24.01.2022 Birgit Wasshausen Birgit Wasshausen started her apprenticeship almost 40 years ago in a jeweller’s workshop in Dresden (Germany), completing her degree as a Master Goldsmith in 1988. In 2006 Birgit and Jürgen immigrated to Australia and now call the Sunshine Coast home. Birgit creates individually designed and traditionally handcrafted jewellery of high quality in a contemporary style, mostly gold and sometimes with sterling silver, using natural gems. ... I like asymmetric designs full of verve, swinging lines, but still simple jewellery that will show the full beauty of a special stone or pearl. Sometimes less is more, says Birgit, who can design special pieces with your own gems or remake old jewellery. It’s a wonderful journey with the customer and I feel privileged to receive so much trust to create a piece, which will be worn with pleasure and joy. The glow in the customer’s eyes is a precious reward. You can see Birgit’s work at the Maleny Handmade Markets on April 17 and 18, from 8am to 3pm at the Maleny Community Centre, along with many other artists and crafters. (Check out the Maleny Handmade Market page on facebook for more details.)

24.01.2022 The Wood Wide Web By Stephanie Hicks We all appreciate a forest such as our wonderful Mary Cairncross Park. Standing under a rainforest giant and looking up many metres into its canopy is a magical experience but if we could see into the ground as easily as we can look up at the canopy we would see a system just as amazing and awe-inspiring, without which our marvellous forests would simply not exist at all....Continue reading

23.01.2022 POETS’ CORNER Berganns Walk We walked along a rustic path... Undulating and serene Heard the eastern whipbird call Omnipresent but unseen The well trodden path we followed Where children rode and walked before On their way to Witta school According to the local lore Then silence came, and I stood still Strange voices reached my ear That came drifting through the trees From long ago, but somehow near The sound of children’s laughter And a pony trotting by And I also heard a sadder sound Of a reluctant infant’s cry Then a vision came before me A procession from another time Children walking, skipping, riding A sight mystical and sublime But the calling of the whipbird Brought me back to the present day The voices and the visions faded And we went upon our way Denzil Nash Squabbling birds Lost in study of man’s knowledge, Books around me old through the age; Searching out the pearls of wisdom, From the writings of the sage. Suddenly, my thoughts went soaring, At the sound of arguing; Birds of feather, got together, In the tree outside my den. What chatter! What a clatter! When both birds of different set; Claimed the right of sole inheritance, On the bough on which they met. As I listened to their chatter, Watching, waiting, like a judge; Both the birds were claiming bough-rights, And both-the-birds refused to budge. Even though the tree had plenty, Other boughs on which to pad; Both the Raven and the Magpie Wanted what the other had. Leaving scene of disputation, Thus, returning to my den; Life’s best lessons come from nature, Other lessons from the pen. It’s a trait in all creation, Taught the birds of different clan; Selfishness is universal Found in nature as in man. Peter C. Horrell FIREFLIES The rain swept in across the river Great lashing curtains Isolating the cabin from the rest of the world The song of the water changed as its level rose And, as suddenly, the storm had gone. The still washed dusk gave way to night And in the dark, a myriad flickering lanterns lit the forest Or were they signals flashed amongst the trees Were distant stars playing hide and seek on earth? Fireworks were as nothing compared to this display And all in velvet darkness. Leaves dripping softly, The slowing murmur of the river. Joan Dillon

17.01.2022 Date with a Dodgy Diva Open the champagne will you darling. I’m barely in the door of a warm and inviting home, albeit adorned with the colourful and eclectic touches of a non-confirming diva, and the throaty command leaves me in no doubt that I am in the presence of theatre royalty. Testing my willpower, I have to remind myself that I’m here to do an interview, not party, as the witticisms begin to fly before I even sit down. by Judy Fredriksen A professional soprano, Judy...Continue reading

17.01.2022 The jewel in Maleny’s crown Jim and Sandra Goulton are celebrating 20 years since they opened the doors of Maleny Jewellers. In that time, they have had many highs and a few lows: three beautiful children, wonderful, loyal staff, trade fairs, an annual shop party, but also a recent ‘smash and grab’, the closing of their Beerwah shop and the difficulties of Covid. However, they have stayed firm, and their customers have stayed with them worthy of a proper celebration, once C...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Stand By Me Each month we are saying thank you to a business who has one of our stands outside their doors, or stocks our papers inside, so that we are able to bring the HT to even more readers across the hinterland. 12.01.2022 Speak up now A group comprising Quota, Lions, Rotary and Zonta Service clubs of the Blackall Range recently held a meeting in the Maleny RSL Hall, to gauge interest in the fight against domestic and family violence on a focussed and local level. Speakers from key help organisations, including the Queensland Police, addressed the audience on what was available in terms of ongoing investigation, prevention, and support.... A spokesperson said the group had already taken steps to implement strategies. Print media across the Range has already featured our new logo SPEAK UP NOW and we have fixed signs in men’s toilets that include support phone numbers. We are giving ongoing support for the Red Rose Foundation, placing red benches in public areas to raise awareness. The first will be the refurbished Quota bench outside the Maleny Post Office, in association with the Men’s Shed, she said. Pictured are SPEAK UP's Val France and speakers Kate Teasdale, Stacy Oehlman, Karen Marsh and Fiona Dempster.

