24.01.2022 Restoring healthy cholesterol levels could be as simple as restoring vitamin B12 levels. B12 deficiency has been directly linked to the increased expression of a number of genes involved in cholesterol biosynthesis, when compared to B12-replete controls. Not only did this result in a higher total cholesterol level, those with low levels of this essential vitamin also had significantly higher BMI, triglyceride and homocysteine readings, putting them at even greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

23.01.2022 Did you know Skin is the biggest in the largest organ in the body? It functions to eliminate toxins, regulate body temperature and protect the inside of the body from potential invading micro-organisms. The body literally sheds millions of skin cells every day and completely replaces itself roughly every 27 days. This means that if you improve the factors that are contributing to your skin problems, then dramatic improvements to your skin should start to be see within just one to two months. 21.01.2022 Adding avocado to your salads and dips doesnt just make them taste delicious, it may also help to eradicate leukaemia cells. According to researchers at the University of Waterloo, a lipid present in avocados, Avocatin B, selectively targets and destroys human leukaemia stem cells, without harming any healthy blood cells. The novel molecule was found to preferentially accumulate within the mitochondria of leukaemia cells, essentially starving them and promoting cellular apoptosis (a form of programmed cell death). Currently, there are no therapies for leukaemia that possess the same unique ability to seek and destroy cancer cells specifically, so the researchers are intending to file a patent for the impressive avocado compound. 20.01.2022 Who are You Nutritionally? Each of us has innate biochemical factors which influence personality, behaviour, mental health, immune function, allergic tendencies, etc. Scientists tell us that the number of different genetic combinations possible in a child from the same two parents exceeds 42 million. Its interesting to note that we do not possess a combination of characteristics from our parents, but instead have a diverse collection of characteristics from many ancestors ...on both sides of the family. Because of genetic differences in the way our bodies process foods, most of us are quite deficient in certain nutrients and overloaded in others. Even with an ideal diet, most of us have certain nutrients that are at very low levels with many times the RDI required to achieve a healthy balance. The nutrients in overload must be carefully avoided in vitamin supplements or serious health problems can develop. After studying the biochemistry of 10,000 people, weve learned that the greatest mischief is usually caused by nutrients that are stored in excessive amounts, rather than those at depleted levels. The most common nutrients in overload include copper, iron, folic acid, calcium, methionine, manganese, choline, and omega-6 fatty acids. Of course, the same nutrients may be in deficiency in other people. Each of us should ask the question Who am I nutritionally?. The answer to this question is important for all, but may be especially critical for people with mental health problems. Ref: Fx Medicine Summer 2020 Vol 95 pg 15

19.01.2022 Even short term administration of antibiotics (ABs) in infancy can lead to long term metabolic changes, though it is partly dependent on drug class. Authors of work published in Natures Communications aimed to replicate the impact of the two antibiotic classes most commonly prescribed to children on the microbiome of mouse pups. They found that both macrolide and beta-lactam antibiotic classes produce changes in microbiota diversity that remain for months after their discontinuation. This produced long-lasting systemic metabolic consequences altering carbohydrate metabolism, hepatic gene expression and reducing bone density. The macrolide-based AVs had the most impact, which could suggest increased intensity of counteractive therapies such as pre-and pro-biotics in children prescribed these medications. REF METAGENICS

19.01.2022 Causes of Skin Conditions Skin problems are rarely the result of one single factor. The skin is a reflection of the health of your internal environment. There are often many things to consider when managing a skin condition. Some examples can include:... - If your digestion and detoxification systems are not functioning properly, your skin will suffer. - If your stress levels are high, then the inflammation this causes can become visible through the skin. - If your circulation and/or lymphatic systems are congested then your skin will reflect this. - Finally, if your diet contains too many junk foods and/or is lacking in certain nutrients then your skin will let everyone know you are not feeding your body what it needs. 15.01.2022 Workplace Burnout In 1974, the phrase burnout was coined to describe the consequences of severe or prolonged stress and anxiety experienced by working professionals. Freudenberg, an American psychologist, suggested that working professionals high standards and the need to repeatedly self-sacrifice, places them at high risk for job-induced emotional and physical exhaustion. Professionals most commonly prone to burnout issues are usually dedicated, conscientious, responsibl...e, motivated, idealistic and perfectionists and will often experience the following traits: - Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion.- - Increased mental distance from ones job, or feelings of negativity or cynicism related to ones job. - Reduce professional efficacy. Hard work never killed anyone, but it never hurts to look after yourself while youre doing it ...especially for the long term good of your health! Ref: Fx Medicine Summer 2020 Vol 95 pg 13

