16.01.2022 There are many reasons why parents for years have encouraged kids to finish all the food on their plate. A few of these reasons include + Cultural norms and ex...pectations + Grew up or currently live in family where food is scarce and don’t want to waste food. + We worked hard to bring food to this table - you need to eat it. + View of finishing food as a sign of respect for the person who made the food. + It’s rude not to finish grandma’s dinner + Want to feel a sense of control over meal times. Most often it’s actually NOT about the food and more about many other factors. In the recent years, therapists (and other professionals) have been encouraging parents to steer clear of the you must clean your plate mentality. There are many reasons why the clean your plate mentality doesn’t actually serve our children. + Our kids have a natural radar of when they are full, and this pushes them to eat past satiation and not trust their internal radar. + Doesn’t instil a sense of trust in our children. They may begin to doubt their internal radar. + Leads children to see that finishing their food and overeating brings praise. + It engages us in a power struggle with our children. Children will have days they are so hungry they ask for seconds and other days when they have 3 bites and are full. Instead: + Please seek professional support if you are sincerely worried about your child’s eating. + If your child does clean their plate then great they must have been hungry. + Reflect on your family values and cultural norms around food. + Get curious about what your child might be communicating to you when they refuse to eat their food. full. + Offer a few different choices on their plate of things they can chose from. + Narrate out loud when they are done. I see you are pushing your food away, looks like you are done. + Allow for natural consequences (they may be hungry) instead of adding in punishment if your child does not finish their food. 03.01.2022 This Wednesday the 2nd of September is Early Childhood Educators Day 2020.

01.01.2022 You know what's better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why do I keep sharing this message? Because we keep selli...ng our kids short labeling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Here are some examples of messages I like for different ages: For 2-3yo kids I usually break it down by color. Although it's not 100% accurate, it’s a good framework to get started. Red: gives you a strong heart Orange: helps you see in the dark Yellow: helps your body heal cuts Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain White: gives you energy For 4s and 5s you can start being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you be able to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones be strong. For 4s/5s and 6s you can introduce the idea that some foods do a lot of things in their bodies and some foods do a few things. For 6s and 7s you can introduce the concept of vitamins and minerals - tell them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Learn about the body. For 8s and 9s - learn even more about different things in foods. And so on. All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. That's more powerful than anything you could ever tell them.
