25.01.2022 HINDU NEW YEAR - 13 April 2021 RAM NAVMI - Day one of nine CHAITRA NAV RATRI
25.01.2022 TEACHERS DAY & FATHERS DAY Sep 5 & 6 While parts of the world are preparing for Fathers Day on Sunday 6 September, students in India are celebrating Teachers Day a day earlier.... Its been an age old tradition to mark Teachers Day in India in memory of recognition of a remarkable scholar - who went upto great lengths to promote teaching and free education in India. TEACHERS DAY OR PRATHAM GURU DAY Born on 5 Sep, 1888 in Tamil Nadu, a teacher by the name of Radha Krishna became a household name. He spent 40 years in his great teaching career. Sri Radha Krishna cane later to be known as Dr Sarvpalli Radha Krishna and on his birth day in 1962, he bagan giving out free education in India. FATHERS DAY 6 Sep As far back as mid 1930s, families have observed Fathers Day on first Sunday of September in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand. In the United States, its been observed in first Sunday of June, a trend marking a public holiday and it started in 1966. Although the third Sunday of June was also observed in the United States as Fathers Day. In parts of Europe especially Spain, Italy and Portugal - their Fathers Day falls on 19 March, being a holy Christian day. This day is modern day concept as it was not observed during Roman times. It is a day in recognition of our fathers and forefathers and their roles in our lives daily. MOTHERS DAY Similar to Fathers Day, families in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji observe Mothers Day in May. Mothers Day is observed on second Sunday of May every year in Australia, Fiji and New Zealand. HINDU BELIEFS ALthough Hindus believe in Guru Purnima on the full moon day of Ashadr every year, to honour their god fathers, we believe its Mothers Day and Fathers Day every day of our lives. BEST WISHES FROM HINDU COSMOS From all of us at Hindu Cosmos and Sri Shani Sankat Mochan Mandir community, best wishes to everyone on the Teachers Day and Fathers Day.
24.01.2022 THE DAY AFTER As if you’ve not had enough choice of sweets and delicacies over last three days of Deepawali, here’s another festival to spoil your diet. A day after the much awaited festival of all year, Deepawali - we are rewarded with Annkuut or Goverdhan puuja on the first day of Shukla paksh of kartik month.... On this day devotees flock in huge numbers to the mountain God, Goverdhan maharaj to mark anniversary of when Sri Krishna convinced all his favourite Vrindavran disciples to perform rituals to Goverdhan Deva instead of Indra Dev. ANNKUUT NOV 15 Today devout Sri Krishna bhakts prepare dishes of many flavours - upto 56 - to offer to their Vrindavan God. The trend is widespread in the world not just north India where Sri Goverdhan dev sits today. During this kartik month, devotees also do parikarma or around 22 kilometres to mark the past of 5132 years when Sri Krishna actually did his leela in Vindravan. BHAI DUUJ 16 November Another festival associated with Deepawali is Bhai Duuj - the second day after when brothers visit their sisters to enjoy a meal. This is to mark how God of Death - Yamraj visits his sister Yamuna in Vindravan - and share a meal prepared by Ma Yamuna, flowing as a river around Vindravan. Both Yam Dev - for whom we lit Yam Deep on the day before Deepawali - and Deviyas Yamuna are children of Surya Dev. Our scriptures assert that brothers and sisters who jointly share a meal on this auspicious tithi are pardoned by Yam Dev and spared of accidental death. Jai Yam Dev. Stay tuned in this site for note updates of festivals and fasts in this kartik month, finishing on Nov 30.
23.01.2022 A CASE OF GROWING SHIV LING AND GROWING NAGH DEVA Sri Shani Sankat Mochan Mandir Sydney 12 April 2021 We hear of numerous miracles daily of some sort or another but this story of two Shiv bhakti shrines will have some of us baffled.... GROWING SHIV LING IN MP, India Ever since Sri Shiva Mahadev gave the five pandos a mani as a gift and it was planted on this very site in the Sri Krishna era of Dwapar yugh, a maha ling that grows every year has sprung up here. Known as Matangeshvara Mandir, it is a Shiva shrine in the Khajuraho town of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is the only Mandir that is so popular in the region because of its enormous and colourful history. Now proclaimed a UNESCO site, it is preserved for future generations but open daily to devotees from all over the world. The most astonishing feature of this Mandir is that the length it grows in size upwards towards Dev Lok, is the same dimension it grows by below ground towards Patal Lok. Some estimates have it that it grows 6-8 inches or even higher every year. Devotees are fascinated by the magnitude and the energy that the ling creates for followers of Sri Shiv Mahadevaji. GROWING SESH NAGH DEV IN FIJI Since the 1950s, the management of Nagh Mandir in Labasa, Fiji have raised the roof of the temple four times or by some counts five times to facilitate for the growing Sesh Nagh Deva. It is believed this Nagh Dev’s locality is around close vicinity to where the Kaliya Nagh was sent to by Sri Krishna from Gokul during Dwapur Yugh. Sri Krishna chased the Nagh Dev as he was seen to be terrorising residents of Vindravan during his time. Sri Krishna had asked Kaliya Nagh to go to Ramnik Dwip, a name commonly associated with the Fiji group of islands. The temple today stands about 17 feet rising from around 8.5 feet in early 1970s when the Mandir was inaugurated. The shrine was first discovered in 1930s but because of British Raj, the place was not worshipped until a temple was erected there to properly house the growing Deva. A second growing ling and Nagh Dev has been noticed in the same hilly terrains of Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second main island. That Mandir is appropriately called Kailash Parvat Mandir, now a fully fledged Mandir with a full time priest and a regular flow of devotees.

