07.01.2022 Our hero @bexinreallife of #creativenaturallypodcast auctioned handmade goods to raise money for Syrian refugees. We asked her some questions about her incredible efforts. 1.How did you come up with the idea of raising money for the Syrian crisis through craft?... I took part in the #getyourknittingwishesgranted gift-along on Instagram that was in process in early december and was aimed at spreading some seasonal love around the knitting community. The idea was that you ask for any yarns or patterns that you have really wanted to try and people would gift you what you are asking if they choose too. You then look for gifts that you can fulfil and the knitting love just keeps spreading from there. I had 3 amazing yarny gifts granted and this really inspired me with how generous and caring the crafty community is on Instagram. After seeing 1 too many videos of dying Syrian children on Facebook, I finally clicked into action and realised that there really is no harm in trying out crazy mad ideas and decided to host a creative auction on Instagram with all proceeds going to the UNHCR's Syrian Crisis Appeal. 2. What was it like working with crafters from all over the world? It was amazing to see just how 'on board' everyone was, and it was amazing to really see the followers that Ive collected on Instagram and Youtube over the last couple of years really coming together and supporting this project. Almost immediately the donations came flooding in, from custom knit colour work sweaters, to hand knit shawls and your hand dyed yarn, Sophie! 3. What was the outcome? The outcome was amazing. The auction lasted for 7 days and raised $620! All this money was raised by people bidding on handmade creations that were donated for the Auction. It was quite something to see how many people were inspired by this Auction and got in contact with me saying that they felt empowered to be more proactive with causes such as the Syrian crisis. It's easy to be paralysed by how much needs to be done and underestimate what impact even small actions can have
