07.01.2022 DOGS AND CHICKENS A few times a month (and three times in the last 24 hours) we get calls from distraught dog owners who have lost chooks to the family pooc...h. So without further ado, here’s our advice if you have a new puppy and already established chickens OR have a pet dog that is very interested in your newly acquired brood of hens. Don’t leave young or new dogs with free contact to chickens unsupervised. Don’t allow your dog or puppy to stare, chase, stalk, bark or fence run the coop. This behaviour is just building prey drive that will ultimately result in a devastating situation if a chicken escapes one day. Actively desensitise your dog, under control, on lead and under the guidance of a trainer if needed. You want the chickens to become part of the background. Give dogs with high prey drive genetic fulfillment! A dog that herds sheep every day, flushes rabbits for a living or works its butt off at flyball finds it much easier to ignore chooks than a dog that sits in the yard all day (it’s much easier to say ‘don’t chase that’ when they know what they can chase). Without the right genetics, it takes a lot of time and training for dogs to coexist with chickens in a free roaming backyard, and even then, be prepared for some dogs to never be suitable in this environment. In which case, design your yard accordingly to keep your chickens safe and time share the free ranging space so all pets are happy.
