16.01.2022 Tyabb airport is the historical home of Helires going back to the days of Vowell Air Services and the Angel of Mercy, Australia’s first dedicated full-time helicopter air ambulance service starting in 1971. Tyabb airport is still the location of our head office and represents a huge asset to the Mornington peninsula and it needs to be protected. If you are a Victorian resident we ask you please read and sign the parliamentary e-petition below to help protect Tyabb airport’s ongoing status. Thank you!

11.01.2022 Merry Christmas from the team at Davis Station in Antarctica!

09.01.2022 Following the ANARE CLUB National Council quarterly meeting, on Saturday, February 8 at 4pm at the Bayview Eden in Melbourne, helicopter pilot Captain Leigh Hor...nsby will give a brief presentation about his time in the Antarctic flying helicopters, followed by a screening of a video compilation called "Soaring the Ice" about the the History of Australian Antarctic Aviation" The film is a marvellous account of the history of flying down south and features some fantastic archival film rarely seen before, narrated by Paul Cullen. With dual certification as an engineer and pilot, Leigh Hornsby made his first flight south in the summer of 1977/78 working in the Prince Charles Mountains and Enderby Land with Vowell Helicopters, and later with Helicopter Resources. In all he made 30 trips to the Antarctic, working with, not only Australian scientists and support staff, but also with the German, Chinese, Italian and Pakistan Antarctic expeditions. His rotary-wing certifications include Hughes 500C and 500D, Bell 206B, Bolkow BO105, Aerospatiale SA315 Lama, Aerospatiale ASA350B Squirrel and long-range Sikorsky S76 Mark II helicopters. During a medical evacuation he flew one of two helicopters from the Aurora Australis to Davis, via Casey and Mirny in one day, a flight of 2,500 km (equivalent to the distance between Hobart and Alice Springs!). And while with the Germans, he discovered the remains of Admiral Byrd’s Fokker aircraft, a relic from Byrd's pre-WW2 expeditions. Many ANARE expeditioners have flown with Leigh, and there is a plaque at Davis Station honouring his contributions, 1978-1995. After pioneering many new operational strategies in Antarctica, he retired from polar work a few years ago. For his exceptional aviation skill, and insistence on high standards of safety, Leigh was awarded the Australian Antarctic Medal in 1995. Leigh has kindly agreed to share some of his experiences with us. Members of the ANARE Club, their family and friends, as well as anyone interested in things Antarctic, are invited to attend this unique opportunity to hear Leigh speak, and view the excellent film "Soaring the Ice." Please stay on afterwards for dinner at the Bayview Eden & meet Leigh, and your National Council members from WA, Queensland, SA, NSW & Victoria. ANARE Club, National Council

08.01.2022 Introducing Tasmania’s biggest, most capable utility, passenger and fire fighting aircraft. Our new twin engine Bell 212 is able to carry more people and equipment and lift more on the cargo hook than any other Tasmanian based aircraft. She has just undergone a complete refurbishment at Oz Choppers and we couldn’t be happier with the amazing job Mark and his team have done. Chief Pilot Dave picked her up from their facility in Mudgee and ferried her back to Hobart. This aircraft represents a significant increase in fire fighting capability as the only Type 2 Medium aircraft permanently based in the State.

06.01.2022 It’s a scorcher in Hobart today! Our aircraft are on standby ready to rapidly respond to any new start fires. Luckily we haven’t had to launch yet!

05.01.2022 One of the first tasks each summer in Antarctica is completing survival training so the crew are fully prepared for any eventuality.
