24.01.2022 Researchers from JCU: James Cook University, Australia’s TropWATER are currently conducting Seagrass Surveys in Townsville. The team has been monitoring seagrass in Cleveland Bay annually since 2007 and stepped it up to twice-yearly surveys last year as part of the marine monitoring for our Channel Upgrade project. The seagrass surveys are undertaken from helicopter at low tide (pictured) for intertidal seagrass meadows and by boat for subtidal and deep water seagrass meadows. The research team looks at multiple factors including the biomass, spatial footprint and number of seagrass species present. Stay tuned for our annual Townsville Seagrass Report which will be released later this year, once the research team has completed their surveys and crunched the numbers.

21.01.2022 Not everything gets shipped in bulk. NMT Shipping and Emeco Group recently exported four bulldozers and a loader totalling almost 800 cubic metres of cargo from the Port of Townsville. It was an interesting change of pace from shipping containers for stevedores, Aurizon. These machines travelled from the mines in the Bowen Basin and are now on their way to the Goldfields in Western Australia.

21.01.2022 Farewell to the creepiest thing in the museum. We’ve been working with the team at the Maritime Museum Of Townsville to create a new exhibition exploring the symbiotic growth of our Port and the city of Townsville. This week the Museum’s Managing Curator Robert de Jong and Ewen McPhee from Queensland Museum began moving a number of items, including this old diving suit, from the Seafarer’s Gallery to make way for the new display. The exhibit will open later this year, and we look forward to having the Museum’s passionate volunteers show you around.

16.01.2022 Since World War II, Townsville Port has played a strategic role in protecting our borders and supporting humanitarian aid. During World War II, thousands of US and Australian troops were stationed in and around Townsville and Magnetic Island. Today we reflect on the selfless duty of the men and women who served our country and gave their lives. Lest We Forget.... Pic courtesy of Townsville Port, inner harbour.

15.01.2022 This is the Red-necked Stint, the smallest of Australia’s 37 migratory shorebirds, weighing just 30g and small enough to fit inside a wine glass. Despite its tiny size, the Red-necked Stint flies approximately 25,000km between Australia and breeding grounds in Siberia and Alaska each year. From October to February, we conduct annual surveys of migrating shorebirds like this one as part of our environmental monitoring for the Channel Upgrade project. Red-necked Stints were the... most common bird species found on Port lands surveyed in 2020, with their individual numbers in the location peaking in February. 15.01.2022 Our highly skilled marine pilots are responsible for safely steering visiting ships into port, which means they need to be prepared for all conditions. Our newest Marine Pilots Kate Semmens and Nathan Ladd recently undertook simulator training at the Smartship Australia simulator in Brisbane. Under the guidance of one of our Senior Marine Pilots, Kim Macpherson, Kate brushed up on her Emergency Response skills and Nathan learned to pilot vessels that are more significantly affected by wind such as car carriers and livestock vessels. Both pilots proved highly adept at honing their new skills.

15.01.2022 Put on the Barry White record. From November through to December, the Great Barrier Reef is a sight to behold. The annual coral spawning is now happening and scientists are engaging with tourism operators to give the process a little boost.

15.01.2022 Wayne and Matt from the Mission To Seafarers Townsville have been flexing their green thumbs near Berths 8 and 9 to create a welcoming garden for visiting seafarers. The garden is absolutely flourishing and our Port staff are really enjoying the tropical atmosphere it creates.

15.01.2022 Did you spend the Festive season pigging out on seafood? This little cutie did! Each August Greater Sand Plovers travel from their breeding grounds in Mongolia to spend Summer hanging out on Aussie beaches. They spend their time here resting, feasting and sprouting dazzling new feathers ahead of mating season.... As part of our Channel Upgrade project we have committed $17 million to environmental monitoring programs including shorebird surveys during the migratory season. 15.01.2022 The facial expressions are priceless! We think the look on Triple M’s Steve ‘Pricey’ Price’s face said it all when he dropped into the Port to visit our marine pilots this week. To say Pricey was impressed with our newest $3.3 million pilot vessel the Mantaray would be an understatement! Triple M Townsville

13.01.2022 Croc-zilla in the Port! Not really a 2-2.5m estuarine crocodile has been spotted in the inner harbour of Townsville early this morning. 13.01.2022 When the Port of Townsville first started trading in 1864, the modern concept of sustainability was unknown. Today, it has become so important that the theme ...of World Maritime Day on 24 September 2020 is Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet. Sponsored by the International Maritime Organization, under the aegis of the United Nations, it highlights goals such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing cleaner fuel oil, reducing marine litter, and improving efficiency through the electronic exchange of information. It’s a huge challenge for the Port and all those organisations involved with shipping. In days past, the two-story timber building that sits at the centre of the Maritime Museum of Townsville had a front-row seat on all the port action. It is, in fact, the former Pier Master’s Office. It dates from 1931 and was sited between Berths 4 and 5 at the port. From there the pier master controlled all incoming and outgoing ship movement. What sights this building must have seen as the port expanded and welcomed vessels from all over the globe! The Maritime Museum was founded on the upper floor of the building in 1986 and grew quickly. The pier master already having moved to newer, larger quarters, the refurbished wood structure was trucked in 1992 to its own larger site on Ross Creek. Renamed the Port Building, it now houses the Yongala Gallery and our administrative office. As a repurposed structure listed on the Local Heritage Register, it embodies both the history of the Port and the Museum’s sustainability goals of today. And it still has a great view of the waterfront, overlooking the berths of the Townsville Yacht Club and the coming and going of many beautiful boats. For more information, visit https://www.tmml.org.au/ Then come to 42-68 Palmer St. in South Townsville and catch some of the action yourself.

