22.01.2022 Naidoc week is coming to an end. IAAMA is based in Australia and we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. We are full of gratitude and admiration for the tens of thousands of years and continuing care given to this amazing land and the powerful medicinal plants that Australia and its indigenous people have produced and nurtured. Traditional medicines rely on the handing down of knowledge of indications and safe use of medicinal plants, minerals and physica...l therapies. We thank the Aboriginal custodians of this knowledge for keeping it safe and ensuring it can be used for generations to come. Aromatherapy is a traditional medicine and as practitioners we have a deep respect for the traditional medicines from this country on which we live and all countries across the globe. We acknowledge that Australia is stolen land and always was and always will be Aboriginal land. If you chose to share this Naidoc 2020 poster, please read the conditions of use at naidoc.org.au https://www.naidoc.org.au//f/files/naidoc-poster-2020.png

22.01.2022 Why consult with a professional aromatherapist? Because they can create a treatment plan just for YOU.

21.01.2022 Message from IAAMA council We are heartbroken by the devastating fires that have been burning around Australia for many months and continue to burn. We send our deepest condolences to the people who have lost loved ones and extend our sincerest gratitude to all emergency services who are working tirelessly to save lives and property and to all who are contributing to the recovery in ways large and small. We hope that the choking smoke being blown around the planet and the ima...ges and statistics representing the destruction of our precious wildlife inspires a global determination to change the trajectory of our environmental impact. Please assist the recovery effort if you are able and then please work towards preserving the beautiful planet we are so lucky to inhabit. Please be the hope that we all need.

19.01.2022 We care about all our members and followers, and know that many of you may be feeling alone. Please let us know how we can help and support you at this time. Stay safe, stay well IAAMA Council and Support Staff

12.01.2022 What is aromatherapy? Here is our definition Aromatherapy is the evidence based, therapeutic use of essential oils to treat, influence or modify the mind, body and spirit by aromatherapists (professionally qualified therapists) to promote health and wellbeing. ... Based on the needs of the individual a range of applications are employed by an aromatherapist including inhalation, diluted topical use and massage. Essential oils have been used medicinally for hundreds of years and are selected for an individual based on their traditional use, clinical experience and from the results of modern scientific evaluation.

09.01.2022 Support one another.

09.01.2022 As we start to get back to work and school, we need to take heed of the lessons we have learned in lockdown - one of them being to take care of ourselves. As care givers and therapists, self care is imperative for us so we can give care to others.

08.01.2022 Times are still difficult for many, remember to reach out to others with love and support. To all our Melbourne members and followers, stay strong, stay connected and stay safe.

07.01.2022 No aromatherapy formulations have been shown to treat or prevent COVID-19. Please follow the World Health Organisation guidelines including hand washing with soap for at least 20 seconds, general hygiene and physical distancing. Please contact your aromatherapist for advice on safely using essential oils for emotional support. As always, speak to your doctor or primary healthcare physician if you have any signs and symptoms of disease.

07.01.2022 IAAMA has restored the website and can now receive emails. If you sent us an email in the past few weeks please send it again now. Thank you for your understanding. Technology is amazing when it works and very frustrating when in goes wrong. The website is an old version and we are working on updating it.... Renewal certificates and invoices will be sent out shortly to all who have submitted appropriate CPE and have complied with their first aid and insurance obligations. If not we will be in touch soon to assist you in remaining compliant.

04.01.2022 Your Sunday reminder to show and share kindness with all, especially to yourself.

04.01.2022 As hand sanitisers become increasingly unavailable to purchase, or can be purchased at inflated prices, many people are turning to DIY, without proper formulating knowledge. Here’s some advice. Firstly, commercial hand sanitisers need to be registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and require both in vitro (in the lab) and in vivo (on test subjects) testing (https://www.tga.gov.au/otc-medicine-monograph-hand-sanitise). ... In other words, it needs to hold up to claims of effectively killing bacteria and viruses. Note also, that TGA recommendations for hand sanitiser use includes applying to visibly clean hands in other words, if your hands are dirty/soiled, it would not be effective at killing bacteria and viruses. Ultimately, correct washing with soap and water is the most effective way to remove bacteria and viruses from your hands, and the soap does not need to be labelled antibacterial. Now, for those who are determined to make their own hand sanitisers, please do so with informed knowledge. AND IF YOU INTEND TO SELL YOUR PRODUCT, YOU HAVE AN ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY TO DO YOUR UNBIASED RESEARCH TO CREATE A PRODUCT THAT IS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE. This cannot stress this enough your first priority is to do no harm, not I want to make a natural product with no chemicals. The latter is a bias and a fallacy that has the potential to cause harm. Essential oils and aromatherapy are not medically tested for treatment or prevention of Coronavirus COVID-19. It is not advisable to make curative or preventative statements of aromatherapy or essential oils or its applications to coronavirus or any virus not medically studied. This post from a biologist, covers sanitising and disinfecting https://www.facebook.com/1709248846028161/posts/2646709952282041/?d=n This link will take you directly to an EPA publication discussing the difference between sanitising and disinfecting, in particular around a vulnerable group (children in childcare settings) https://www.epa.gov//fil/documents/ece_curriculumfinal.pdf When your practices around formulating cover the most vulnerable amongst us, you are least likely to cause harm. That is best practice. More information and links will follow in an email update

03.01.2022 Resharing our advice on essential oils and masks as there are a lot of memes and poor advice floating around from untrained and ill-informed people. We are in unprecedented times. The advice we are providing in regards to this is based on what we do know about essential oils, fabrics, plastic, sensitisation, ect. In short, whilst it seems like a reasonable idea to add a drop or two of oils to your mask, it can in actuality render your mask ineffective.

03.01.2022 We have received information from the Federal Government that states that only AHPRA registered health care providers are permitted to provide services that break the social distancing rules. This means we are not permitted to provide services that require us to be closer than 1.5 meters away from our patient at any time and we must have 4 square meters per person available in any space. There are serious repercussions if anyone is found to have not complied with these directives including fines and possible jail time. There should be more information on each State's website but none have been updated since the Prime Minister's announcement 24/3/2020.

02.01.2022 Masks and aromatherapy There is still so much that is unknown regading covid 19. Things we do know includes: -mask wearing contributes to a reduction in virus spread and we know that wearing masks can be uncomfortable when they are worn for long periods of time... - most masks will lose effectiveness when damp. Please do not spray your mask with anything. If they are washable masks wash and completely dry before use as per directions - essential oils can damage fabrics which may lead to the failure of masks - over exposure to EO's can lead to sensitisation and skin damage. It would be very difficult to apply EO's to a mask at a low enough dose to mitigate this risk. Suggestions for keeping masks fresh Use mints or herbal lozenges or carry a few washable masks and change throughout the day. You will need to have an airtight container to store used masks until they can be washed. If your mask has an opening between layers you could use fresh or dried herbs like lavender, lemongrass or chamomile in a tissue or sachet for the aroma and emotional support. Keep your lip balms handy, as lips can get dry more quickly whilst wearing masks. Using your essential oils for emotional support for yourself, your family and your clients will be crucial during this time. To read more about essential oil support for COVID-19, check the articles written by the Tisserand Institute and Salvatore Battaglia.