21.01.2022 DOUBLE FAST FESTIVE DAY - SATURDAY 29 AUG Today is parvartini ekadashi - when Sri Hari Vishnu changes his position in his baikunth lok. Along with ekadashi fast, today 29 August is called Vaman Dwadashi. On this divine tithi Sri Hari Vishnu arrived on earth as a dwarf form of Brahman and asked King Bali for a piece of land to do his tapsya.... He took avtaar of Vaman - making this month of Bhadrapadh a divine one as we have witnessed three avatars of Sri Hari Vishnu - first Sri Krishna on Astmi tithi, Varaah or that of a pig on 21 Aug and now Vaman on 29 Aug. PARVITINI EKADASHI As the name suggests, it denotes a change. Will fasting and observing this ekadashi bring change to our lives or fortunes? Sri Hari Vishnu who is in a current state of divine Yog nidra or sleep, changes his posture today. Sri Hari Vishnu enters into chaturmaas - four months of divine rest in Ashadra month and stays in that state till kartik month of Deepawali. On todays ekadashi day - a day that is observed in his honour to please Sri Hari Vishnu - he changes his position. Like other ekadashi vrats, one should: 1) chant Om namo Bhagwate vasudevaye 2) observe fast on just water or fruits or root crops 3) bathe Sri Vishnu in holy water and panchaminute 4) sing glories of Sri Hari Vishnu 5) read or recite Sri Hari katha or scripture like Ramayan and Gita parth VAMAN DWADASHI Normally this day falls a day after Parvartini ekadashi but this year, it is merged and to be observed one one day - Saturday 29 Aug. Sri Hari Vishnu arrived on earth to ask three footsteps of land from King Bali who was on his penultimate havan before he could capture the heavens from demi gods. In his first step, he measures the entire Mother Earth, second the gods planets and the third he took King Bali himself. Bali was then king of all three loks - Mother Earth, Patal Lok and Dev Lok.

19.01.2022 A MIX OF PITRA PUJA AND DEV PUJA TODAY 17 Sep Today we will say our final goodbyes to our ancestors on this Pitru Amavysya day with offerings of various kinds. The day is also called Mahalay. Our pitra forefathers will leave our home surroundings for another year and only to be returned here next year when Pitra Paksh comes in Ashvin month, 2021.... WHAT SHOULD WE DO? 1) offer jal on a kush plant or on just plain ground if no kush plant is available. You must face south to make the offerings. You can mix jal water with rice and black till. 2) you can also make simple food or even khir n puri and offer to our ancestors 3) chant: Om Pitru devaye namah or Pitru Deviyaye namah (girls or ladies) 4) light a diya made out of sarso oil on front of your yard of the house around sunset Preferably ladies of the house should light the Diya. 5) feed bhojans or foods to Brahmans, the poor and needy or even animals like cows, crows or dogs. 6) donate raw items like food and milk. As our pitra dev and deviyas depart our homes, they could either bless us for prosperity or curse us for sufferings. Thats why offerings we make today matters a lot. Its particularly important for those who have not made any offerings. VISHWAKARMA PUJA SEP 17 Coincidentally today is also a important Dev puja today - birth of Vishkarma Dev, our deva responsible for architects, engineers and carpenters. Some call him: the divine architect and yet others know him by being God of machines. When we perform puja rites for a new car, purohits often also do VISHWAKARMA dev. So today if you get a chance, you should do some brief puja vidhi for your car, planting a Swastika, showing dhup and Diya, etc of your vehicle. VISHWAKARMA is the god for everything from dams, buildings, cars and locomotives to computers. He is the god responsible for building the immaculate Lanka palaces, Sri Krishnas Dwarka and Sudamapur. He is also behind success in construction of loks and dhaarms of the many Gods. Simple mantras to please Sri VISHWAKARMA Dev. Shilpakari Namo Namah Mangalkari Namo Namah Chakradhari Namo Namah Om VISHWAKARMAnaye namah OM Aadhara Shaktape Namah OM Kumayi Namah OM Anantam Namah OM Prithivyay Namah FRIDAY 18 Sep marks start of purshotam maas.

