22.01.2022 Records are meant to be broken but there are those ones that just don’t want to budge. Since the 1984/85 season the record for the U9 Boys 800m had stood firm at 2mins 41secs. Ruari Mercer entered this season having snared the U8 record for the 700m on the final running day of last season, giving hope that he might be the one to challenge the 36 year old record. Ruari was 4 secs away in late October.a fortnight later, 2 seconds away..and on 21st November he came agonisingl...y close, missing the mark by little more than a second. Every time Ruari ran more and more of the crowd stopped what they were doing to watch, amazed at how hard he was pushing in pursuit of the record. On 7th December, now with just about every person at the track yelling their support, Ruari took off after it again. None who were there could possibly forget it.Ruari didn’t just break the record, he smashed it by over 3 seconds, crossing the line in a time of 2mins 37.71secs. One can only wonder for how long this new mark will stand. Yours is a medal very well earned, Ruari. Congratulations on your outstanding achievement.
