11.01.2022 Berkshire pigs are considered to be a heritage breed. They are particularly well suited to the outdoors as their black hair protects them from sunburn (Not a major issue at the moment @oakvallyfarm). They are slow growing as they do not convert feed very efficiently and they are much fatter than commercial pigs. Our pigs are fed on fallen fruits such as apples, pears and plums from the orchard and we are lucky enough to be able to feed them acorns from our numerous Oak Trees.... This is the traditional Spanish way to raise pigs and gives them a truly unique flavour. Our pigs are free to roam and forage whenever they like. They are incredibly inquisitive, have a great temperament and are very playful. At Oak Valley we run Dorpers which were first introduced into Australia in 1996 and are quickly becoming the fastest growing sheep breed in the land due to their ability to produce high quality meat under extensive conditions.
