24.01.2022 The 1962 Western Division that faced the touring Great Britain Lions feature today. Western Division was a noted powerhouse of the game at that time and their team, led by Tony Paskins, has some names that still resonate. However the 1962 Great Britain side was as good as any touring side to ever visit these shores and they won this match at Bathurst 24-10.

23.01.2022 This bloke has a lot to answer for. Albert Henry Baskerville formed the professional All Blacks in 1907 that kicked off rugby league in New Zealand and Australia on their way to tour Great Britain. His actions saw the birth of international rugby league and changed the game forever, and yet he died of pneumonia before he returned to New Zealand.

21.01.2022 We share another image from the 1989 Trans-Tasman series today. Bradley Clyde, playing in the second row, evades the clutches of Brendan Tuuta (aka The Baby Faced Assassin) whilst team mates Paul Sironen, Greg Alexander and Paul Vautin loom in support. Picture from the Action Photographics archive.

19.01.2022 Much discussion already about the new design for the NSW State of Origin jersey unveiled yesterday. Some may be surprised to learn that the State team has worn different designs in the past, apart from the traditional sky blue. In 1919 they wore a dark blue jersey for the tour of Queensland, which took place at the same time the Australian side was touring New Zealand. ... And this photo from 1945 shows them first interstate game after the end of the Second World War. Skipper Herb Narvo introduces the Duke of Gloucester to the famous Frank Bumper Farrell, which would surely have been a thrill for the Duke. Next in line is Joe Jorgensen, then Noel White watches on, Arthur Bourke (obscured), Jack Spencer and Jack Hampstead, who is smiling. Looks to be Eric Bennett and Norm Jacobson on the left of the image. The NSW jersey was blue with a gold V.

19.01.2022 These two images come from the first game of the 1982 Kangaroo tour, which saw the Australian Kangaroos face the Papua New Guinea Kumuls for the first time. This history making match was held at Port Moresby and drew a capacity crowd, as can be seen from the first photo. The second image shows Rohan Hancock, father of current Jillaroos star Steph Hancock, unloading to skipper Max Krilich. Australia won the match 38-2.

19.01.2022 A special treat for Easts and/or Sydney Roosters fans today with this page scanned from the Rugby League Week pictorial in 1975 which was another premiership winning year for the Bondi boys. Anyone who saw them in action will recall what a marvellous team they were.

19.01.2022 The NRL Museum sends our best wishes and congratulations to the three Legends that will be inducted into the Rugby Football League Hall of Fame in England later today. Derek Turner, Johnny Whiteley and Andy Gregory (pictured with ball during his stint with Illawarra) all had wonderful careers that make them fully deserving of such an honour. We join the wider rugby league community in congratulating them.

18.01.2022 The 2011 Junior Kangaroos contained some familiar names and plenty of talent but they were not able to overcome a strong Junior Kiwis side. Played at Ausgrid Stadium, Newcastle, the Junior Kiwis recorded a 28-16 win after the Junior Roos had led 12-10 at half time.

18.01.2022 This photo from the Rugby League Week archive shows Ron Pilon on the charge against Wests at Lidcombe Oval in 1980, when the Magpies defeated the Tigers 26-4. Pilon is a legend in West Wyalong and related to the famous Ron Crowe and the Broad families, which are rugby league royalty in the Riverina. Behind him is Phil Schaefer (one of the few league players born in Bangladesh), who has done some great work with the Combined Independents Schools rugby league over the last couple of decades, and the great Olsen Filipaina, who was a Polynesian pioneer and is still one of the most popular players from that era.

18.01.2022 This image comes from the early days of the Sydney Football Stadium, now known as Allianz Stadium. It shows the workers spraying the field to complete the in-goal signage on ground that bore the name of the sponsor ahead of one of the first Grand Finals to be staged at the venue. 16.01.2022 William Webby Neill holds a unique place in the history of rugby league in Australia. He was a member of the South Sydney teams that won the inaugural two NSWRL premierships in 1908 and 1909 before he switched to Newtown in 1910 and helped them to their first title. He thus became the first man to win three successive premierships and the first to do it with two clubs. Neill played one Test for Australia against the Maori in 1909 and was a member of the 1911-12 Kangaroo to...uring side that won The Ashes. After injury forced him to end his playing days he became a referee and went on to serve with distinction in that sphere too, controlling three premiership deciders and being appointed to the First Test of the 1932 Ashes series, thus making him the first man to play and then referee Test football. Webby Neill passed away in 1964.

