17.01.2022 SOMETHING TO CONSIDER DURING THESE TIMES: even small changes that introduce greater variability into the physical or mental routine can help (e.g., a walk around the block (with a mask of course), changing your route to the shop) A new study has found that new and diverse experiences are linked to enhanced happiness, and this relationship is associated with greater correlation of brain activity. The researchers noted that "Our results suggest that people feel happier when th...ey have more variety in their daily routines--when they go to novel places and have a wider array of experiences ... The opposite is also likely true: positive feelings may drive people to seek out these rewarding experiences more frequently ... Collectively, these findings show the beneficial consequences of environmental enrichment across species, demonstrating a connection between real-world exposure to fresh and varied experiences and increases in positive emotions". The researchers, who conducted the study prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, acknowledged that current public-health guidelines and restrictions pose limits on movement. However, they noted that even small changes that introduce greater variability into the physical or mental routine, such as exercising at home, going on a walk around the block, and taking a different route to go to a store, may potentially yield similar beneficial effects. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41593-020-0636-4 See more

10.01.2022 "We may now be entering the dreaded third quarter of hollow-eyed stares, odd fixations and brooding resentment. Time grows sludgy ... But there's also some good news... [Research has] found that those who have been through a period of isolation value the experience for what it has taught: They have a better idea of their personal values, and they're more committed to acting on them... men become less insular and women become more confident."