14.01.2022 Prevent Pregnenolone Steal A common explanation for the depletion of DHEA and other hormones (e.g., progesterone, testosterone) due to chronic stress is the phenomenon known as "Pregnenolone Steal. While you might think progesterone replacement therapy would be the fix for Pregnenolone Steal, its not the best solution. Instead, reduce stress factors and support the bodys response to stress.... Each person has unique stressors in their life, and not all can be eliminated. However, its very helpful to take an honest look at what stress factors exist in yours, and to decide which you can eliminate and which you can only reduce. Then commit to making those changes. While some of these changes might be relatively easy, such as reducing the number of activities in your life, others might be difficult to make, such as leaving a bad job. So do the best you can, strategise coping mechanisms for the lifestyle stressors you cant eliminate (make sure to include regular time in your life just for you), and work on reducing stressors in the body. 12.01.2022 A mother's mental wellbeing modifies her children's DNA, affecting their behavior and potentially causing them to age more rapidly. A recent study found that maternal depression is associated with shorter telomere length in young children, which in turn, was linked to children exerting defiant behavior and anxiety. What's more, previous studies have established strong associations between shorter telomere length and reduced longevity. Stressed mums are therefore stressing their children's genes, highlighting the importance of keeping mothers happy to improve their children's behavior while they are young, and their long-term health into the future. 12.01.2022 The addition of a small dose of Coenzyme Q10 can achieve big benefits in patients already taking some form of heart medication. A randomised trial involving 128 adults being treated for heart failure with ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, statins and/or other medications found those who were supplemented with a modest 30mg of CoQ10 daily had lower levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers and subsequently reduced incidence of atrial fibrillation when assessed at one year. The authors concluded that CoQ10 is a safe and valuable adjuvant for medicated patients with heart failure, which also attenuates the drivers underlying cardiovascular disease. 11.01.2022 Filling up on folate-rich foods may offset migraines, especially in those with genetic defects in folate metabolism. People with the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene variant C677T have been shown to have greater risk of migraine with aura. However, when 141 Australian women carrying the genetic polymorphism who suffered severe migraines were monitored for six months, researchers found the more folate they consumed, the less frequent or severe their migraine became. Dont want to be incapacitated by a migraine? Consider eating more leafy green vegetables. Ref Metagenics Update Oct/Nov 2015 pg 7

09.01.2022 Dads Diet may have lasting effect on babys health Whilst the effect a mothers diet has on her children has been studied extensively, a fathers diet and its impact on the long-term health of their children is poorly represented. An animal study sought to study how paternal health and wellbeing at the time of contraception impacts the long-term cardiometabolic health of their offspring.... In this study, male mice were fed a poor quality low protein diet and found it impaired the way blood vessels functioned in their offspring, a key indicator of heart disease. The findings indicated a fathers diet may alter genetic information carried in the sperrn or the composition of the seminal plasma and a fathers diet at the time of conception may affect how the blood vessels work, resulting in programmed impaired cardiovascular health in his offspring. A significant observation of this study was the changes in angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity that manifested in offspring tissue and serum from as early as three weeks of age. This suggests a poor paternal diet programs renin-angiotensin system (RAS) homeostasis during early life. Therefore, a disruption of the testicular epigenetic status could provide a mechainism through which paternal transgenerational programming could occur. Ref: FX Medicine Summer 2020 Vol 95 pg 4

08.01.2022 Toy manufacturer Asmund Laerdal from Norway was approached to develop a doll to demonstrate CPR and, having saved his 2-year old son from nearly drowning, he was keen to be involved in the project. He started work on making a realistic, life-sized manikin that could be used to successfully demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He thought a female doll would be less intimidating to students, so he named the doll Anne after one of his most popular toy dolls. He also wante...d the CPR doll to have a face with a natural and realistic appearance, believing that people would be more receptive to the training. He chose LInconnue to be the face of his training doll and Resuscitation Annie was born! Who was LInconnue? According to legend, the body of a young woman was pulled from the river Seine in Paris in the late 1880s, suspected of drowning herself. The woman was never identified, and her mysterious, half-smiling face entranced a pathologist working at the mortuary so much that he had a plaster cast made of her face. She became known as LInconnue de la Seine, or The unknown woman of the Seine, and her face ended up on mantelpieces and in living rooms everywhere. Ref: The face of CPR Royal Life Saving

