23.01.2022 Team effort for AILA award HAA were recently advised by our client, the Parramatta Park Trust, that we were part of an award winning team in this years Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (NSW) awards. The Plan of Management and Conservation Management Plan, known as Your Parramatta Park 2030, won two NSW Awards of Excellence in the Land Management and Cultural Heritage categories.... Written using a team model, the Plan of Management and Conservation Management Plan integrated the different disciplines of hydrology, soil management, aboriginal history and significance both pre and post invasion, and European history and significance. The Plan sets goals for the next decade to ensure the Park remains protected and preserved for current and future generations. AILA jurys citation said the Plan successfully integrates a culturally significant 85-hectare landscape spanning Cumberland Plain Woodland, the Parramatta River, open grasslands, sporting fields and heritage structures no easy task. The Parramatta Park 2030 Plan is a rare breed of documentation - informative, educative, practical and accessible, judges said. Deserving of an Award of Excellence the jury found the joint plans to be an easily digestible guide for park users in the ongoing care and development of a much loved and important city green space. The plan is available on the Parramatta Park website.

21.01.2022 The Nagle Library at St Johns College has been shortlisted in the 2019 Heritage Awards for the category of Continuing Tradition. As the library, consisting of a study centre and the adjoining Philosophical Room, is located in the original library location of the 1858 plans it sits well in this category as a project which continues tradition through new design, construction and development. Opened in November 2018, the new study centre is popular with the students, providing them with an airy and light environment accessible at all hours. It enables them to work in groups, pairs or individually. The awards winners will be announced at the National Trust Heritage Awards luncheon to be held in on 10 May. 20.01.2022 Women Speaking - empowering professional women to speak with confidence and strength. A great workshop by Catherine McGrath Media.

20.01.2022 Congratulations to Hector!

19.01.2022 For those interested, this was the state of Victoria Cottage before HAA got to work.

19.01.2022 HAA's new colour scheme for the exterior of the Leichhardt Town Hall has received many compliments. Now we are starting work on transforming the interior. This week scaffolding was erected in the main hall to allow Hector and Olivia to take paint scrapes and inspect the ceiling. They discovered there have been a lot of different colours used over the years, with a particular liking for green.

18.01.2022 When HAA knows the end of the year is approaching ...

18.01.2022 It's been a long time in the making, but HAA's restoration work on Reid House is nearly finished.

18.01.2022 The extension to the tower of HAAs Glebe project has been completed. The tower will house a staircase to provide better access to the fourth storey of the house. A side benefit is that the windows in the tower now allow sunshine to flood the upper floors. #haa #glebehouses #homeconstruct

17.01.2022 Our work on Leichhardt Town Hall has been rewarded! Congratulations to all involved - Inner West Council, the builders and HAA’s team for the job - Hector , Olivia and Brianna. #heritageawards #nationaltrust

17.01.2022 Scrolling up the stairs

17.01.2022 It was great to be part of this team. Congratulations to Cox Architecture, Tim Williams Architects and John Lampros Architects.

16.01.2022 Best wishes for a happy and safe Christmas from all of us at Hector Abrahams Architects. Our office will be closed from close of business 21 December 2018 and will re-open on 2 January 2019. It's been a busy year, with lots of interesting and challenging projects. These twinkling stars were part of our work on the St John's College library and Philosophical Room.

14.01.2022 Hands on architects There is nothing quite like doing something yourself to improve your understanding of the process, materials and any complications that might occur. For this reason, HAA is always supportive of our architects taking up hands-on opportunities. Jennifer Castaldi has just returned from a week long masterclass on roofing, roof plumbing repair and reproduction methods run by the Longford Academy During the week, Jennifer built a rainwater head, barge flashing ...and gutters out of galvanised sheet metal, and was also shown the process for installing these items. Templates were used to cut the shapes out of the sheet which were rolled and folded then soldered together to form the items. Once completed, a scaffold was erected and the barge flashing was installed to protect the new barge capping northern end of the woodshed. Held at the World Heritage listed Woolmers Estate outside Launceston, the Longford Academy provides training in conservation and traditional repair techniques for tradespeople and others involved in the care of old buildings. The maintenance of these methods and an appreciation of the traditional materials are important as modern construction practices and materials are often incompatible to the existing structure and increase the risk of further damage.

14.01.2022 Looking for something different to do while you are social distancing? Why not register for this zoom talk being given on the Sir John Monash Centre next Tuesday to be given by Tim Williams? Tim worked with Cox Architecture, Hector Abrahams Architects and John Lampros Architects in the design collaboration for this award winning interpretation centre at the Australian National Memorial in France. In his role as site architect, Tim lived in France for three years during the construction. His previous presentations on the SJMC have been very informative and interesting.

13.01.2022 HAA offers more than heritage advice

12.01.2022 HAA is enjoying using our new meeting room table. It was designed by Olivia, one of our architects, with input from furniture design studio, So Watt, who also made the table. The top is made from silky oak with a subtle black resin groove, finished with Osmo Polyx Oil. The base is black powder coated steel.

12.01.2022 HAA has received a High Commendation in this years Marrickville Medal for Conservation for the work undertaken on Leichhardt Town Hall. The work on the exterior of this local landmark included substantial restoration and conservation work, as well as new lighting and colour scheme. We enjoyed working with the project team at Inner West Council and the building contractors who all contributed to the final result. The jury gave the following citation The conservation and repa...ir works to the external fabric of the 1880s Victorian neoclassical Leichhardt Town Hall are exemplary and have been carried out to a high standard, and they follow the process of research & analysis before decision making. The Town Hall is a local landmark and a significant and prominent civic building at the corner of Norton and Marion Street in Leichhardt. The new stone-coloured paint scheme that has been implemented, based on an understanding of the historic colour schemes, interprets the historic schemes to accentuate the architectural modelling of the building and enhance its street presence. The reconstruction of the window to the former library returns an important detail to the elevation fronting Marion Street which has been missing for over half a century. Other conservation work included repair works to windows, clock faces, foundation stone and to the tower and roof finials. New external lighting has been installed. The project demonstrates a strong collaboration between client, heritage architect and builder, who set up a joinery repair shop on site to carry out the works. 12.01.2022 Another award for the Parramatta Park 2030 report HAA was involved in producing. Great teamwork and outcomes for one of the iconic parks of the Sydney area.