12.01.2022 Food, glorious food! by Klinton Jones The roads were wet and the night was dark, but that wasn’t going to stop me getting to the ‘Meet the Makers’ event, a fantastic initiative organised by the Food and Agribusiness Network to showcase the wares of local Sunny Coast producers. ... As I arrived, I realised I wasn’t the only one willing to brave the weather - the place was packed! I walked through the beautifully decorated aircraft hangar and was bombarded with the most wonderful array of sights and smells. Brewers, bakers, makers and...camel farmers? I didn’t even know camel milk was a thing, but I tried a bit from QCamel and was not left wanting. It’s exceptionally tasty and apparently also quite good for your gut health. These local camel pioneers sell organic camel-related produce and offer tours of their farm in Glasshouse, which start at their head office on, wait for it, Sahara Road. Yes, seriously. I was then reminded of how many of nature’s plants we can actually eat while visiting the Greenshed’s stall and consuming a bunch of microgreens and edible flowers. Some of these little delights just look like simple leaves but the intensity of the flavour is absolutely astounding. I stopped by Silver Tongue Foods, a business that was born from the hard times of Covid, and that now absolutely thrives less than a year later. This niche micro bakery already has a shopfront and a large-scale wholesale operation supplying all across the coast. I can tell you that after tasting their incredible sourdough crackers the rapid success of the company makes complete sense. My body doesn’t tolerate lactose like it used to, but I just had to sample a delicious mango yoghurt from Maleny Cheese as well as, you guessed it, some mouthwatering cheese! A popular attraction in the Sunny Coast Hinterland for many years and for good reason, they know how to produce great dairy! I thoroughly enjoyed my time meeting the makers. I saw, I tasted, I learned. Thank you to everyone involved particularly the Food and Agribusiness Network for doing a truly wonderful job in organising it.

07.01.2022 We shall remember them - despite Covid As the sun rose on 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers rowed towards the shores of Gallipoli and into history itself. Every year since, as the sun rises, Australians gather across the nation to remember their legacy, and the legacy of all those who have followed in their footsteps. As shared on the RSL website, this tradition began over a century ago, when the ANZAC soldiers marched in London to Westminster Abbey for a s...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Let’s Talk Business Noosa Mats and Rugs Sometimes it’s good to take a drive and enjoy other areas in our beautiful Sunny Coast region. And a great reason to do this is with interior design in mind! Noosa Mats and Rugs stocks traditional styles, modern designs, natural fibre and kids rugs, for every taste from eclectic to contemporary to classic. So if you feel like sprucing up your home, take a trip to this gorgeous shop, run by Fay Borleis.... 1. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Melbourne, and have lived and bought my children up here for the last 25 years. 2.. How long have you been running Noosa Mast and Rugs? And what did you do before this? This business has been operating for 18 years in Noosaville. Five years ago I walked into Noosa Mats and Rugs to buy a new floor rug for my home and after chatting with the owner found they were wanting to retire so purchased the business. I have had a background in building and in home styling and so I really enjoy this work. 3. What do you like the most about your business? I love advising clients which rug or new piece of furniture to place in their homes, this is a service that we provide free of charge and we find that we have a very large percentage of our customers return time and time again, always commenting on what a great service and experience they have had. 4. What does a 'typical' day entail for you? We have grown the business and moved to new larger premises last April and are now finding with all the new people moving up to the coast that the demand for our floor rugs is growing. My days are busy, especially now we have introduced a new eclectic mix of home décor and furniture which is proving to be extremely popular! We supply many sizes starting from 80x150 floor mat size right up to 300x400 rug size, and we can also organise delivery, so that takes up a portion of my day as well. 5. If you had to share any advice connected to your business, what would it be? I always advise before coming to remember to bring a photo of your room or rooms when you come to the shop, and to measure the space that it’s to go in, so we know which size to recommend for you and can get a sense of the space. It really helps. Noosa Mats and Rugs is based at 2/168 Eumundi Noosa Rd, Noosaville QLD 4566. Phone: 07 5442 4899, or visit: noosarugs.com.au Noosa Rugs