16.01.2022 15 COLD HARD FACTS ABOUT PITRA PAKSH WE SHOULD NOT IGNORE 1) The dates for this year 2020 are 2 Sep 2020 to 17 Sep... 2. Best form of offering for our pitra ancestors is doing tarpan - black til and rice on a kush plant with a lota or just hand. 3. Direction to face for offering to our ancestors pitra dev and deviye should always be south 4. We can also offer khir, sweet rice pudding with a sprinkle of black til 5. The best day to make such a offering is the exact tithi of death of your ancestors, pitra dev or deviya 6. If you have exact date of death, you could ask your family priest or visit Drik Panchang and type in date, month and year of death 7. Our ancestors pitra dev and deviya always expect such offering on the exact tithi of death 8. If tithi is not available, ie if you cannot ascertain the date of death then best to do offering on last day, Amavysya. 9. Can I continue my daily prayers? Yes you can and you should - all daily routine rituals or vidhi can be continued. 10. Who can do shradh water and til offering? Everyone can though usually if theres a male person he should. 11. What can we eat during this 15 days? Vegetarian or satwick food is the best for all times. It is desirable to stay vegetarian. 12. How many generation ancestors should we make offering for? Upto seven generations can be done though usually devotees only do three. 13. Is there any harm if we dont pitra paksh puja? We all will become pitra ancestors one day so if you dont do offerings now or dont contribute to one then you could be without any offerings. 14. What we shouldnt do during these times? New house, business or ventures and projects should be deferred. No new vrats or fasts or puja sankalap should be undertaken. 15. Can I do sidha daan instead? Yes you could but ask if the purohit can do a tarpan for you.

15.01.2022 PITRA PAKSH MOKSHA YIELDING EKADASHI Sep 13 Today is Indra Ekadashi when one persons efforts can yield benefits to seven generation of ancestors. Observing Indra Ekadashi with strict rituals can not only guarantee moksha the devotee who is actually undertaking the vrat but also help liberate our pitra devas.... While the guide to observing todays ekadashi is identical to all other 24 during a year, the benefits are enormous. GET IT RIGHT Activities to ensure you do it right today: 1) cleanse Salikram or Sri Hari Vishnu murti with holy water and panchaminute - milk, yoghurt, ghee, honey and gudr or sugar. 2) offer tulsi leaves or manjiri and chant Om namo Bhagwate vasudevaye 3) read Sri Hari Vishnu related scriptures - Gita, Ramayan, Vishnu Puran or Garur Puran or even chalisas for Sri Vishnu, Ram or Krishna 4) fast during the entire day till Monday morning on just water or if unable to then fruits and nuts or rootcrops 5) Chant mantras like a) Om namo Bhagwate vasudevaye b) gayatri mantra c) guru mantra d) Sri Krishna Govind hare Murari he nath Narayan Vasudeva e) Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram KATHA ON INDRA EKADASHI In medieval times, we had a Rajah Indrasen reigning for some time. In a dream one night, he saw how his parents were suffering in Narak lok - kingdom of Yamraj, our death God. Upset by his dream, he set out to find ways to help liberate his parents from their karma and relieve them from Yam lok. Upon advise by Brahmans and his assistants, Rajah Indrasen observed strict vrat, did chanting and bathed Sri Salikram in panchaminute. He also listened to Sri Hari katha. Very late into the night, he fell off to sleep in his kingdoms Mandir. And Sri Hari Vishnu was so impressed with Rajah Indrasens bhakti that he appeared in his dreams and promised him that all his pitra Devas who have not attained swarag lok, or heavens will be liberated by his Ekadashi rituals.

14.01.2022 MA SHAELPUTRI - Day one of Chaitra Nav Ratri 13 April 2021 How can a Devi derive multiple names? Like most Gods who do a range of activities, hence they acquire many names. ... Ma Parvati, born after her disastrous past life of Sati when she ended her journey at her birthplace in Haridwar at her father Dach Prajapati’s home, became destined to please Sri Shiva Mahadeva for the second time. Since her birth, when Sage Naradh Muni outlined Parvati’s life chart, she began her worship of Mahadeva. Parvati came to be called as Shaelputri as she began spending more time with the tigers around the Himalayas - where she was born to Himawan and Ma Maina. Her sacrifices included fasting on just fruits, later on pure Ganga jal and then eventually on just thin air. Devotees who fast on this day in honour of Ma Shaelputri find enough success to fend of difficulties in life. Jai Ma Shaelputri. Best mantra: 1) Om Shaelputriyaye namah 2) Om sarve Mangal mangaliye shiwe sarwath sathi ke sharne treyam bakke Gauri narayani namostute 3) Om duum durgaye namah SECOND DAY OF NAV RATRI On day two, it’s the turn of Ma Brahcharini. Follow us daily on livestream Facebook media with Devi katha from 7-9pm AEST.