05.01.2022 Different Types of Binding Agents Bentonite is a type of porous clay with a crystal structure and a cation-covered surface which gives the clay its adsorptive capacity. Organochlorine pesticides and the herbicide paraquat are know to accumulate in the tissue and be highly toxic to humans. Bentonite clay has been found, in studies, to adsorb and prevent the harm of pesticide and herbicide toxicity. Activated Charcoal has a large surface area and is highly porous, with acti...vation of charcoal further increasing its surface area and therefore its adsorption capability - making it a potent binder. A number of studies has show that it has a high binding affinity for a range of mycotoxins, preventing their intestinal absorption, thus making it a useful mycotoxin-sequesting agent. Chitosan is a cationic polysaccharide structurally simliar to cellulose. As chitosan is partially hydrolysed (to break down a compound by chemical reaction with water) by digestive enzymes in the stomach it reacts with hydrochloric acid and forms a gel which attracts negatively charged particles, particularly lipids and bile acids. Acacia Gum is a branched-chain polysaccharide that has been show to induce toxin elimination and detect pathogens for removal. This gum has also been demonstrated **in vivo to reduce oxidative stress and DNA injury. Due to its classification as a prebiotic fibre, acacia gum positively influences the bacteria of the microbiome, specifically increasing bifidobacterium and lactobacillus, whcih in turn increases production of butyrate, a short chain fatty acid well known for its anti-inflammatory effects in the GIT. *Adsorption is the adhesion of atoms, ions or molecules from a gas, liquid or dissolved solid to a surface. This process creates a film of the adsorbate on the surface of the adsorbent. This process differs from absorption, in which a fluid is dissolved by or permeates a liquid or solid, respectively. **Studies that are in vivo are those in which the effects of various biological entities are tested on whole, living organisms or cells, usually animals, including humans, and plants, as opposed to a tissue extract or dead organism REf: FX Medicine Summer 2020 Vol 95 pg 23

02.01.2022 The Army Within Your immune system is your bodys department of defence. Your immune system protects you from potentially harmful invaders by recognising and responding to them as a threat. When the immune system is functioning well, it acts like a powerful, well-regulated army. It consists of several highly specialised types of white blood cells, much the same way an army is made up of many different specialty divisions. But what is your defences are weakened? If your ...immune system is struggling, then you will get sick more often and take longer to recover. Factors that can contribute to the weakening of your immune system can include: Physiological, psychological and emotional stress Lack of exercise (or too much exercise if over-training!) Lack of sleep, rest and relaxation Diet low in fresh fruit, vegetables and lean protein sources Exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke and/or extremely cold weather can also contribute to a lowered immune system. 01.01.2022 Skin Care - More than Lotions! There are a number of things you can do to improve the health of your skin You are what you eat (and drink!) - The skin is one of the first places to show the effects of a poor or inappropriate diet. A poor diet leads to nutritional deficiencies as well as inflammation, lowered immunity and is one major contributing factor to skin complaints.... Be Active - Exercise is an extremely important element for creating healthy skin. Exercise helps the skin remove toxins through sweating. as well as being anti-inflammatory! So make daily exercise part of your skin health program today. Maximise Skin Nutrition - Nutrients such as zinc, fish oils and vitamin D are all important for skin integrity as well as for immune function. Deficiencies in these nutrients have been shown to impact on skin conditions. Maintain Healthy Bowel Flora - Adequate good bowel flora (or good bacteria) is essential for healthy skin. Bowel flora is important for proper immune function and digestion, to prevent constipation and microbial overgrowth of the skin and digestive system. Keep Your Bowels Regular - If you are constipated and not removing toxins from your body via the bowel, toxins can be re-absorbed back into your system. This can aggravate skin conditions. Herbal formulas containing ginger, cinnamon, German chamomile, cascara and Chinese rhubarb have been show to be beneficial in improving constipation and sluggish digestion. Always consult your Health Practitioner first! Aim For Better Stress Management - Stress causes inflammation, digestive dysfunction, depletes the immune system, destroys bowel flora and leads to nutritional deficiencies, all of which are contributing factors to poor skin health. Regular Detoxification - Your body has five major channels of elimination - the skin, bowel, kidneys, lymphatic system and lungs. If any of these systems are not working to their greatest potential, the other systems are forced to work harder to remove the toxins that the body is trying to eliminate. In many cases, congestion in one of these systems is expressed via the skin in the forms of acne, dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis. Always consult your Health Practitioner before commencing any detoxification program! Topical Creams - To help improve your symptoms, natural creams containing Natural Medicines, essential oils and nutrients can help to fight skin infections, reduce skin inflammation and promote healing. Your Health Practitioner can assist you in choosing the best combination for your skin. Ref: Metagenics Supporting Healthy Skin Leaflet
