23.01.2022 This poll is now open at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1755971574632862/permalink/2920274088202599/ History Month, October 2020, will see facebook pages and g...roups across Gippsland combine to discover the Seven Historical Wonders of Gippsland. Just like the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Our first step is to make preliminary lists, shire by shire (and including one city). The voting will open on 1 October. Between now and then, this is your chance to check and contribute to the list from which East Gippsland's poll will be taken. What is the place that you as a local, feel is that special one where you feel most in touch with history? Where, as a visitor, is the place to which you most want to go? The listing is being managed by Heritage Network East Gippsland.

18.01.2022 A Practice Guide for managers of heritage collections that have had to close because of the COVID-19 pandemic has been provided by the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material: https://aiccm.org.au/disaster/disaster-response As many museums and historical societies face extended closure, we need to consider how to ensure that a collection is not neglected despite the less-frequent attention that it receives during this period when people arent around on the same regular basis that applied until a week or so ago. Member groups, please follow the link and take action as appropriate.

17.01.2022 Due to circumstances out of our control and in the interest of caring about our staff and patrons, PAYNESVILLE MARITIME MUSEUM regrettably will be closing temporarily till further notice.Due to circumstances out of our control and in the interest of caring about our staff and patrons, PAYNESVILLE MARITIME MUSEUM regrettably will be closing temporarily till further notice.

16.01.2022 History in the News In the Sunday Age yesterday there was an article lamenting the under-funding of the national Archives of Australia - which is taking years (...not days, not weeks, not months but years and even decades) to provide requested documents for research. It has a staggering backlog of 25,000 research requests. Read more https://www.smh.com.au//books-phds-under-threat-as-scholar

16.01.2022 GHOST SIGN The 1930s art deco signage of the Ensay South Hotel, still visible behind the trees. The building is now a home and art gallery. The new section (or... perhaps new facade on the old building) was built in 1939-40. Photo: H Martin, 2018

13.01.2022 Its going to be hard to come to grips with the dimension of loss for East Gippsland --- loss from so many perspectives including loss of some of our cherished ...heritage which weve all put effort into appreciating and preserving. In our local Orbost area, you will know that the Wairewa Railway Bridge, one of the wooden wonders along he East Gippsland Rail Trail was severely damaged. See more

03.01.2022 Mallacoota has suffered horrendous damage in the bushfire there, now they need our support. Anyone who has photos, documents or newspapers relating to the town and surrounding area can pass share them via https://www.facebook.com/groups/2805353139486546/

02.01.2022 Another great talk coming up at the library in Bairnsdale - Michael Veitch on 18 September.

02.01.2022 So much of our history is being destroyed, along with all the other things so dear to our culture. The Genoa Truss Bridge is Victorias only genuine Highway Bridge of the type illustrated in Victorian road-and-bridge construction manuals early this century. It was designed and built as an important link on the newly named Princes Highway, when that route provided the only trafficable motor connection between Melbourne and Sydney.
