25.01.2022 And so it began... Marcus became interested firstly in the rare #Crocus of the Mediterranean through his work as a librarian in Tasmania. According to friends he had catalogued a book on the topic and subsequently pored over it after taking it home. Apparently he had always been interested in plants but it wasn't until this book came into view that he made up his mind to make the right connections & plan his future adventures into the Alps of #Greece & #Turkey.... His first trip to Greece was in 1991. Here he is pitcured that year as a fresh faced 39 year old smiling from ear to ear with anticipation, seed packet in hand, on the island of #Hydra, scouring the rugged landscapes for soon to be discovered treasure. Don't forget, if any of you have images of plants from HillView or stories regarding Marcus please submit them to social media using the dedicated hashtag #HillViewCollection. We have a new Instagram account which is particularly good for sharing images! @hillviewrareplants

23.01.2022 #Repost from @antique_perennials This beautiful Salvia was given to us by the late great Marcus Harvey of Hill View Rare Plants. It is an unknown species collected in the wild from seed and it has performed brilliantly here in Kinglake. Strong angular growth smothered in two toned purple and mauve flowers to 80cm high. So we thought we should propagate it and call it Salvia 'Marcus Harvey'. #salvia #marcusharvey #garden#nursery #plant #perennial #rare #hillviewrareplants #HillViewCollection

18.01.2022 From @greenhaugh.gardens Anemone pavonina. Seed imported from the late Marcus Harvey of Hillview Rare Plants. Sown July 2015 and now established at Greenhaugh. Marcus said of this seed ‘ Collected in the braided gullies of the Taygetos mountains in the Peloponnese. Brilliant eye-burning scarlet, saucer-shaped flowers with dark anthers often surrounded by a central white zone. The epitome of a Greek Spring’. #greenhaugh #marcusharvey #hillviewrareplants #spring #peloponnese #greece #taygetosmountains #specialseed #visitourplantnursery #treasures springflowers # springbulbs #nzgardenstrust # opengarden #gardenofinternationalsignificance #bringapicnic

08.01.2022 Hi all, just wanted to share this with you - yesterday I visited Jnis Rukšns in Latvia representing my late father Marcus Harvey (founder of Hill View) to thank him for many years of gardening & Crocus camaraderie, & in the most recent period to show mine & my family's appreciation for the publishing of 'Crocus harveyi' as a tribute to Dad.... In the words of Jnis: "Yesterday I was visited by Alex Harvey, son of famous Australian nurseryman Marcus Harvey, who died from cancer at 64. He was great friend of me and great lover of crocuses. He found new crocus on Ikaria Island and send its seeds to me under label - Crocus nubigena. When it flowered with me for the first time, I immediately saw that it is new species. As Marcus just recently died, I described it and it was published as Crocus harveyi in International Rock Gardener (#90, June 2017)." It was a great, surreal moment for me after many years of hearing Jnis' name - & seeing his name written on the old black & white list he always sent out to my Dad's place. It was a magnificent day on the outskirts of Cesis complete with delicious fresh apples & grapes sourced from the garden, a spot of beekeeping & honey sampling, running garden errands, a little weeding, a delightful lunch at Jnis' favourite restaurant, some local art appreciation, taking in the delicate beauty of his Crocus collection, plant hunting tales & some heartfelt discussion of his working friendship with Dad. I also particularly wanted to meet Jnis now to hear why he felt compelled to name this incredible plant in honour of Dad, & to feel an even greater connection with what Dad achieved through his life work as we currently finalise the editing of his travel/plant hunting short story book! We're currently seeking an appropriate printer/publisher for it, so if you are interested in acquiring a copy please keep your eyes open for further updates!! If you are subscribed to Hill View emails we will also be sending out information that way as well! I sincerely want to thank you all for your interest, & special thanks again to Jnis & family & friends for having me visit! Cheers, Alex