11.01.2022 Yesterday, the NSW Independent Planning Commission refused the development of the Bylong Valley coalmine. The decision allows this beautiful valley to be retained unscathed. At the request of the Heritage Council, Hector Abrahams Architects wrote an assessment both of the landscape and the impact of the proposed mine on the landscapes cultural and heritage values. Godden McKay Logan also wrote a report for the Commission on heritage impact giving similar arguments. In their ...ruling the Independent Planning Commission concluded, The Project is not in the public interest because it is contrary to the principles of ESD (ecologically sustainable development) namely intergenerational equity because the predicted economic benefits would accrue to the present generation but the long-term environmental, heritage and agricultural costs will be borne by the future generations. 11.01.2022 Perfect tiling in a bathroom at our Potts Point job being built by Alvaro Bros Master Builders. Top quality work and beautiful tiles.

11.01.2022 Down the street and around the corner - HAA is moving to a new workspace.

09.01.2022 One of the delights of HAA's work is having the opportunity to research forgotten gems. These buildings in Chinatown contain a treasure trove of the history of early Chinese migration and economic activity in Sydney. You can read more about this fascinating place on our website https://haarchitects.com.au/proj/82-84-dixon-street-sydney/

08.01.2022 The ticking of a town hall clock was heard and seen up close this week.

08.01.2022 This is the building that won the Marrickville Medal for Conservation https://haarchitects.com.au/a-ruin-restored/

07.01.2022 The extension to the tower of HAA’s Glebe project has been completed. The tower will house a staircase to provide better access to the fourth storey of the house. 07.01.2022 One of our builders has won a Master Builders' award for the reworking of a an old terrace designed by HAA. Congratulations to Adam and the team at Souter Built. The house looks terrific!

07.01.2022 All of us at HAA wish you a happy Christmas and safe New Year. Our office will be closed from COB on 24 December and will re-open on 6 January 2020. To finish off a great year, we are excited to launch our new website. If you have some time over the holiday period, why not have look.

05.01.2022 Many of HAA's people were involved in the work at 31 Bligh Street - the home of Lowy Institute. The opportunity to work on an historic building in the Sydney CBD doesn't present itself very often.

05.01.2022 Some more good news for HAA in this busy awards season.

04.01.2022 Photos of one of our projects which transformed a wreck into a lovely home. https://haarchitects.com.au/a-ruin-restored/

04.01.2022 We love a good slate roof at HAA, and here is another one that we are working on - this time at the Kogarah School of Arts.

04.01.2022 Its been an exciting afternoon for HAA today at the Inner West Council Built Environment Awards. Our entry, Victoria Cottage, won the Marrickville Medal for Conservation. Congratulations to project architect, Brianna Jessup, who oversaw the project which brought a derelict house back to being a family home.Sadly, our clients werent able to join us, but Daniel Rose from the builders Gartner Rose was there to celebrate with Hector and Brianna.

03.01.2022 The work at Reid House continues apace ... the foyer, the awning and now the shopfronts.

03.01.2022 If you are looking for something to do this Sunday afternoon, Hector is giving the Annual Heritage Lecture at St Mark's Anglican Church in Hunters Hill. He will be speaking on The Work of Blacket and Sons. After Edmund T Blacket died in 1883, his work was continued by his sons Cyril and Arthur under the name of Blacket and Sons. In 1949 the English church architect Sir Charles Nicholson wrote of Blacket that he must have kept abreast of the Gothic Movement, and have had g...reat natural talent as well. Keeping abreast was the interest of the later practice as carried on by his two sons Arthur and Cyril. Hector will examine their work, which includes St Paul's College, work at St Andrew's Cathedral and lovely smaller parish churches. There is also a musical presentation on the church's historic Kinloch Organ to be given by Philip Reichardt, Director of Music in the Anglican Parish of Hunters Hill. The program starts at 2.30pm this Sunday, and there is a cost of $20. The photo is of St Peter's, East Maitland, designed by Cyril and Arthur Blacket.

02.01.2022 HAA are running a series of workshops on caring for heritage listed churches. Why not join us!

01.01.2022 The annual NSW AIA Architecture Awards are being announced tomorrow night. Like so many events at the moment, it will be live-streamed instead of the usual dinner and celebration. HAA won't win an award because we didn't enter any projects this year. However as Hector was on the jury for the Heritage category, we will be watching with interest to see which entries impressed. #architectureawards #AIA

01.01.2022 We were thrilled to receive a Commendation in the Heritage category of the 2019 Australian Institute of Architects, NSW Chapter awards for the St Johns Library. Thanks to the college for allowing us to enter the work, and to Gartner Rose who built it! Photo by Chris Shain. #AIAawards #heritage

01.01.2022 Have a look at this fabulous drone footage of the new roof on the gatehouse at Admiralty House. It formed part of the overall work planned and overseen by HAA to restore and improve the amenity of the access point to the residence. The images show the high level of craftsmanship of the roofers, Slate Roofing Australia, as well as the beauty of Welsh Penryn slate. #craftsmanship #penrynslate #slateroofing
