24.01.2022 The Law of Reverse Effect Have you ever found yourself doing exactly what you don’t want to do? You have even told yourself not to do it. I’m not going to get upset this time when I talk to my boss. I don’t want to smoke when I visit Sally this time. Even though you have repeatedly told yourself not to, it is exactly what you end up doing. Let’s talk about smoking and Sally. She’s my childhood friend. We smoked together as teenagers. Moved into a flat together after we fi...nished school and of course we smoked inside because it was our place and we can do whatever we want. Anyway, I’ve moved away from my childhood town, but for a long time when I went back for family events I would catch up with Sally and that would be the end of whatever attempt I was making at quitting smoking. I would say to myself over and over before I went home I don’t want to smoke when I visit Sally but what I’m picturing in my head is us sitting out the back of her place catching up, laughing, drinking wine and smoking. And you can guess what happened every time I visited her exactly what I had pictured. So why did this happen? Even when I REALLY didn’t want to take up smoking again. Well let’s have an example. I don’t want you to think of a pink elephant with purple spots. Please DO NOT think of a pink elephant with purple spots. You can’t not think of it. In fact, the harder you try not to think of the elephant the more you are. This is the law of reverse effect in action. The law of reverse effect basically says that when there is a conflict between what you are saying to yourself and what you are picturing in your head, what you are picturing in your head always wins. Sometimes it helps not to have a don’t in what you are telling yourself. For our example about the elephant. When I said I don’t want you to think about a pink elephant with purple spots your mind has to think about it and picture it to then try to not think about it, which is a loop that just leaves you picturing the elephant every time. A solution to this is to think in more positive terms. For example, instead of I’m not going to get upset when I talk to my boss we might change it to I’m going to go

13.01.2022 REWIRE YOUR BRAIN WITH GRATITUDE Imagine how wonderful life would be, how happy you would be, if everywhere and in every moment you could find something to be grateful for. We have billions of bits of information coming at us every millionth of a second. Of course, we can’t be consciously aware of all of it because it will be overwhelming. Our brain filters the information coming in through a set of rules (our beliefs) and how much we prioritise those beliefs, so that we not...ice what's important. You probably are aware if you are a glass half full or half empty type of person. This is a rule your brain filters information through, so you are more likely to see the good in things or the bad in things. We can reprogram ourselves to see the good things all around ourselves. Sparking off warm fuzzy feelings inside of us all day long. Gratitude is the practice of being Grateful. It actually takes practice. But fortunately, the more you do something the better you get at it. This is because the more you practice gratitude the stronger the connections get in your brain, the more priority your brain gives to the rule to notice things you could be grateful for and the more natural it becomes to see the world that way. So, grab yourself a notebook and make a new practice for yourself. Just a few minutes a day to change your brain and your life. Each day write about three things that you are grateful for that happened that day and how that made you feel. At first it can be a bit hard, but soon your internal radar starts looking for those things. It starts to pay attention to them because completing the task each night makes seeing things to be grateful for a priority. It starts seeing things to be grateful for throughout the day, it notices them. Then it feels great at the time and you might even say thank you to someone who was thoughtful and make them feel great too. Not only does gratitude practice make you feel great and happier, it also has some great health benefits. Studies have shown it improves sleep, mental health, physical health, reduces pain and improves relationships. Why not give it a go for a month as see for yourself. What have you got lose? #gratitude #happiness #hypnotherapy #mindtraining

09.01.2022 OUR SHRINKING COMFORT ZONES Many people have found themselves challenged at this strange time with things that used to be easy for them in the past. Just like a muscle or any skill, your comfort zone is the same, if you don’t use it, you lose it. Our comfort zone is made up of the familiar places, people and activities that we do often, we know well. That is why it is comfortable. During this period, we have had to reduce the number of places, people and activities we are a ...doing, and in return our comfort zone shrinks. People who have had some form of anxiety may start to feel like their anxiety has gotten worse. Perhaps it is not anxiety, perhaps it is just not comfortable, not as familiar. Today we are stepping into what once was familiar but it’s been a while. Our comfort zone has shrunk. Now those once familiar things don’t feel right, it’s a bit different. It feels different, looks different, the rules are different with COVID and so therefore it is different and unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Feeling uncomfortable doesn’t have to be a bad thing. If something is not familiar, expect it to feel uncomfortable. Celebrate stepping out into the unfamiliar and the uncomfortable feelings that come with it. Celebrate exploring the uncomfortable and unfamiliar until it is familiar and comfortable again. Pat yourself on the back for pushing yourself past your comfort zone. Out every Thursday where you will find all the local news and the occasional tidbit from me.) #northernriverstimes #anxiety #anxietyrelief
