23.01.2022 A word from the D A.C.C.S Nurse Muscular Dystrophy...What is it? Muscular Distrophy (MD) is a hereditary, neuromuscular disease that attacks and weakens a person's muscles over time. It is caused by incorrect or missing genetic information that prevents the body from making the proteins needed to build and maintain healthy muscles. Symptoms of MD... The main symptom of MD is progressive muscle weakness. Specific signs and symptoms begin at different ages and in different muscle groups, depending on the type of muscular dystrophy. Some common symptoms are; Frequent falls Difficulty walking Breathing difficulty Walking on toes Painful, stiff muscles Treatment of MD Unfortunately there is no cure for any form of muscular dystrophy. But treatments can help prevent or reduce problems in the joints and spine to allow people with MD to remain independent and mobile as long as possible. Treatment options include medications, physical and occupational therapy, and surgical and other procedures.

11.01.2022 A word From the D.A.C.C.S NURSE - Multiple Sclerosis..... What is it ??? Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. It is a demyelinating disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damage. These scars occur within the central nervous system and depending on where they develop, manifest into various symptoms. MS affects over 25,...600 in Australia and more than two million diagnosed worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Roughly three times as many women have MS as men. Symptoms of MS MS symptoms are varied and unpredictable, depending on which part of the central nervous system is affected and to what degree. No two cases of MS are the same and symptoms, depending on where MS lesions develop on the brain and spinal cord, can manifest in many different ways. Motor control- muscle spasms and weakness, ballance and function of the limbs Fatigue Continence problems Pain Visual problems Treatment of MS MS is a very variable disease. In addition, everyone responds differently to different medications and may experience different side-effects. It is difficult to directly compare the effectiveness of different MS medications as in most cases they have not been directly tested against each other in what is known as ‘head-to-head’ clinical trials. Life circumstances may also affect treatment choices for each individual e.g. other medical conditions, family planning, employment, travel, etc. It is therefore important to discuss the pros and cons of any medication that is recommended for you by your neurologist in relation to all of these factors. If you would like to know more about MS and the care we can provide to someone with MS please contact 07 3297 1884

10.01.2022 With temperatures reaching 40 degrees plus today, we would just like to remind everyone to keep cool and ensure you are drinking enough fluids. Those in our communities with disabilities, and the elderly, can really suffer through these heat waves. Certain disabilities can cause the body to lose the ability to sweat, which is one of our most important mechanisms to help cool our body. Please take 5 minutes from your day to check on your elderly and disabled neighbours and friends just to make sure they are ok during this heat wave.

07.01.2022 A word from the D.A.C.C.S Nurse Pressure Injuries...what are they? Also known as pressure sores, ulcers, and bed sores, these injuries are caused by unrelieved pressure and/or shear force on any part of the body. Any time you lie or sit down in the same position for an extended period of time, pressure is applied to different parts of your body. Any object that has continuous contact with your skin has the potential to cause a pressure injury. Signs to look for when doing sk...in inspections include: Red, purple or blue skin Blisters Swelling Dry patches Shiny areas Warm areas Painful areas Ways to prevent pressure sores: Eatting a healthy diet can help maintain good skin quality Keep your skin dry Avoid massaging your skin, especially over bony parts. Move/change your position frequently when sitting or laying down. Pressure injuries may look minor, however they can hide more damage under the skin. So it is very important to maintain excellent skin care. Pressure injury care is everyone's responsibility! See more

04.01.2022 When you are out in the community it is important to remember that people with a disability just want to be treated the same as anyone else. So here is a few tips to help: DO NOT stare at them: this makes anyone feel uncomfortable, let alone someone who may look, feel, speak 'differently' Be kind and curtious: every person in the world deserves this as a bare minimum. Be respectful and understand confidentiality: remember everyone has a right to privacy and this include...s any person with a disability. They do not have to tell you any information about themselves. And lastly, NEVER ASSUME someone has or has not got a disability. There are many disabilities out there that can not be seen. Please remember that a person with a disability is an individual and has a right to privacy and to be included in all aspects of life. #DisabilityAwareness #AllWalksOfLife #Inclusion

03.01.2022 With the most popular topic in media being Corona Virus at the moment, lets take a look at hand hygiene. It is imperative that we are all washing our hands regularly as it is the most effective way to protect yourself from getting sick. The key to achieving this is by washing your hands correctly. The following 5 steps should be followed: 1. Wet... 2. Lather 3. Scrub 4. Rinse 5. Dry Refer to the below image to see these steps in motion. Please note that Hand Sanitizer should only be used when there is no other option, as it doesn't get rid of all types of germs and is not effective if your hands are visibly dirty or greasy Hand Hygiene is EVERYONE'S responsibility!

01.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all from DACCS We hope you all have an amazing day filled with good food and great company!