16.01.2022 The remarkable Test between Australia and Tonga saw Australia claim a hard fought win, but already eyes are turned towards the next Rugby League World Cup, when the rise of the Pacifica nations is set to continue. The 2000 RLWC saw Australia victorious (pictured here courtesy of the Action Photographics archive), but yesterday showed that international rugby league is alive and well.

15.01.2022 We have recently received a few items produced as Winfield Cup merchandise from Adam Hendry, including this wonderful boxed set of Redhead matches that features all of the competing clubs in the 1995 premiership, the last year of the sponsorship.

15.01.2022 This photograph from c1970 shows a group of great players dressed up like the proverbial sore toe. Immortal Reg Gasnier is on the left, next to British half back Tommy Bishop, who had returned Down Under and eventually led Cronulla to a Grand Final. Next to Bishop is Monty Porter, a stalwart of the Dragons premiership era who then switched to Cronulla and helped get the club off the ground. Next to Monty is another Immortal, Johnny Raper, who seems to have polished his suit, much like Bishop. On the right is Ken Kearney, who had only been retired for less than decade but looks much older than his former Dragons team mates.

In the front row are Steve Walters, Peter Jackson, Mal Meninga, Willie Carne and John Cartwright. Picture courtesy of the Action Photographics archive

09.01.2022 The last full day the #NRLMuseum is open to the public is this Friday, 7th Dec 2018. We are then open to the public sporadically until Friday 21st Dec, but admission cannot be guaranteed due to the large number of private functions hosted during this time. We open to the general public again on Monday, 14th Jan 2019. Thank you for all your support in 2018 and have a safe festive season.

09.01.2022 One of the treasures in our collection is the collection of photographs and negatives donated on behalf of the late Warwick Lawson. Warwick was a photographer who loved rugby league and worked for News Ltd for many years. He was also heavily involved as a player, coach and official with the old Journalists Cup. In 1978 he accompanied the Kangaroos on their tour of Great Britain and France. The image above comes from the match against Cumbria, which Australia won 47-4, and shows Tom Raudonikis flying through the air over Cumbrian fullback Paul Charlton. Other Aussies in the frame (l to r) are Steve Rogers, Graham Olling (partly obscured) and Ray Price.

08.01.2022 All smiles for the Kangaroos after their 58-0 defeat of New Zealand in this 2007 Trans-Tasman Test, played at Wellington. The Aussies pictured are (Back row l to r) Mick Crocker, Brent Kite, Israel Folau, Willie Mason, Jarryd Hayne, Ryan Hoffman. Middle row: Dallas Johnson, Greg Inglis, Kurt Gidley, Steve Price, Brett Stewart. Front row: Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith, Nathan Hindmarsh, Greg Bird and Petero Civoiceva. 07.01.2022 Yesterday we had a visit from Mrs Delores Devery, widow of former Australian five eighth Pat Devery. Pat passed away late last year after living in the USA for many years and Delores came in to donate brought some of his memorabilia, which was a generous gesture that we appreciate greatly. These three emblems come from jerseys Pat wore (NSW and Australia) and swapped (Qld) during the 1946 season. They are in superb condition and look as though they have been kept hidden for the last 72 years.

06.01.2022 This wonderful image, the work of famous photographer Ern McQuillan, adorned the front cover of the NSW Leagues Club journal in 1968, some 50 years ago.

05.01.2022 This great photo from the Rugby League Week archive captures the excitement and anticipation in the crowd prior to kick off of one of the matches on the 1982 Kangaroo tour. Laurie Nichols stands out in his t-shirt among a group of Australian supporters. In the bottom left of the picture the great broadcaster Frank Hyde, sitting in his commentary position in the grandstand (no private boxes for them back then!), leans forward in discussion whilst John Brennan is sitting next to him.

05.01.2022 Matthew Ridge kicks for goal watched by a group of displeased Kangaroos judging from the expressions on the faces of the players. Aussies pictured are (l to r) Ian Roberts, Martin Bella, Kerrod Walters, Paul Sironen, Gary Belcher, Allan Langer, Michael Hancock, Steve Roach and Mark McGaw. The image, courtesy of the Rugby League Week archive, comes from the 1990 Test match played at Wellington, when the Kangaroos recorded a 24-6 victory.

04.01.2022 This gem from the Rugby League Week archives captures a moment from the 1980 Round Seven clash between Newtown and Cronulla. Barry Pearson, who had a prolific career in Illawarra football bookended by a season with Manly in 1968 and the 1980 season at Cronulla, has the ball and looks to be heading off from dummy half for a run. His eyes are on the inside of Tommy Raudonikis in the Newtown number 7, whilst fellow Jet Bill Noonan, looks on. Other Sharks in the picture are Dane Sorensen and Steve Kneen. Cronulla won this encounter 19-16.
