22.01.2022 Canberra PCYC won our $10,000 grant for their project to get young people physically active with bike rides around town. In addition to getting them physically active, the project provides young people with positive role models. Canberra PCYC used the grant to buy bicycles for the project, and so far have had around 100 people participating each week! 13-year-old participant: It helped me engage with other kids after being locked up for so many months, the riding thro...ugh the hills were the best. Adult participant: The staff were great I don’t get out very often or exercise and it helped with my breathing. I had my health check prior and they really took it steady with me not being on a bike since I was young. 9-year-old participant: I don’t have friends at school, but I now have a group of new friends and can’t wait to go for ride with them. It was a normal day when Claude was driving home from work on the freeway and lost consciousness, crashing his car - luckily, no one was hurt. But this scary incident led him to find out he had accelerated heart disease and was at risk of having a cardiac event at any moment. He was 37 years old. ... Since that day, Claude has been an inspiration for many young people with heart disease. He openly shares his story, advice, experiences, and struggles. Claude volunteers his time and expertise and is always selflessly helping and supporting others. We are so lucky to have someone like Claude and want to acknowledge and thank him today on International Men’s Day. Wise words from Claude: "I don’t believe heart disease at my age should define who I am or restrict how I think or feel. I have many things to look forward to..... I hope by sharing my story with others who are going through a similar experience, they can take some comfort that life does not stop at diagnosis. Yes it’s a BIG change. But depending on how you choose to view it, life becomes more precious and magnificent." Claude met Goran and Marcus through the Heart Foundation's Supporting Young Hearts program. Because SCAD mostly affects women with few traditional risk factors, awareness of and quick response to the warning signs of a heart attack is important advice for all women. If not diagnosed and treated quickly, SCAD may lead to a heart attack or life-threatening arrhythmias.

Cook: 25mins Prep: 25mins Serves: 6... INGREDIENTS: 1 cup buckwheat 2 carrots, peeled, grated 2 Lebanese cucumbers, halved, deseeded, chopped 1 yellow capsicum, cut into thin strips 1 red onion, halved, thinly sliced 1 red apple, cut into matchsticks 100g chopped kale leaves 1 cup fresh mint leaves cup pecans, toasted, roughly chopped Dressing: 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons honey 2 teaspoons curry powder METHOD: 1. Bring 1 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add the buckwheat and reduce heat. Simmer, covered for about 10 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Stand covered 10 minutes. 2. Spread buckwheat over a large plate to cool. 3. Transfer buckwheat to a large bowl. Add carrot, cucumber, capsicum, onion, apple, kale, mint, and pecans. 4. To make the dressing, whisk all ingredients in a small jug. Add to salad and toss well. TIPS: For a delicious nutty flavour, stir raw buckwheat in a dry frying pan over a medium-high heat for 5-8 minutes or until it smells toasted and is lightly browned. Cool, then continue with step 1. Replace kale with baby spinach leaves, if preferred. To toast pecans, spread over an oven tray and cook in an 180C oven for 5 to 7 minutes until fragrant and a darker shade of brown.

07.01.2022 Each year, more than 300,000 Aussie school kids take part in the Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart program. Every one of them is special but nine-year-old Alano Huang is more inspiring than most. Alano lives in the Perth suburb of Willetton and goes to the Rostrata Primary School. The Year 4 student has a degenerative muscular disease that restricts his mobility. He gets around using a motorised scooter. When Alano learned his school was doing the Jump Rope program... this term, he was initially hesitant to get involved. As well as learning how to skip and logging their skipping time, participants are encouraged to raise funds for the Heart Foundation and Alano felt it wouldn’t be right to ask family and friends for donations if he wasn’t actually skipping. Alano’s educational assistant approached the school’s Jump Rope for Heart coordinator, PE teacher Brendan Burke, about ways Alano could take part in the program. We figured out that if Alano timed it just right, he could zip through a long rope being turned by two people. We also found a way he could ‘skip’ on his own with a shorter rope, Mr Burke said. Since then, there’s been no stopping Alano. He skips throughout recess and lunch, as well as during Middle School sports. He has been updating me daily on his skipping and fundraising. He is really excited that he can contribute to this great cause, and it is so inspiring to watch his progress. Together, the school have logged over 430 hours of skipping and raised more than $11,000 for the Heart Foundation!