14.01.2022 SRI TULSI VRINDA KI VIVAH BHAGWAN SALIKRAM DEV KE SATH Sydney 26 November 2020 Thursday On Thursday, our Sri Hari Vishnu rises from a four month rest. And on this day he fulfils his promise to marry Devi Tulsi as a plant and he takes the form of a stone - referred as Salikram Dev.... In her previous life, Devi Tulsi was known as Vrinda and she was married to Janardhan, son of Sagar Deva - the sea God. But as she was chanting for his protection from the Devas he was fighting, Sri Hari Vishnu entered Vrinda Devi’s abode in the form of Janardhan. She stopped prayers for her husband assuming he had arrived home safely but when she realised it wasn’t him but it was Sri Hari Vishnu in his place, she cursed to turn into a form of a stone, later became Sri Salikram shila Dev. Instead Sri Hari accepted her curse and in return blessed her and promised to marry her in next life when she is born again as a plant - and so arrival of Devi Tulsi. Hindus all over worship Devi Tulsi daily but particularly in this Kartik month, when lighting a ghee made Diya under this plant derives blessings immensely. On Thursday, millions of Hindu will mark this day with ekadashi vrat and also visit mandirs to perform kanya daan vidhi. TULSI DEVI PLANT AS YOUR KANYA Devotees often raise a plant for a year and treat her as kanya only to give away to Sri Hari Vishnu on this day - and as such receive similar blessings as those of parents giving away their daughter. Even doing any sort of Tulsi Devi plant puuja is hugely devotional today. But do not uproot or pick leaves of a tulsi plant on ekadashi on Thursday, 26 Nov. OTHER THINGS YOU CAN ON TULSI VIVAH DAY 1) Fast on ekadashi foods - water only if possible, or fruits or rootcrops cooked in rock salt No grains. 2) chant - Om namo Bhagwate vasudevaye 108 or more if practical 3) listen or recite to Sri Hari Vishnu katha 4) donate Tulsi plant 5) offer tulsi leaves to Sri Hari Vishnu 6) havan vidhi and aarti CELEBRATIONS IN SYDNEY Our Sri Shani Sankat Mochan Mandir in Oxley Park will be open all day for darshan. From 730pm, we will broadcast live on Facebook: a) arrival of a baraat, wedding procession, b) parchan of dulah, Sri Hari Vishnu c) Vivah and seven fera d) Sri Hari Vishnu 108 names and tulsi leaf and manjiri offering e) aarti Stay tuned. 04.01.2022 LET’S LIGHT UP 366 BUT BE WARY OF LUNAR ECLIPSE TONIGHT It’s been an age old tradition for every individual to light a diya a day for our devas and deviyas and specially for Tulsi Devi. But what happens if you a miss a day or two or more in our ever so busy lifetimes that we all seem to be drawn into these day and age.... Can we light two diyas the next day or can we get someone else to do for us? The reply is NO - just as it’s not the same to have two meals one day and none the next day so too can’t we skip one day’s Diya with two the next day. What’s the remedy? Our scriptures assert that we should light 365 or for a year like 2020 being leap year 366 under or around a Tulsi plant today - being Kartik month Purnima. KARTIKA PURNIMA 30 November 2020 This day in itself is so blissful in that it’s called Dev Deepawali - the night when all our dev and deviyas celebrate their Deepawali after Sri Shiva Mahadev destroys a Tripurasur demon who had become a huge thorn for all devas until then. Tripurasur had a boon that he could only killed by a dhanush made out of bones of a saint and so Shivaji asked Dadhichi rishi for his body and he obliged. After Shivaji destroyed Tripurasur, he handed over the dhanush to Sri Hari Vishnu avtaar - Parshuram - who eventually gave it to King Janak of Janakpur, Nepal. 366 DIYAS TODAY It is highly desirable for everyone to light at least one Diya under your much loved Tulsi plant or failing that join a session where multiple or if possible 366 or more are lit. Let’s join our Devas and Deviyas in celebrating Dev Deepawali . But there’s one catch with today’s Purnima. We have a major Chandra grahan eclipsing the globe. The times are: 742pm to 1053pm AEST Sydney time. LIGHT UP @ 6pm Watch us at 6pm AEST online as we offer 576 or so - thanks to our many donors and sponsors tonight. It’s only an hour spectacle as we would like our devotees to concentrate on the eclipse rituals at their homes. More on our Chandra Grahan soon on Hinducosmos Mandir page soon.