12.01.2022 'Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet'. Nearly everyone is affected by the shipping industry. While many people don’t know a lot about shipping and the maritime industry, most of the clothes we wear, and the objects we use in our daily lives come to us via ship. This year, World Maritime Day celebrations are focused on rebuilding the economy post-COVID-19 and the importance of meeting the Global Sustainability goals by 2030.... 12.01.2022 This #NAIDOC Week we're celebrating the First Nations people who have cared for this land for more than 65,000 years. The Port of Townsville is proud to work with On Common Country to train young Indigenous Australians in Construction, Conservation and Land Management. Past participants have helped to construct new gardens along Ross Street and we’re looking forward to welcoming a new cohort to the Channel Upgrade project very soon. Pictured are Noel from On Common Country an...d Robert from Civil Safety - Safety and Training RTO #32381 surveying their new site location at East Port. The Port of Townsville, which includes Environment Park, operates on Gurambilbarra Wulgurukaba traditional country. The Port’s footprint also extends to land traditionally belonging to the Bindal, Juru, Nywaigi and Warrgamay peoples. We pay our respects to the land’s Traditional Owners past, present and future.

11.01.2022 From little things, big things grow. While MGN Civil Pty Ltd’s red haul truck might look tiny compared to the excavator and mine site tippers in this picture, it’s no small fry. Trucks like this one have been hauling 24t loads of rock from the Ravenswood Gold mine to our Channel Upgrade project. The rocks are being used in our 2.2km rock wall as the vital outer armour that protects the wall from wave action. You can learn more about our Channel Upgrade project here: https://www.townsville-port.com.au//infra/channel-upgrade/

11.01.2022 Looks like a few North Queenslanders have been car shopping! Almost 1,000 new vehicles have arrived at the Port of Townsville in the last few days. The cars were shipped to Australia on two vessels one from Japan and one from Thailand. The cars are only at the Port for a short time before being transported to their new owners all over the North. While we have seen a dip in car imports recently, this is a great sign that overseas manufacturers are starting to pick up again.

06.01.2022 What a year 2020 has thrown at us. The Port's workplace has changed, with a portion of our staff working offsite and essential teams remaining onsite. With less people around it has been necessary for our team to stay connected and check in.... R U OK? Day, provides the perfect opportunity for the team to reach out to their workmates and enjoy a virtual water cooler chat. Together we can take care of each other. You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener. Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life: 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen 3. 04.01.2022 We are now coming to the end of rock deliveries for the 2.2km rock wall being built as part of our $193 million Channel Upgrade project. As we prepare to celebrate this huge achievement, we would like to acknowledge Halloran & Sons, who have been instrumental in managing our rock stockpile for the more than 18 months. Since April 2019, their local team has: managed 17,000 deliveries of rock from our seven local suppliers constructed and maintained a safe site for machi...nery accessing the construction area; and ensured efficient flow of almost 700,000t of rock from the stockpile to the wall. Thank you to all the team at Halloran & Sons for your contribution. The rock wall remains on track for completion in early 2021.

02.01.2022 Local company Pacific Marine Group has been busy removing some of the 27 markers along the Platypus and Sea Channels in preparation for channel widening to allow for bigger ships to call at the Port of Townsville. Maritime Safety Queensland has installed temporary virtual markers to ensure marine pilots can safely navigate large commercial ships through the channel. The Regional Harbour Master has worked with the Port to establish the locations for the new markers to be installed as part of the $232m Channel Upgrade project, which will ensure that Townsville maintains our position as the largest general cargo and container port in North Queensland.

01.01.2022 We recently welcomed the brand new bulk carrier vessel ‘KAIFONG’ fresh from her builders in the shipyard in Oshima, Japan. KAIFONG is operated by Swire Bulk and is the first unit in a planned series of 37,000 tonne bulk carriers. She was busy in port loading product from Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines for export, including 20, 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate destined for Spain and 13,000 tonnes of lead ingots destined for London. Last Friday port staff and shipping agent Townsville Shipping Agencies presented a commemorative plaque to Captain Sanjay Mishra, in recognition of the maiden voyage. Glencore Queensland Metals

01.01.2022 Roll out the carpet! No, we haven’t gone mad. What looks like carpet here is actually a high quality geo-textile material that is being installed in the new rock wall we’re building as part of the Channel Upgrade project. When complete, a total of 90,000sqm of this geo-textile material will be interlaced through 750,000 tonnes of rock to further reinforce the wall.
