m doing Psychology and why I’m a PASS leader, so students can directly contact me and I will endeavour to respond within 24 hours, Monday -Friday or ask to speak to me at the end of our PASS session, or log in fifteen minutes before the PASS session to ask me any questions outside the group. Q. Have you ever struggled through the trimester or in a particular subject? What advice would you give other students who might find some subjects or trimesters tough? I have found some topics more difficult than others, for different reasons. For example, Biopsychology was heavy in content, whereas Cognitive Psychology has some complex theories. For the subjects you are finding difficult, know that you are not alone & it is likely there are other students equally struggling. Speak to your Unit Coordinator; ask how best to approach the unit, also- read the unit guide. I have found time management is key so try to schedule a time every week where you can read a chapter, and another time to do some research/ work on your assignment. Set blocks dedicated to particular areas, this way you can stay focused on the task and not get distracted or demotivated by the various different tasks to do. It is also important to seek social support- reach out to other students in your subjects, speak to the academic faculty, and speak to Academic Support Office for study tips. Q. Can you recommend any UNE resources you have used during your studies? - ASO (Academic Skills Office) is helpful. - The UNE Library - ASKUNE If you’re studying PSYC102, pencil in a PASS session & come along! For any further enquires, students can contact the PASS team at [email protected] or via PASS@UNE Moodle. School of Health, University of New England
